WB Drops Kids at Behest of Affils

    John Consoli

    MAY 31, 2005 -

The WB will drop its weekday 3-5 p.m. kids programming block beginning in January 2006, and at the same time will add one hour to its Saturday morning kids block, beginning its kids programming at 7 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. and running until noon.

The move is being made at the request of the network's more than 200 affiliated stations, which have seen the ratings of the weekday afternoon kids block decline steadily of the past several years.

In its place, the network will provide for its affiliates a two-hour "branded general-entertainment programming block," that will initially consist of off-network, syndicated programming, but which the network hopes will eventually consist of specially developed first run shows.

"This move will significantly increase ratings and revenue for both our station partners and the network," said Garth Ancier, WB chairman. "It will provide strong lead-ins for our stations' early fringe and access blocks, which should in turn have a positive effect on primetime ratings."

In making its announcement, the WB said the dynamics of the kids marketplace have become much more competitive since the network got involved in daily kids programming a decade ago.

"Cable networks such as Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Disney Channel have changed the dynamics in the kids' business by programming virtually 24 hours a day, seven days a week, fulfilling to a great extent, the demand for kids' programming in the afternoons for viewers and advertisers."

Kids' WB weekday numbers were significantly lower than the Saturday ratings, thus drawing less advertising interest.

So no way to catch up on your reruns of Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh or any other Kids WB programming now. Wonderful. It's bad enough with networks with their prime time obsessions for reality TV instead of much needed reruns, now this. Of course it was bound to happen eventually.

Besides beyond Pokemon and no Yu-Gi-Oh reruns since May? Hard to care period. Sighs, headdesk.

So that means there never gonna show any repeats with Misty I better catch up with cartoon network

Meh, kidswb was bound to eff up sometime. I heard about this over 6 months ago so I prepared myself with downloads and boxsets so honestly, kidswb pwned themselves. And besides, that channel was annoying with their stupid "aftertoon" show. Even a childhood me would think they were catering towards two yearolds.

I heard about this too a while back. Hopefully down the road they'll show some good new shows. As of right now, Pokemon and to a lesser extent, Yu-gi-oh, are the only shows I'd watch on KidsWB anymore. Now that KidsWB is the last to loose its afternoon block, its entirly up to Saturday mornings. Its not like it used to be when Fox, KidsWB, Fox Family Channel (now ABC Family), and UPN (it was channel 10 where I live, they had shows on once, didn't last long) had afternoon blocks. Now its just Miguzi on Cartoon Network.

I think this is a bad idea, I mean wouldn't they make more money to play everyday?

It's the end of an era as we know it.

Weekday children's programming has been destroyed by the cable boom of the 1990's (network television in general too). Were it not for these greedy media conglomerates, syndicated afternoon programming would be getting high ratings from all ages.

In case you haven't noticed, WB hasn't shown the kanto arc episodes in years, and you're incredibly lucky to stumble upon a pre-AG episode every once and a while. CN shows pokemon once a week so that's nothing to turn to, and they're approaching the beginning of AG in their weekly showing anyway.

Thank god, I love watching syndicated re-runs on the WB after school :)

    Hmm...that's surprising to me. Mostly because it's rare to find me watching WB (it's not a Canadian channel and I no longer watch the shows it offers), but still...taking out their afternoon block? ;_; The poor children. Even though I may not watch WB, if I'm not on the computer after school I'm in front of the TV watching afterschool cartoons. And as I see it, WB's a big provider of that, are they not? More cartoons on Saturdays is no consolation--I'd never get up at 7 for cartoons, are you kidding me? <_<;

    It makes good business sense if the ratings aren't very high, but still...cartoons. ;o;

Yep, what they are putting on at 4:00 P.M On the WB in January is a little goofy........

8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter."Yep, they got the rights."

I wish they'd just keep on showing cartoons on weekdays instead of showing infomercials and other stuff.

Heck, I don't even watch Nick or any other cable channels in the afternoons.

Both channels lost the rights to pre Johto stuff a long time ago.

This is sorta old news though. People saw this coming a long time before it happened, ratings have been dropping little by little every year for the past five or so years. 2005 is when they took a huge hit apparently, not even half of what they were at in 2001.

tv going to suck in the afternoon snice i can't watch pokemon the WB will be air shows like ER and 8 simple rules everyday from 3-5pm why can't cartoon network air kids wb shows in the afternoon monday-firday

Believe me, somehow I think that it's going to be healthier for the children in the long run to not be exposed to Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Stand and Xiaolin Showdown six days a week >P

Well, Coconut Fred's never been on weekdays, and XS isn't on the weekday lineup now.

What I'm saying is that I'd rather have a varity of stuff to watch on weekdays instead of the usual Nick/Cartoon Network/etc combo

Not to metion this very same thing happened to Fox Kids years ago too.

Heck, I liked watching Toonami on weekdays too.

Also, they haven't started showing the more current episodes of Pokemon on Cartoon Network yet. I'd like them to show the whole series of Pokemon, and not just the Advanced episodes.

Yes, but Kids WB has a tendency to insert and remove shows in their weekday lineup with little or no warning...I was speaking of future scenarios.

KidsWB blows, I mean not only they're shows are becoming crap (especially that god awful Lunatics) but they're also skipping episodes on the Viewtiful Joe anime which makes it not worth watching anymore.

My feeling about Kids WB, from my site

A toast, to Kids WB's Weekday Cartoon Lineup 1994-2006.

I personally am not a big fan of commentary, but in this case I feel that some is needed, though it is a bit too late. I?d like to make a toast to Kids WB?s weekday lineup for the years of joy it has provided to cartoon viewers. Personally, before Kids WB came to my area in late 1999 I stopped watching cartoons and WB's collection of high quality animation brought me back. When I heard about the announcement that they were cutting the lineup I personally didn?t think much of it at first, but now that it?s here it bring me great sadness. I have to ask myself why they are cutting something that was the cornerstone of there company in it?s times of youngness that has always held constant for them. It is something that has spawned such great series as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Well it?s to late now, I happen to be one of those rare people that do not have cable and dish, and even though I am getting older I will still miss there weekday lineup. Heres one for you, Weekday Kids WB.

I hope everyone will tune in tommorw and give them a good send off, I know I'll be there

Heh. The only good thing they ever showed was Pokemon, and now they loaded it with more crap like Coconut Fred and Loonatics. I really don't care if they drop it or not, the better episodes of Pokemon are on Cartoon Network anyway, the Kanto and Johto ones.

It explains why they been showing stupid stuff hour for the last couple of weeks. Coconut Fred and Loontics. The Looney Toons would be crying if they saw what they have become today. They are advertising their weekday viewers to watch on Satuarday. I love Afternoon Cartoons. The CN doesn't really intrest me in the afternoon except Yu-gi-oh GX or Code but I like the wholesome stuff the KidsWB show. Pokemon everyday and stuff. I setting my DVR to record tomorrows last weekday Pokemon show. They don't show pokemon anymore everyday on CN. Then the endless reruns of the Master Quest on weekends will end soon.

It a grand shame. They getting rid of the Afternoon cartoons because of money. Like showing meaningless reality TV and sitcoms will help. Who watches the WB anyways before 6:00 pm (cen time anyways) that aren't kids? A grand shame. Greed is overpowering our kids future. A grand shame.
