July '09 Pixel Art Monthly Contest
This month will be a lot different to the previous ones. This month you will be following the theme of summer. So your work must be related to summer things. But, instead of the work being a sprite, you must make a pixel art of a summery scene; something like the sun reflecting on the water or a crowded beach would suffice. Also, to make things interesting you cannot use more than one shade of a colour. Say, if you use red then you cannot use light red and so forth. However this doesn't mean don't use shading, be creative, try some hue switches, remember, purple isn't far off of blue or red, orange isn't far off of red etc.
    Rules:

    • Your work must be at least 150x150 Pixels.
    • It must not exceed 600x600 Pixels.
    • Your entry must follow everything that is described in the opening statement.
    • Obviously, you are to follow the PC and Pixel Art forum rules.
    • Your entry must be entirely your own work, and must be scratched.
    • You may only submit one piece of work; if you submit multiple pieces your most recent piece will be judged.
    • Your entry must be made between 05/07/09 and 31/07/09
    • If you get disqualified for breaking the size or colour limits, you may enter again.
    • If you get disqualified for art theft you may not enter again, and you will be reported.

Could you better define what counts as a colour? Is maroon counted as red? What about pink? Is gray considered a shade of black or white? Is indigo considered a separate color from blue or violet? Would brown be a dark shade of orange? This leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

Me and Amachi were worried about this, we've decided colours like Turquoise, Magenta, Grey etc count as single colours.

Maroon, Burgundy etc are shades though.

Just to make sure I'm clear, would these count as different colors?
They are both a "green", or a "blue", so on, but are slightly mixed with a neighboring color.
(i.e. The green on the left is green with a little yellow, and the green on the right is green with a little blue.)

I think they are just on the limit for counting as different, anything lighter is pretty much a shade.

Well, unfinished, but I deserve to post it so far after all the long hours. ><

That lime-green looking color is actually just a darker neon yellow. o_o;; The goldish color is orange. The darker color there used for most of the water is blue. White is used for the bandaid on her leg.The light grey is on the rocks. Most of the colors were dithered to make other colors.

Personally, I think it's nice to see challenges in these contests, and I especially appreciate the 'don't make a sprite, make a pixel art' aspect here, but I think the color thing invites too much confusion. I don't have any ideas, but I think it'd be better if you came up with a different limitation that's more clearly defined and doesn't create a huge gray area.

    That's just my two cents.

Why not give a list of all the colors that can be used? Green, yellow, black, grey, pink, purple, red, black, white, brown, blue, turquoise, etc.

No, it's supposed to be sort of the opposite of that. You aren't supposed to use more than one shade of any hue, and to shade, you must use other hues.

Personally I think it's too confusing to people, not to mention how hard it'd be to judge fairly and accurately, but then I said that already in my other post. :/

Yes, it is quite the opposite of Monochromatic. It's saying use more colors instead of shades.

I agree with Kinarii, limitations are fun and I hate to berate you when you are hosting the contest for us, but this one is too vaguely designed.
I also agree with Vannah☆ of listing the colors, or even give us a pallet to work with.

Just a question, but it would be accurate to say neither white or black is allowed to be used in your entry since it is a shade of all colors?

    EDIT:

    Here is my entry

I used only 9 colors, a light red, dark desaturated purple, a dim sky blue, dark grayish turquoise green, light apple green, desaturated cerulean, very light magenta, a yellow, and peach orange. ^^ I hope it is acceptable, heck the dithering took long.

Oh, just popped in to mention, your entry is 1 pixel over the limit. You might wan't to fix that ^^'

btw, nice entry ^^ It looks clean and smooth unlike my disasterous dither mosaic. Good luck to all^^
