I see what you are saying, and you are right. However it seemed like people were returning to threads less and less to re-engage in discussions and just forgetting about the threads after posting once. Not everyone was doing this of course but the majority of the regulars were. Us moderators are partially to blame by not always leading by example but we are working on that as well. Another issue as I said earlier was too much emphasis was being placed on the DCC. It felt like that was the only place to go and have a proper discussion while neglecting the endless possibilities that were the other threads. Unstickying the DCC and taking it off of it's pedestal was another step we took in order to change that.
So in short, nothing was wrong with the forum but we're looking for ways to make it better and get back on track as to what the purpose of the Treehouse was if that makes sense.
I noticed that, re: the DCC, and I am the first one in the conga line for cheering away that staple. If you want to encourage active conversations in threads, eliminating the only well known "you can always post here!!!!" threads in the forum is a great way to do that. Eventually, I would think it would help out the forum if your goal is to simply encourage more conversation and less post-and-going to simply eliminate the DCC all together, which is something I'm sure you guys have/are considering.
Chit-chat style threads being the majority of the threads in that forum are something I've always felt should be the case. It's just how it's being done that's a concern to me, because that forum has been my main forum here since 2007. I have been active in that forum through each of these major transitions, albeit more-so during others. This just happened so suddenly and promoted a tremendous lack of quality in the forum, when we were already on an organic route to this being the primary purpose of the forum.
If you're looking for a lengthy, faux-deep discussion on topics that have a significance in the world, go the Round Table. You'll certainly no shortage of people who get off on posting long-winded bogus opinions on howAmericathe world should work.
The Treehouse I think is more about the discussion of everyday things that are ultimately more mundane, so there's no need to constantly Google something to try and prove your point to someone who will most likely not give a shit about your opinion anyway; which automatically makes the Treehouse less hostile and prevents sharp increases in blood pressure as far as I'm concerned. There's more room for humor and general tomfoolery.
Right. This we knew, no one is arguing this.
