    [PokeCommunity.com] motion-sensing for PS3 and XBOX360

    Release date: TBA (Christmas?)
    Platform: Xbox 360

Motion-sensing gaming shifts from Nintendo Wii to rival consoles in 2010. Project Natal is Microsoft's codename for its new motion-and-voice-sensing Xbox 360 control system. A camera, infrared sensor and microphone works out where you are in the room, tracks your entire body down to even small hand motions, can handle multiple people in the room at once, and also recognises voices. Imagine gripping an imaginary steering wheel and turning it to steer, then talking to a computer-controlled pit crew to tell them you're coming in to change tyres.
Sony's rival PS3 "Wand" is a controller you hold, so won't track your finger or leg movements. But Sony promises it will be more accurate than the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii systems.

so i just want to know what everyone else thinks about sony and microsoft jumping on the motion-sensing band wagon
and if you think they will be as successful as nintendo.

This is just crazy old news. I have Wii as I like Nintendo's consoles the most and I like the possibilities on Wii. But now everyone wants to do the same as Wii has the winner's place.

First, XBOX360. I really don't think this is so special. And is it funny to speak to TV, when you can just go and talk to your friend, which has much more things to talk. Hopefully we don't have to start to do everything between four walls with just TV screen with us, as we can do the same outside with friends. (I mean games like football, ice-hockey, etc.)

PS3, I don't like this one. It remembers too much Wii's WiiMote. Nothing to say, this is just crazy idea without any good idea inside. You monkeys! Don't mimic Nintendo! :P

Just with few (and few more) words:
Wii is what it is, don't do the same as you can't get as high anymore.
Motion sensing controls has already gone old.

personally i don't like the idea of microsoft and sony
    using motion sensing
i really don't think it's going to be as successful as the wii

This is just from msn >:(

Anyway, I think it's a good move. If MS and Sony break into the casual market and steal the Wii's thunder, Nintendo might actually start pumping out some classics again instead of the sub par rubbish that makes up 90% of the Wii's library.

While the basic idea is motion sensing, how well does the Wii detect motion? The motion of a controller and pressure on a board. This is why I think the Xbox 360's motion detector will go over well. It doesn't use gyro's or some complex controller. It uses cameras, which detect the movement of the player. Sure, the player causes the movement and pressure changes of the WiiMote and BalanceBoard, but what changes in the game depends on the motion of the controller as a whole, not the player itself. Something could change if the WiiMote fell off of a table. But, with the player being the real "controller", if you will, this brings motion sensing to a whole new level.

Also, Sony's "Wand" sounds like a black, Playstation-button-style edition of the WiiMote, in my mind, at least.

I think Microsoft's sounds really good, and will buy it when it comes out, but Sony's sounds pretty much copy of the Wii remote, without Motionplus, but we'll see how it goes

Just wow. I've heard about "Project Natel" for the Xbox360, but not the "Wand" For PS3. It just seems ridiculous to me. MS and Sony would go as far as to copy the "Wii" I mean it's sad really. They can't win over Nintendo fans so they're both trying to create something better....but it doesn't mean I wouldn't try it to see for myself if it's really a fail as I think it is. Until then I have neutral feelings for both "Natel & Wand".

Few years and new consoles appears again, why do they use time to make those things to these consoles? When new Nintendo's console comes again it has something new again (maybe they have something in mind already) and nobody wants something like old consoles as new consoles hits the store.

This is so useless... And again, don't even try to copy Nintendo! You can't be as good as it is already!

Sony's one is nothing like the wiimote.

Sony's motion works with the Playstation Eye for true 1.1 motion, it tracks every singular movement. It's going to be a LOT more responsive than the Wiimote. It's basically a massive update to the already existing playstation eye.

I dunno, I really hate it when someone tries to slant something they know next to nothing about.

well i for one can't wait to try project natal i have a 360 and it wouldn't hurt to have a new accessory
i think it all depends on what games they bring out for it

I'm looking forward to trying both. It's safe to say they'll both offer new ways to use motion, I dunno if I'll buy the PS3 motion thing yet, but I'm considering it.

I have heard of these, but I do not believe that they will work like they should. Now, I may be bias, since I do not like the XBOX360, but... why? I know it's to try to get casual gamers on their side for more profits, but do you really want to be bogged down by crappy 3rd party games? Sure, it'll get some of them off the Wii, but here's the thing... it'll probably either work for a little while at best, or be unresponsive, but that's only for the first few that get out onto the market, because it's quite new. I'm surprised the Wii held up so well, but there's going to be something wrong, and while it would be fixed, a lot of people who tried it when it was still bad wouldn't want to try it again. Besides, it would be tough to play a bunch of games with what the 360 has going on, due to room space. Not to mention that for the voice parts, you'd have to learn various ways to say things. Sure, it wouldn't be hard to do, but still. Besides, to me, it wouldn't feel like a video game, it would feel like I'm just looking at the TV with my hand out. (Using the racing game as an example)

With the PS3 version... I don't really see much wrong. It might be too sensitive, but I don't know anything about the PS Eye.

Frankly, I just see this as a way to leech off of Nintendo. But that's normal, things evolve, and 'motion sensing' seems to be the wave of the future. But we'll see how it works out. I wouldn't rush out to get these things. Wait for a little bit, then get them when they have a chance to fix a few bugs, because trust me, there will be bugs. Major or Minor, they will be there.

    Edit: Post 888.

It seems... kinda desperate to me. But who am I to determine the success of a vidya game from The House That Bill Built? I don't think it will work nearly as well profit-wise as the Wii, because of various things. You still gotta buy the Xbox to use it, and there have to be good games for it, elseways it's a waste.

Natel is interesting, but...I don't know if I completely buy it. It creeps me out a little. I mean, I'm sure the motion stuff works. But the real life object scanning and putting them in your game? Interacting with that weird virtual kid who would do his homework? Just seems creepy.

Also, I like holding something. Pretending to hold a wheel when there's nothing in your hand for a driving game or holding the Wii Wheel? Which feels more natural? I like what Sony's going with over Natal just based on initial E3 impressions.

Im pretty sure this is part of that Project Natal thing that will include games that use motion sensing. Im not too sure how well that will work out but I just hope that it will be worth the money if I end up buying it. But to me it really just sounds like being able to play wii games on other consoles.

As long as it doesn't distract the main stream gaming development, I don't mind at all.

It was always going to happen after Nintendo created it.

*Resists the urge to pull out old comments from Sony regarding motion sense as a gimmick*

Anyways, Sony and Microsoft seem to be attempting to test the waters of this new and unexplored concept, seeing if they can pull out any profits from the Wii's gem. I can expect a bunch of angry people throwing tomatoes at them and calling them plages, and some well-ground fans that dispise motion controls back away from the two, but all in all, so long as they don't rely on third parties to do the majority of the work (what am I saying, of course they will), they'll be able to pull out some profits from their projects, though maybe not as much as expected.

I was most excited about Project Natal, not gonna lie. XD

Though it would seem that while Sony might have a run for their own money, they will fall in the same hole, as I don't imagine more people going out to buy a ps3 console, compared to an x-box 360 one. I mean at work xb360 is a lot more popular, so naturally it would seem that Natal would follow suit (especially if Natal is supposed to be compatible with vista/7 as per Gates).

But they already used motion sensing in games via PSEye and sixaxis, so motion is nothing new to Sony.
