The following isn't really a tutorial, but it's just suggestions for those who are or will make a fan game, whether now or in the near future. Hope this helps and btw, I'm not a pro at making games, otherwise I'd complete my own, but my suggestions here are all based on what I've seen over and over and over.

    - If you wanna see completion, DO NOT promise too much, otherwise you'd waste too much time.(A good but common example, don't say I wanna have johto, kanto and hoenn in my game if you don't know the work required. Tedious work is involved which means redoing a whole bunch of route & city maps and getting unreliable people to do it for you. In any case, the most reliable person is you.)

    - Don't promise a whole lot of new pokemon. (example, you'll need to draw up and them out. What people want in new pokemon is not mixes of old ones, they want the actual NEW, original stuff. The more you promise new pokemon which takes a while to work on, the more time you waste, trying to finish your game.)

    - To start a game, u gotta have at least a cent to your name. In other words, there's gotta be something you can do. Even if you're inexperienced, try to learn how do to something like how I'm learning to sprite better than I used and I'm also trying other different things. Before, I didn't believe this, but people will only flock to the ones who have some kinda talent and leadership aura.

    - Never, never, never start a game if you're weak-willed about what you're doing. You gotta know what you want done and that will take alot of planning depending on how you are. The more you plan, the more you have less of a hard time controlling your info. Once again, start small if you're a beginner and don't know the hardships of game making; only set your sights on big stuff if you are patient and are willing to endure what comes at you.)

    Hope this helps.

I strongly agree with you there, MetaMew. I hope people listen to this. Everything that you have said should be done here, but sadly it isn't. Maybe the Administrators should disable making threads, and request to make a thread to the mods of the Gamemaking board? Since there are so many problems, maybe something along those lines could fix it. Crazy, I know, but I'm getting tired of seeing pretty good-sounding projects get thrown by the wayside. This is just a little rant of mine....lol

I agree, I've started loads of games and I never finished them, but the latest couple of games I've been doing I'm sticking too. I think it's because people got annoyed that I kept canceling my games.
