Just what happened between Brock and Prof Ivy?

Well, I guess it didn't work out since he ended up with Misty
 
When exactly did GymShipping become canon in the anime? And I always thought that Professor Ivy simply turned down Brock's advances, and that Brock left when he got his heart broken as a result. I dunno, that seems like the most realistic explanation.
