James Cameron's "Avatar"

Haha.

Been telling my folks the concept of this Avatar six-legged horse thing
just pisses me off.

What happens?
I come home from a coffee walk and job hunt a shopping run, and there's an Avatar action figure on the kitchen table. The six-legged horse. No receipt.

I guess it's just not your movie. I like plenty of shows and movies that are fun, adventurous, funny, or has an enjoyable story. I don't exactly go for R-Rated movies though, and probably never will.
I like plenty of movies too. I just...don't get it. The appeal. What's everyone freaking out about?

Maybe his movies just don't sit well with me, because I wasn't all that impressed by Titanic either.

I saw it on Friday with a friend.

It was a good movie, I guess. I honestly don't see many movies outside the realm of animation so I don't have much to compare it to. It was absolutely gorgeous and I'd say it was definitely worth the price of my ticket just for the visuals but... otherwise? I thought it was pretty meh.

The plot was, to be blunt, very cliché. I mean, if you're going to watch the typical "guy goes to war, guy befriends enemies, guy realizes he's wrong, guy ends up fighting for enemies" plot, you might as well watch Avatar because it's the prettiest one but seriously? They got away with that plot while planning the movie? :/ I predicted almost EVERY "twist" the movie threw at us. Like Triffy said, I just couldn't really bring myself to care about the characters. I was never on the edge of my seat or anything because if the entire movie up until a certain point was predictable, I could pretty much assume that whatever I guessed about the ending would be right. (And it was.) The plot was just not entertaining and the characters were pretty boring, imo.

And they could've toned down the white guilt in the movie too. :/ It's like the entire thing was a horribly-veiled metaphor for how the Western world has always invaded places and taken what isn't theirs. Yeah, we get it. That point was made like 50 years ago. At least be more discreet with it if you're trying to give your movies deep meanings.

Also the movie was too long. Ugggh. My butt hurt by the end of the movie just from sitting there for so long. I mean, I can't really think of anything they could really cut out of the movie (although I can think of like 5 different endings they could've thrown at us a lot sooner) but almost 3 hours? Not including previews which bring it to 3 hours? Ugh. Never again, seriously. I don't care how good your movie is. If it goes past 2 hours (and especially 2.5h) then I'm going to get bored and I'm going to be uncomfortable.

I think I'm rambling. Long story short, if I hadn't heard from the internet that it was an overdone plot, I probably would've been ridiculously disappointed. As it stands, despite all my ranting, I thought it was a good movie. I probably wouldn't watch it again because it was fantastic in 3D and I don't think even blu-ray will do it justice but... it was still a pretty good movie. Just a tad (read: very) overhyped.

Oh, also, I spent the entire movie thinking "this would've made a better video game". :( I hope the gaming industry gets budgets like that one day.

Hmmmm.....according to Wikipedia, Avatar is about 162 minutes long (2 hours and 42 minutes). I don't think that's what the real trouble is with the film.
Take a look at a few other films that were huge successes, yet are very long. Like The Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, it was 2 hours and 48 minutes.
Or Cameron's Titanic, which is over 3 hours long (194 mintues to be exact).
And don't forget The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, it was about 3 hours and 20 minutes long (200 minutes)! Despite their length, they were all very successful.
It's confusing how so many people claim Avatar to be tedious or very predictable. If that's true, how is the film so triumphant?
.....I don't know what the real trouble with it is. Maybe it's the plot, or-how you guys said it-the characters were pretty boring, although I wouldn't think so for Neytiri; she is very dramatic.
Whatever the problem is, it may just be matter of opinion.

I like plenty of movies too. I just...don't get it. The appeal. What's everyone freaking out about?
I wasn't necessarily saying that you don't like many movies, I was just guessing that this particular one isn't for you.
And there's plenty of action in the film that can really get a view excited. The Mountain Banshees (the flying, reptilian creatures) is a perfect example.

