    Hello,

I wanna start off with a theme deck of my beloved Venusaur.

So far I got the concept of playing and deckbuilding, just have a few questions to be sure:

I have a Venusaur ex (stage2) and a Venusaur EX (basic) on my list.
    - is ex and EX the same? do i have to choose / mix the playset or can i play 4 + 4?

-also ex and EX question: can Mega Venusaur EX evolve from either one of these or does it need to be the basic EX?

thanks in advance for helping me out

I'm guessing you're playing Unlimited format.

Based on what I can find, it looks like Pokémon ex (eckz) and Pokémon EX (ee-eckz) are each their own thing, so Mega Venusaur EX cannot evolve from Venusaur ex.

Lowercase ex and uppercase EX are not the same card type. Functionally, they play very similarly to each other relative to the eras they were released in (ex from 2003 to 2007, EX from 2011 to 2015), but they are still two separate card types. Also, all upper case EX Pokemon are basics, except for the Mega ones, which, to now answer your second question, have to evolve from the basic EX specifically, not the lowercase ex.

Lowercase ex were Basic Pokemon if they were the first and only stage of their evolution lines at the time the card was printed, and a Stage 1 or Stage 2 if they were evolved forms. The closest modern design equivalent to the old lowercase ex cards is actually the GX cards from the Sun & Moon blocks.

Also, if you play, buy a box of card sleeves to sleeve your deck with to protect that Venusaur ex, that card's extremely valuable if it's authentic (market price on a near mint one on TCGPlayer is $200, and even a damaged holofoil is still listed for just under $50, meaning someone probably got $20-$25 from that card shop for it), so that way it's in decent condition if you're ever in a financial pinch and need to sell it.

yes, unlimited, i was invited to a playgroup with "just play what you want" style.

i've been collecting and trading since forever but never played, i guess it's a good start.

thanks for the help, may i ask where you got the info? i couldn't find anything

Honestly, just off the top of my head knowledge that was iirc announced way back when EX cards debuted in 2011, to make clear they were not the same as ex cards and were not being treated as the same card type in Japan.

Here's a useful resource for rules questions: https://compendium.pokegym.net/

It's not on Pokemon.com, but it's maintained by a few long time judges. The rulings posted there are official, but the compendium itself is not official. It is still acknowledged as a useful ruling's resource by TPCI since it's an aggregation of official rulings.
