I'm playing through Super Mario 64 for the first time, from the virtual console. I think its a really awesome game and all but its personally a really hard game or at least on some missions/stars.

After "Bowser in the Dark World", the red coins in that mission. The game really starts to stack up the difficulty.

I find the jumps hard to do sometimes, some of them like the long jump and triple jump, seem to only work when they feel like it.

Although still, its a really great game and i'm still going for 100% even if i lose my mind, doing so.

Which leads me on to my question;
Have you played Super Mario 64 (virtual console, N64 or DS), How far did you get and which stars/missions did you find the hardest to collect.

It's been years since I last played on my N64 and played Mario Kart 64. I used to play it often when I was little though, and I would love to now, except for the fact that i'm missing a power cord to play many of my wonderful games on my N64... But the only strong memory I ever really remember the most about playing it, was during one of my birthday parties where a couple of my friends and I got together and just battled each other in the battle mode. (I think they had a mode like that, but I don't remember at all, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong)

I played the original N64 version of Super Mario 64 and the DS remake. When I was younger, it took me a long time to master the long jump. And eventually I just always used because its faster than running XD

When you finish, if you end up liking the game and the genre try out Banjo-Kazooie if you haven't played it before. It takes the formula that Mario 64 pioneered and just polishes and perfects it.

Seeing this thread, I just feel like taking out my old N64 console and play that game again. xD

If I can remember that last playthrough, I haven't collected every star. I got up to like... 75 stars and I couldn't beat Bowser :( HE WAS SO HARD TO BEAT. .__.

I might go for the DS version of it, though. It's nice to relive those nostalgic moments. :3

Yeah, you should. Its a really awesome game, you just need some some alot of all the patience, in the world and some luck and skill :)

Yeah I want to try Banjo Kazooie actually, I heard it uses the same engine as SM64. I will indefinably have to try it now ^^

Oh I want to play Mario Kart, I need to buy it. I'm sure its an awesome game.

Using nothing more than grit, mlg skillz and GameFAQs I collected every star. Although, collecting those Red Coins on EVERY LEVEL was a pain. Just so tedious.
Yes, tedious...If i ever see a red coin again, ill explode. (Even if I want to play Mario Sunshine), which is even worse. :o

I suppose so, but I still want to play it. I have for a long time but I could never find a copy

100% it
In my opinion, it wasn't nearly as hard as Sunshine.

Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Donkey Kong 64 are terrific platform adventure collect-a-thons. Much better than Super Mario 64 (or Sunshine too for that matter)

I only played DK Country, which is a brilliant game, now I wonder. Do you think the 64 version is superior?

They're different. Very different. They don't play like each other at all.

I prefer the artstyle, mood, and atmosphere of DKC. DK64 is more cartoony and comical. But, that aside... they play different. DK64 is a collect-a-thon, not a left-to-right platformer. DK64 is also waaay easier

I will definitely pick up a copy of DK64 and Banjo. Thanks for the advice :)

Dude Tick Tock Clock. That place was so BA. I loved being able to control the speed of the clock or whatever. It was also the hardest level. Like Jesus. Everything was moving.

Boo's Haunted Mansion was totally my favorite though. I'm a huge fan of Boo, mansions, and secret/hard to reach places. It was like everything I love in a game.

I got around 30 stars on the ds version and Donkey Kong Country is a good game but i have not played Donkey Kong 64

I completed the N64 and the NDS, DS was alot harder because of having to use certain characters and new missions, the N64 took alot of timme to with the red coins.

I'm replaying the DS version at the moment on my 3DS. Trying it out with the Circle Pad. Plays a little bit better, but having a run button instead of analog controls is a bit of a pain.

Donkey Kong 64 is entirely different because it's a separate game completely, not a remake of the Country series.

It's very fun in my opinion; I recommend it.

got all 120 stars from the last time I remember playing it. have it on my PC in the form of a Rom and a Virtual Console download. but man, getting it the first time on N64 was awesome; it was the first 3D game I'd played as a kid, and not to mention when we heard Mario make all those different shouts and stuff; me and my old man just started busting our guts from laughing so hard; especially whenever you let Mario just fall asleep where he lies down and just mumbles about Italian food. it was just really funny the first time around, basically. XD