I felt the same way about the third LotR movie. I've never watched the whole of Titanic in a single sitting. I'm pretty sure I found PotC3 to be uncomfortably long too. It's one thing for a DVD release to be long because then you can pause it partway through and take a break--stand up and walk around to get your circulation going again--but in a theatre, if you want to see the whole thing, you're confined to your seat the whole time.

:( They need to start up intermissions for long movies or something.

Popular =/= quality, for the love of god. Cameron is treating his audience like babies, enticing us with ~~pretty shiny 3D CGI~~, what, so we don't notice that his script was weak? That it was vaguely similar to something that George Lucas would write? The film depended on animation, with that it's only impressive, otherwise it is emotionally inaccessible.

Also, LOL TRUTH: https://twitpic.com/xfgkm

Lucas quality in the new trilogy maybe. But A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are fine, script-wise. Although, I'm awfully sure there was a ghostwriter on those.

Regardless... lol at the link.

I also found the movie to be a little bit like FernGully: The Last Rainforest if anyone's seen that.

Long movies I don't mind, provided they're well made. In terms of everything. Well-written, well-acted, well-shot, etc... Pirates 2 and 3? I can't stand. Dark Knight I can watch every day.

........If the script is boring, and the scenes are predict-hold on! Could some of you give me some example scenes that are easily seen coming? Because I don't know any factors that could cause you to predict certain events.
And that link earlier.....I think it's just hilarious, not as something critical.

Instead, why don't you stop trying to prove people with opposing opinions wrong, accept their judgment, and think for yourself.

I know, I know.
It's just incredible how so many people (or just you guys) see Avatar so differently, even though it is one of the biggest films in history. I think it's marvelous, while others think it's flat. But concluding this, it's just a matter of opinion.
Lets move on shall we?

Are any of you guys going to get it when it's released for home media? I definitely will.

Just went to see this with my parents (It's the first time we've actually been to the cinema together in 6 years.)
It was a brilliant movie. I enjoyed the storyline, no matter how overdone it is.
Then again, I'm a sucker for cheesy plots.
I'm glad the 3-D was done right, though.
How it wasn't totally in your face, popping out of the screen 3-D.
Probably one of the best movies I've seen in a while.
I'll definitely be picking this up on Blu-ray.

I didn't even know if it was going to be released on Blu-Ray. Either way, I would get one.....that is...if I had a Blu-Ray player!

It was epic.A MUST see in the theater. You can't really reproduce the intensity with a home entertainment system. The story was simple, and it worked will."If it ain't broke, don't fix it".But a plot twist would have been nice.It reminded me heavily of Pocahontas and Disney's Atlantis. One of my new favorite movies for sure...

Reminded me of Atlantis too. Nice to see someone remembers that movie.

So, it's Pocahontas, Atlantis, and FernGully: The Last Rainforest rolled all into one. I'd say The Smurfs too since everyone is blue.

Why wouldn't it be released on Blu-ray? O_o

Well, this whole Blu-Ray disc system is still kind of new to me. I keep thinking that it's something that only certain movies will be formatted to.

Which actor or actress is your favorite within the film?
For me, they are all great in their own way.

Sam Worthington fits both a crippled marine and a Na'vi warrior so well.
Zoe Saldana is, like I said before, very dramatic at her part.
Stephen Lang, at first I never put much thought of him being the villain, but during the final showdown...well...you'll get the picture.
I also like Joel David Moore. I like the personality in his part.

Did Avatar deserve the Golden Globe for Best Pic?
I don't think so, but I don't care, because I feel the same way about the Golden Globes as I do about PC's Member of the Month thread: it's a popularity contest that I can't take seriously. (I would have watched for Ricky Gervais, though, if I weren't boycotting NBC.) The fact that Avatar won just makes me wonder what exactly "Best Picture" means to the people who choose the nominees. Avatar was underdeveloped and unoriginal, plain and simple, these people must have been hypnotized by those damn special effects.
