My son got a deck of cards from somewhere, a random birthday present from a friend or something. He of course has lost the sheet with the real rules. Now he has a mish-mash of cards and makes up the rules as he goes when he plays with his sisters to beat them.
Anyhow, I want to get them each a deck and rules and teach them how to play for real. I am leaning towards these 60 card starter packs with the two player mat. I see that there are different themes like Ancient Origins, Break Through, XY, Roaring Skies. Can all of these be used to play the same game or do you have to have matching themes? Do the booster packs have to match the theme of the deck? I have to get 4 kids set up and I would prefer to get them each a different box of cards.

For just play at home, any deck you can get will work. However, League Play has a list certain expansion sets that are legal. Feel free to get them any deck you want. I started playing Pokemon TCG when I was younger...I sucked bad at it. To this day...I still do. But I admire he wants to start playing so young. Get the theme decks to start the kids off, then get booster packs once they get a feel for the rules.

Actually, there's something significantly better for teaching people how to play, even though they only come with 30 card half decks: the Trainer Kits. They hold your hand through the first five turns of play on both sides of the match. IIRC, the latest one features Latias and Latios, but I could be wrong.

I strongly recommend the Trainer Kits and discourage the theme decks until you've learned to play, because the theme decks don't treat you like a beginning player.
