This is try #2 at getting a good game of Mafia* going. Last time... Well, apparently, getting nine people to pay attention is too much to ask.
So, I ask you all... If you're going to be in this, be committed.
Now, because I hate boring things, I'm mixing it up by assigning each player a role, which can have one to two abilities, depending upon which side they are on. Also, some roles have special win conditions.
Yeah. I'll write a fancy intro if I can get this thing off the ground.
Once we get enough people, I'll PM roles and such, along with reminders of abilities and all that. The abilities will be written so that it won't be obvious who's who.
The Roles:
Name (Origin) - Ability if sided with the villagers. / Ability if sided with the Mafia. Third Party Role
Furude Rika (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) - Wins if (and only if) she survives until the end of the game / Wins if she is the last one alive.
Ryuuguu Rena (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) - Can follow someone at night to see what actions they took. / Kills don't get discovered (announced) until the next day, and the victim is silently removed from the game.
ShMion Sonozaki (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) - Will always appear guilty when investigated (Shion Sonozaki) / Will always appear innocent when investigated (Mion Sonozaki)
Osaka (Azumanga Daioh) - Wins by getting lynched.
Zero (Geass) - Wins if (and only if) a certain player gets lynched.
Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) - Once a night, may investigate a player to determine if they are innocent or guilty. (Always Villager)
Sherlock* Shellingford (Tantei Opera Milky Holmes) - Once a night, may investigate a player, but will always receive an "innocent." / Once a night, may act as a diversion for another player, redirecting all actions towards the other player to her. (For example, if two other cops investigate Player X, they will both investigate Sherlock instead)
Villefort (The Count of Monte Cristo) - Once a night, may investigate a player, but will always receive a "guilty." / At the beginning of the game, chooses a (non-Mafia) player. If Villefort is killed, the chosen player's role is revealed to all. If the chosen player dies before Villefort... Tough luck.
Sakuya Izayoi (Touhou Project) - Can remove one player from the game for one night (Player cannot act/be acted upon. Player returns to the game the following day) / Works alone, can kill at night (Sided with the Mafia)
Marisa Kirisame (Touhou Project) - Once per game, gets an anonymous kill during the daytime. (Always Mafia)
Explanations as to Why I Picked the Characters for the Roles
Furude Rika - Her objective is to see the world after June of 1983, so it's only fitting that she wins by surviving.
Ryuuguu Rena - She's a stalker, and she cleanly got away with a double murder.
ShMion Sonozaki - ShMion is actually just my favorite fanterm, referring to both Sonozaki sisters. Mion's the next Sonozaki Head, so it makes sense that her record is completely clean on the surface. Shion, however, is the black sheep, hence the reason why she's perma-guilty.
Osaka - Do I really need to explain this? Yes, yes I do. Osaka's extremely spacey, and, so, would probably enjoy trying to get herself lynched.
Zero - Zero makes everyone else do his dirty work for him. In this case, moving the village against his target.
Sherlock Holmes - This time, I really don't need to explain it.
Sherlock Shellingford - She's extremely naive ("Always gets innocent"), and a loudmouth ("Diversion").
Villefort - Originally, was going to be Inspector Javert, but I realized Javert wouldn't join the Mafia in a million years. :/ So, to make it fit better, I made him Villefort, the corrupt, selfish bureaucrat.
Sakuya Izayoi - Time stopping assassin.
Marisa Kirisame - This girl is a loose cannon. So, logically, she'll probably just carve a bloody path to victory.
Why not just give the characters generic names?
This way is more fun.
So, yes. The point is, with multiple roles, you know which roles are in the game, but you don't know which side they're on, or what they can do. Therefore, it's a good idea to hide your role unless absolutely necessary, and work behind the scenes to win.
Most of the roles were inspired by EpicMafia, admittedly.
So, yes. Any takers?
*Note the similarity in first names between Shellingford and Holmes. The idea is that, while a character knows that they are, indeed, Sherlock, they won't know which Sherlock until a day or two. So, the point is, if you're Sherlock... The other Sherlock could be in play. (I could've found a Sherlock name for Villefort, but... Meh)
