Making a region map

Hello.I have been trying to make a region map(like the one we see in town maps).But whatever i make,turns out to be nothing but a splash of colours on a shape(i tried using keldeo as a base).So my question is this,how to make a good looking region map(something like in hgss)?

THe only thing I can suggest is look at official maps, and practise.
Literally, practise is one of the only methods to "get good".

yeah! use good online programs and try to keep the cities on a 12x12 grid if you intend on using Pokemon Essentials.
