Cause they're comfy and easy to wear!

Seriously, what's with the shorts thing? It's getting ridiculous.

That guy is saying something that's so true. Imagine if he lost his shorts, rather than the battle... well, you know as much as me how much he'd be embarrassed.

I think they just wanted to stress this gag over the games, like how many fishermen have ultimate teams of Magikarp.

Hahah, yeah it's totally a running gag. Maybe a play on how ridiculous it was in that route east of Pewter City in the oldest games where some boy just came up to you and said "I like shorts! They are comfy and easy to wear!" At least I think it was on that route. Don't know the story behind it, but perhaps it was a strange translation, perhaps the kid was really just meant to be erratic and hyped up and not really ask you for a battle as much as run into you and start battling xD

And the ultimate Magikarp teams yeah... There's one in every game, isn't there?

Funny thing is that the shortspeople show up in the manga as well, but I'm not sure we've met someone going on about shorts in the anime. Have we?

After they remade them into FRLG and passed the thing on, I think there was some guy who said "Shouldn't you be wearing shorts?" in a game somewhere. The gag just developed, perhaps because the team thought it was too funny to remove.

At least Ash Ketchum wears full pants...

I get that it's a joke, but think of it this way:
Imagine that you are an actual person who lives in the Pokemon universe, and out of the blue, a kid runs toward you screaming "I like shorts because they are comfy and easy to wear!"

Then he starts attacking you with his Pokemon.

Get why this doesn't make sense? At least from an in-universe perspective?

I found that in X and Y, they had a lot of funny dialog compared to most games. I was so proud of the puns and jokes. xD

They were more memes than puns and stuff. I mean, Over 9000 showed its face in our Pokemon games. Didn't think that would happen.

I'm glad this running gag continued in the newer games. It's one of those things Pokemon's well known for, in my opinion. A highlight of the series.

Sometimes it's nice to take comfort in something so simple as still having your shorts. Couple years back while I was living in Beijing, mine ripped down the centre something significant. Being rather larger than a typical Chinese person, I had to hit a dozen stores just to find one new pair.

    Appreciate your shorts.

Any guesses why I put on shorts when I got home from work? Because they're comfy and easy to wear, obviously!

I've always got a kick out of the kids who show up in the games talking about their shorts, though I guess that does give them some memorable dialogue, unlike a majority of NPCs. And I had no idea until now, but the Youngster trainer class in Japanese is actually Shorts Youngster, which is where I assume they got the pun from in the first place.

It reminds me of Joey and his beloved Rattata haha, just an ongoing in-game thing that amuses the fans haha :) I guess when he runs up to you saying "I love shorts!" it's just like a kid being excited about something and wanting to share it and then you battle immediately afterwards because... well you've just made eye-contact and that's the law for trainers haha :)

Anybody notice this in Gen 5?
Looks like the youngsters could have a love interest...

Probably a tribute to the gag way back in the first generation that continued to be included in games over the years as a humorous, nostalgic dialogue. I appreciate Game Freaks' attention to detail, honestly. Really shows how much they care about their customers enjoying the games they develop.
