1st Gen Is it considered a cop out to use Pokémon Yellow to supplement Red & Blue acquisitions?

Initially there was a Red and Blue that you had to trade between to get 'em all. Each had exclusive ones and different appearance rates.

Then Yellow came out, a bit different of a layout, different spawn rates and availability.

Do you consider using Yellow as a shortcut to obtaining all 151? Do you think it compromises the challenge of just using Red & Blue?

I'm just wondering, as I'm currently playing through Red & Blue, and thought about bringing Yellow into the rotation (It's being let's played, which you can find in the Let's play forum on this board). Not sure how I feel about it, though. I could see where someone would say it is a cop out. :-/

    Thanks for your opinions!

    No, I don't.

Pokémon Yellow didn't make it that much easier to obtain all Pokémon: on one hand, you can get all three starters and one trade-exclusive evolution (Machamp if memory serves) ; on the other hand there are more unobtainable species (14) than in Red or Blue (11), and you'll have to trade with both of them to fill out the Pokédex in Yellow... which makes only four more Pokémon that you can get by playing alone in Yellow than in Red or Blue, it's not that huge of a shortcut. And I didn't find spawn rates in Yellow to be any more profitable than in Red & Blue (except maybe for wild Pidgeottos in Viridian Forest, but it will still take as much time to evolve them into Pidgeots as in Red & Blue) .

Besides, if you play Red and Blue with the objective to fill out the Pokédex, trade regularly between the two and finish them both, you're still guaranteed to have four Pokémon missing: one starter line and one Eeveelution, so you will have to play the game a third time. And if they are the only missing Pokémon in your collection, it really doesn't matter what version you play, so you might as well pick up Yellow.

    Thanks for that feedback!

I think I will throw in Yellow into the rotation as well. I figure that way it saves me an added run for multiple evolutions (such as Eevee)

Yellow is more convenient for obtaining all 151, but I wouldn't say it's a "cop out" or "cheating". The same goes for trading ahead to GSC (cloning Pokemon with multiple evos, Eggs, and an alternate way to catch version exclusives)

It was made for those one-off Pokemon that RB didn't have, testing the flashy palette on the Game Boy Color, and a game that was close to the anime. If you think using an official "spin-off" game is inappropriate, have fun completing Gen III's PokeDex without Colosseum or XD!

Point is, these games aren't cheating, they're just helpful. It's more satisfying to catch 'em all that way rather than using a Gameshark or using complex glitches (such as Cooltrainer Trick and Mew/Ditto Trick). And the only Pokemon that cannot be legitimately caught in RB or Yellow is Mew, which can be obtained in Stadium if I'm not mistaken. Note that Mew is not needed to complete the PokeDex.

I appreciate that feedback, Someday. They sure knew how attempt to get kids to buy each licensed game. I think that firmly gives me enough information to look differently at the situation!

PS: How hard is the Mew glitch?

The Mew glitch? The Mew Glitch is incredibly easy! You could just search up the Mew Glitch online but if you want stay tuned.

    Requirements
    - You have gone through the game to get Fly, Flying Pokemon, A Pokemon with a Special Stat.
    - Knowledge of Special Stats
    - You have NOT AT ALL beaten the youngster/camper on the far left in the grassy area in Cerulean City
    Steps:
    1. Go to Cerulean City
    2. Go up past the nugget bridge and onto the left.
    3. Know that camper up there? When you get into the maximum view radius of the trainer from the top, Simultaneously press the Start Key and Fly to Cinnabar Island.
    4. Go down to the area where you find dittos
    5. When ditto is about to use transform, go to your pokemon with the special stat you want! (Example: 192 | Give you: 44Hy that evolves into Q a glitch pokemon
    6. Kill the ditto when its transformed
    7. Get back to Cerulean City, Go up to the Nugget Bridge and your Start Menu should pop up! Press B and capture your new pokemon!

There's another version of the glitch that can be performed earlier in the game (as soon as you reach Cerulean City for the first time) to get Mew specifically, that I've tried and it worked for me:

    • When you first arrive in Cerulean City, go north. Fight your rival, and then all the trainers on the nugget bridge. DO NOT enter the Gym yet.
    • If you're playing Red or Blue, go left after the nugget bridge and into the grass with the lone camper that EthanAG mentioned. DO NOT fight him. You'll need to catch an Abra.
    • If you're playing Yellow, you'll need to get the ticket from Bill to gain access to Route 5 where Abra was relocated in this version. Again, do not fight the aforementioned camper. Catch an Abra on Route 5.
    • Heal your team in Cerulean City and stock up on Pokéballs.
    • Go towards the lone camper in the grass and stop one tile north of where he can see you (he can see you the moment he pops up on the screen) . Save the game.
    • Push down and immediately after it push start, select Abra and use Teleport to get back to Cerulean City. You'll know you did this step right with two things: the exclamation mark will appear above the camper before you teleport, and the Start Menu will stop working.
    • Enter the Gym and fight the Swimmer. His last Pokémon, Shellder, has the right Special stat.
    • Go back to the Nugget Bridge. The Start Menu will pop up on its own. Close it and a wild Mew will appear.
    • After the fight, the Start Menu will be back to normal.

For players having both Red and Blue having Yellow isn't really all that helpful for completing the PokéDex on either of the previous two games-although you'll need both of the primary paired games to complete the 'Dex on Yellow. The only real differences in the Pokémon offerings vs. Red/Blue would be Farfetch'd and Lickitung being available to capture in the wild (though these two are available through in-game trades in R/B, one could trade these two caught in Yellow back to R/B without the silly nicknames given to Pokémon offered through in-game trades.)
