It's that they don't FEEL like Pokemon. Nostalgia is an incredible thing my friends. Something we find absolutely amazing we can find boring and dull years later. After 3 attempts I've finally gotten into 5th gen...yes...I bought White Version 3 times.. :(
But that's not the point. My point is this. Once you look past the poor character designs of some of the 5th gen, you know what I'm talking about; Trubbish, Vanillux, etc., you still have a very similar game to what we've been playing for over a decade! Not that it's a bad thing, because it's quite the opposite.
I think over all these years Pokemon's formula has been tweaked to near perfection, almost to where I personally believe it is the ultimate RPG. Tell me what game have you been playing for several years now? Yet haven't gotten bored of the repetitiveness? Pokemon will likely be your only answer. (Edited to make more sense I hope)
