@all other event organizers who play on the server, feel free to give input as well

what do we want people to build?
what restrictions are we setting for the builds?
where on the server are we going to set aside for this event? are we going to let people build wherever, set aside a plot for each participant (with all these plots being adjacent to each other), or create one giant plot that only the participants can enter? i'm thinking a border expansion will probably be necessary depending on how many people sign up.
are people only able to use their own blocks, or will we give everyone a predetermined collection of blocks to use along with their own blocks?
what are the prizes going to be?
what are the criteria for judging?

    -`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-

i'm thinking we have everyone build castles since it fits the overall theme of the server, but anything will work. plot size i think should be somewhat large since castles tend to be large. maybe 35x35 or near? i don't want these plots to cover the whole y-axis though, maybe 10 - 20 blocks under and 40 - 50 blocks above. i also think it wouldn't do any harm to give people a double chest filled with stone, glass, wooden planks (the type of wood could be dependent upon the participant, which they could specify in the sign-up; else we default to oak), torches, and whatever other blocks that would like nice for a castle.

We can build plots in the sky, then when it's over, just wipe all the plots. It'd be lame to delete their work, but better for the overall quality of the server.

The theme for the GT is Olympics, so it might be better to have them design Greek/Rome style buildings with quartz and stuff. That would also benefit us in deleting the plots after (maybe except the winner's), since it wouldnt fit the server's theme.

I'm definitely down to clown with a Greek or Roman theme. I would say Greek since it's more appropriate with Olympic roots. We could go with temples, houses, theatres, etc. or stadiums to further fit the Olympic theme.

I'm not sure what the capabilities of the server are, but I think that, depending on how many people will join, you could put say, plots size 50 sq blocks and have everyone build something to do with Greece/Olympics. Give broad requirements, then you'll get a lot of interesting designs and builds.

Give everyone whom enters creative. I don't think restricting the number of blocks used will do much, except deter people. Of course, perhaps limit the types of blocks usable and disqualify anyone that doesn't comply.

If the winner/runners up are on the sever, perhaps give them $1,000/Stack of diamonds/Special plot or plot protection if they can't afford it outside of the town perhaps? (You know what I'm referring to there :P )

And judging should be done by players on the current server perhaps? People with best builds in your eyes become judges for this contest? I don't really know for the last point, that's mostly your decision as EO.

I may edit this if I think of something else or change my mind about an idea :)

@aiden we are also considering to host the event in a separate world on the same server (Multiverse). If that's the case, then I wouldn't mind giving people creative if the inventories will not carry over from the contest world to the main world. For prizes, I'm thinking some amount of diamonds or cash, or maybe one block/item of their choosing (for first place) and the others could get gold or iron.

For judging, I'd prefer if it was just me, Klippy, Juno, and Mage, but I suppose we could let the other members have some influence over the winners. I want to hear what the other EOs have to say.

I like the Greek theme idea as well. I think it would be interesting to give builders creative mode and not limit the blocks they use at all, that way it's purely a competition of skill and creativity - it'll be more fun for the builders and for us to judge too.

If we're using Multiverse, I think people should be allowed to choose where in the contest world to build, instead of having like a row of plots on flat land, so that they have a choice in surroundings and scenery. They can just tell us where the coords are when they submit.

As for the criteria, judges can use a rubric like Klippy and Matt did for the Halloween contest, with each aspect marked from 1-5 - something like:

Application of Theme - how well the build fits the Greek/Olympics theme
Concept & Originality - whether they went with something obvious like a Greek temple, or if they thought ouside the box and came up with a more creative idea
Attention to Detail - how well they used decorative blocks and such to add detail to the build, whether or not interior of buildings are nicely furnished, etc.
Technique & Architecture - whether the overall structure is nicely designed and built or crude and basic

For example, anyway. If we want to let other players have a say in the judging process, there can be a "Player's Choice" category or something too. Everyone can cast a vote on which build they like the most and whoever gets the most votes from other players can win a small prize for that.

Also, just a thought and I don't know where this fits in, but I think they should also be able to specify what texture pack they want us to judge their build in, since some blocks look quite different depending on what you're using.

I am very out of the loop lol so I might repeat myself from one of my previous posts.

Once I am back I will check out multiverse and see what we can do with it. Worse case scenario, we might have to rent a cheap server for a month and host the event there, which was an option Klippy suggested a while back. But yes people can build wherever they want to, and we can use the surrounding landscape as a criterion. I thought up of criteria back when I first made this thread but didn't post it for whatever reason. Now I can't remember what they were lol but I think all of them were covered in Juno's post.

