Actually I have a Japanese version of Platinum, and it can share the Rotom key with English copies of the game, I found this out when my cousin who doesn't have access to Wi-Fi wanted to get the key as well.
 
If you're in the US, you can't complain about events to Europeans... We haven't even been able to get a legit Celebi yet.

I'm not complaining. 'sides, no ones gotten Celebi. I don't even think anyone besides the Japanese have gotten Arceus...
 
If you have a pirated version, couldn't you just download pokesav and put in the wondercard? Unless you want to be legit about it and not have it at all.
 
Arharhar, this is kinda funny. God, you have no idea how panicky I was about the event. /enters story
I kept delaying trying to do the event thinking I'd have plenty of time. However, it suddenly became the 16th, and I was like D: What to do? (at this point I thought it ended on the 17th). I went from website to website trying to confirm the date and everybody said July 5th. However, I eventually discerned that it was the 19th that it ended, and I was relieved.
Anyways, my Wi-Fi doesn't work at home due to security, plus it was real messed up when I tried to temporarily disable it. The 19th came, so I went to McDonalds. No luck. Went to another McDonalds. No luck. Went to EB Games. No luck. Panic time starts now. I wandered around my the shopping centre searching for unsecured connections. I found one, but reception was weak. I continued wandering until it was strong enough. BAM! Gift received - Secret Key! 8D Happy time go!

(Also, the whole time I thought I had to defeat the E4 to do the event, but I was also trying to SR for a Shiny Giratina, so I spent hours SRing so I could defeat the E4. Then I was told I could just run from it and SR again in Turnback Cave, so that was a relief. But I didn't have to defeat the E4 anyway. Sigh.)
 
I don't remember the exact words, but someone said if you HAD to beat the elite four, then less people would show up at the real life events/get stuff from wifi events.
If you're at a pokemon event (such as TRU / gamestop) the wireless signals could unlock mystery gift for you so if some kid just started and didn't know how to get mystery gift, he could still get it at the event AND the event pokemon.
 
i tottloly freaked when i heard about the rotom event thing. but now i have a lawn mower form rotom in my box, and am happily bragging to others about it who dndt get the secret key. im wishing that they would do a celebi or arcues event in the US. japanese people r so lucky!

Pffft, at least the US gets events. I live in Canada and we NEVER get events, even though we have Toys 'R' Us stores.
