Note: I'd like to see if there's any interest amongst competitive players to discuss how they use certain Pokémon in Gym battles. Since this is the first of its kind, I'll see if this can be a weekly thing. Let's start with our first Pokémon:
Wigglytuff
Wigglytuff is a tough Pokémon, no doubt about it. It's one of those Pokémon that you really shouldn't judge off the bat by its CP level due to its inflated HP pool and low defense. A Wigglytuff with the right moveset can take on many Pokémon that are significantly above its CP, including the powerhouse Dragonite. For example:
This makes Wigglytuff a key player in leveling prestige in a friendly Gym. As attacking an opposing team's Gym does not take into account CP differential (each defeated Pokémon drops prestige points by a flat 500), you're better off going by basic matchups. However, for training your own Gym, Wigglytuff's surprising DPS output and sustainability makes it perfect for racking up huge prestige points.
Pound is actually the highest DPS quick move in the game and Wigglytuff is the best candidate for the move as it's currently the only Pokémon with relatively high base attack stat and gains STAB from it (Clefable and Jynx have higher base attack stats, but neither gets STAB). For Normal-type attacks, Pound also generates the second most energy per second for charge moves, right behind Scratch. So when you combine that with Wigglytuff's STAB Hyper Beam or Play Rough (Dazzling Gleam's high cooldown makes it the worst of the three charge move options), you have a serious threat.
Do you have a Wigglytuff? What is your experience with it?