So here is a rough draft of our criteria based on the above:
-Originality } Whether or not their structure is copied straight out of an image from Heraklion or Naxos, etc or their structure is completely unique.
-Effort } How much time was spent on the structure and its size?
-Design } How well the structure is decorated and how well the different blocks blend together. How did the creator use the landscape to their advantage?
-Architecture } What exactly was built? Is it a generic temple or is it an Ancient Greek twist on modern architecture? (other factors here) (I personally think this category should be scaled from 1 - 3 instead of 1 - 5)

Prizes are another priority. I don't know whether we should give currency, blocks, plugin stuff (like Guardians, plots, etc.) or something else. Alternatively, we could have an assortment of valuable blocks, with the first place winner getting first pick, second getting second, and third getting third. The Players' Choice could get fourth pick.

I don't know how I feel about having the surrounding landscape being used as a criterion, since people might not see everything on the map, etc. I'm all for participants choosing their location for visual effect, but I don't think they should be judged on where they choose to build.

Multiverse/rental server is totally fine with me. Whatever Wobbu is capable of setting up.

I'm don't have much of an opinion on prizes. I like the idea of plots, but I also like Wobbu's idea of having an assortment of valuable blocks.

@magelandscape fair point. Rather than being its own criterion, the surrounding land could be used with the overall design and creativity. I think land should at least play some role in the judging.

Hmm. I agree that it should be an additional criterion, but I also think it should be 1 - 3 rather than 1 - 5. As long as the structure has some relevance to the theme, then it's fine with me.

is it good enough?? i thought the GT didn't start for another week so i thought i had more time but i don't so i copied the general theme for this year's GT ;__; anyways does anything need to be explained better or is anything missing?

    Minecraft Building Contest
    Introduction
Welcome the the Minecraft Building Contest, part of the 2015 PokéCommunity Get-Together Olympics! Players will be competing against one another to see who can create the best build that meets the contest's requirements. The contest takes place on the official PC MC multiplayer server. The theme of the contest is Greek Architecture. You can interpret this theme any way you want, the more creative you are the higher your build will score during the judging.

    □ □ □

    Joining the Server
For those who are unfamiliar with the PC MC server, it requires your in-game Minecraft name to be added to a whitelist before you are allowed to join the server. If you are not on this list, please post your in-game name in this thread.

The IP of the server is: 172.245.34.57

If you are interested in playing on the server after the contest ends, more details may be found here.

    □ □ □

    Entering the Contest
For everyone who wants to enter the contest, please post your interest in this thread. If you are already on the whitelist, you do not need to post your in-game name. The contest takes place in the server's creative world, not the main world. A teleport to this world is found slightly to the left of the tree farm, adjacent to the main world's initial spawn area. Once you have found a place to build, please post the coordinates of that location in this thread.

The contest begins on July 6th. You will have one week to submit your creation. When you finish your build, please so say in this thread (and post the coordinates if you haven't done so already). Once the week has ended and the deadline has been reached, the judges will begin judging. This process should not take more than a couple of days. During this time, we would like all of the participants to review the other entries and vote for their favorite build. The build with the most votes will win the Players' Choice award, which is explained in the Prizes section.

    □ □ □

    Criteria
We will be judging your build based on four perspectives:
    • Application of Theme
how well the build fits the Greek/Olympics theme
    • Concept & Originality
whether you went with something simple like a Greek temple, or if you thought outside the box and came up with a more creative idea
    • Attention to Detail
how well you used decorative blocks and such to add detail to the build, whether or not the interior of buildings are nicely furnished, etc.
    • Technique & Architecture
whether the overall structure is nicely designed and built or crude and basic

Each criterion is weighed on a scale of 1 to 5 points, with 20 being a perfect score.

    □ □ □

    Prizes
Prizes will be given to the three highest scoring builds, along with a bonus prize for the Players' Choice build. The first place winner (the player who earned the highest score) will earn a gold medal for their representing region, the second place winner will earn a silver medal for their representing region, and the third place winner will earn a bronze medal for their representing region.

All three winners, along with the Players' Choice winner, will each be given the opportunity to select one in-game prize from the server's secret vault, be it some rare and valuable blocks for the main world, loads of in-game currency, special command permissions, or more! Each prize only has one quantity, so once a prize is selected by one winner, another winner won't be able to select that same prize. The Players' Choice award can stack with a main award, meaning that if the second place winner wins the Players' Choice award, he/she will be able to select two prizes. The first place winner will have first dibs on a prize, then second, third, and then players' choice. This priority only lasts for one week after the contest ends, so claim your prize as soon as possible!

All participants will receive a PC emblem to be proudly displayed on your profile!

omg wobbu told me 5 total. gdi.

lol five for each category ;P

also y'all don't forget that we might get a couple more entries later. Flannery Lue already submitted hers after the deadline and someone else told me while I was setting up the UHC that they planned on submitting after the deadline. And there are also the unfinished builds that may be submitted. I realize it's inconvenient but I wanted to give people as much time as possible >_> But we'll stop accepting late entries once it hits midnight here.
