Is Pikachu Becoming Unimportant?

Even if he is the mascot I wonder if they did ever go with a new trainer if they would give them a Pikachu or not.
 
If Ash and Pikachu go to Alola, it looks like Pikachu could be Ash's powerhouse yet again.

With these new powerful attacks coming in Sun and Moon, Pikachu learns an electric breath attack of some sort.

Pikachu will always be relevant, because its the mascot of the entire series. It's just that Ash's is getting rendered obsolete in terms of power that much faster by other Pokemon he catches throughout the series...by the end of the series its usually one of his weaker or less-used Pokemon in a competitive setting. Which makes a certain sort of sense, since it has enough battling experience to be Level 100 at least five times over by this point, it doesn't need the practice. His other Pokemon do.

I'd be willing to bet that he drops everything except for Pikachu by the end of Kalos, too. So in a way Pikachu is the only one of his Pokemon that IS relevant.
 
Personally, I don't really like Ash as a character, but what I don't like even more is this whole Ash-Greninja thing. Pikachu was Ash's starter, but now he's being ignored in favour of a new Pokémon. It's not just in the the anime though! The top 100 Pokémon survey in Japan showed that Greninja was the most popular Pokémon. All because of the anime focusing on Greninja and ignoring Ash's supposed 'best friend'. And don't say that's not why, because Pikachu is the mascot, and that is because it was Ash's first Pokémon. Not that the anime came first...

Please anime writers. End this madness and start an anime where the main characters are the ones from the games.
