Well you should :D
I mean when you look at it, if you go into Japan speaking Babelfish-Translated Japanese like you're an expert, you'll be laughed at.
Same if you come onto the internet speaking leet from a translation program.
^_^

Edit: Wait..you said in your opening post that you learned leet. But you just said you used a program to translate :P

You are NOT allowed to have leet topics, it ends up to be SPAM because not everyone can read it.

^ Translation for both:

Heh, l33t speak (or - 1337) was originally developed for FPS gamers who at the time didn't have a way to chat without everyone seeing what they said. So, they developed l33t as a way of tricking the enemy in whatever FPS they were playing.

...At least thats what I hear. :P

Why must we be punished for the ignorance of others. Okay, maybe it's not really ignorance...

Can't those of us who understand l33t just enjoy ourselves with our own l33t speaking thread? :cross-eye

Nope, leet speak harks back to the very early BBS boards, where it could take up to 15 minutes to display one line of text. Any way to shorten the characters required, or replace them with numbers (Numbers require less bits to be sent than Letters) quickly became the trend. It was not 'developed' as some kind of code :P

I don't bite into this whole 'Advanced Leet' BS. Leet is numbers and letters. Lines, Slashes and such have no place in the Leet alphabet.

To me it's still classified along with l33t.

I hate it when people diss l33t. but on rare accasions, I agree with there frustration.

"The Dawn of the Internet

As the Internet was coming into its own, during the early 1980s, hackers that didn't want their websites, newsgroups, etc, to be picked up in a simple keyword search began using numbers to replace certain letters (mostly vowels) such as A = 4 or E = 3.

At this point, l33t speak was only known to a select few and only used when necessary. However, in 1994, id Software began to add Internet connectivity to Doom and Doom II, leading to a revolution in PC gaming and also to the rise of l33t speak.

As with any type of competition, 'smack' talk became prevalent in online gaming. Phrases such as 'I am elite' became common place, and somewhere down the line l33t speak crept in, reforming the phrase into '1 4m 3l1t3' in order to demonstrate that the speaker was a hacker and someone to be feared. It was further exaggerated by purposeful bad spelling and eventually wound up as something like this, '1 4m 3l33t!' and simplified to, '1 4m 133t'. Hence the name 'l33t speak'.

But eventually, l33t speak began to fall out of use because of the amount of time it takes to type, as well as the overuse of it by some, changing it from amusing to annoying."

Well, you said something about BBS, which I had never heard of b4, & if I did, then I didn't remember hearingabout it.

I guess my reason for posting that info was to establish the fact that FPS's did play a role in the l33t community.

It was more of a conformation to myself. :P

Advanced leet is a bit more complicated to read... :/

BBS was the way we communicated before the WWW came about. You'd dial in directly to your local BBS server. It was a bulletin board, alot this like this in someways. But in the days of 300 baud modems, you took any shortcut that you could.

1337 was big back then. All FPS games did as introduce it to the mainstream.

'Advanced Leet' is a cheap knockoff.
Those of us who actually KNOW leet know that it's lame to use lines and slashes :P

I like both styles. :)

I enjoy all the little bonuses I find when taking time to visit different gaming communities. I 1st found out about leet when I was enjoying my 1st online game, Red Alert. I enjoyed trying to talk using it, but it was hard. Then they came out with those easy to use translator programs... Pft.
