AMAZING! I can't believe I actually left this series. Pokemon look so detailed compared to what I knew in Gen. II. I plan on getting at least to the 3rd badge, then trying Pokemon White to see how that goes, unless Soul Silver captivates me enough to complete the entire game first. Who knows.

But now to the important part: I don't understand the whole Nature and Ability thing, if someone could explain how those work. I don't want to delve into EV/IV things yet, but Natures and Abilities seems a place to start, and I won't be battling competitively until I play White anyways. But that's it, please offer help and ideas if you can!

    Thanks guys!

Welcome back into the world of crazy critters! I myself lost interest in Pokemon after Gen 2 and coming back into it playing Soulsilver was mind-blowing.

Pokemon natures affect how your pokemon grows in its stats, usually by boosting one stat and hindering another. I use this chart: https://www.psypokes.com/lab/natures.php

Abilities is a little more difficult to explain but it basically adds additional effects in battle. For example, Levitate means ground-type moves will miss on a Pokemon that can Levitate, even if it isn't a Flying type. I'd recommend Bulbapedia for that.

Pokemon HG/SS is a huge upstep from the previous Pokémon games, which was intentional, I love them, plus all the other Pokémon games ofc.

Basically answered so closed. I'll just note that Pokemon can have all sorts of natures (it's randomised) while with abilities a Pokemon species may only be able to have one or one out of a couple, and they may change upon evolution in cases.
