CHAPTER 1 - The Dragon, the Kitsune, and the Ice Serpent
/through Ayame Hikaru's eyes/
I slowly got out of bed, still tired. I never was one to get up early. Still, the Soul Reaper Academy required it. Especially on a day like today. I was being transferred to Squad 9, and that was all I knew. I had been out of the Soul Reaper Academy for a while, actually, but nobody wanted me in their squad. My friend, Izumi Michi, was being transferred to the same squad as me. Me and Izumi were close, having trained together back in the Academy. I was also good friends with my soon-to-be Captain, Amaya Amarante. I wasn't nervous at all. Actually, I was eager to finally be in a Squad. I sat in silence, thinking of all the fun things I could finally do. I jumped up, startled, as I heard a loud knock at the door. Calming down after a couple minutes, I walked over and opened the door, smiling upon realizing who it was. "Amaya!" I greeted, happy to see her. I gazed into her eyes, sparkling pools of blue liquid, as she smiled back. "Hello Ayame." I heard her greet me. Amaya had always amazed me. I don't know if it was the way she handled certain situations, or if it was her cheerful personality, but something made her like a mother to me. "Do you want to come inside? We can have some tea." I suggested. It was nice out, but tea sounded good right about now. "Sure, why not?" Upon hearing her reply, I turned around and headed back in, glancing back for a moment to make sure she was following. I let her get comfortable at the table and wandered off to make the tea. The whole time I was making it, I couldn't get the excitement of today out of my mind. After a few minutes, I emerged from the room I was in with two cups of tea. I gave Amaya hers first, even making sure to call her 'Captain Amarante'. "There's no need to call me Captain. You know as well as I do that we're friends." From that point on, we spent half of the day chatting about how exciting it was to have me in her Squad. Still, something bugged me. I don't know what, but something just didn't feel right.
After a few hours of chatting, Amaya was called to go to a Captain's Meeting. We said goodbye and gave eachother a hug before she left. I guess I felt a little bit better after she left. Maybe it was just the fact that my best friend was now my Captain that was bugging me. I can't be so sure. Still, me and Amaya had planned a training session for tomorrow afternoon. I couldn't keep being bugged by a fact that couldn't change. As I sat down to enjoy a few more cups of tea, I found myself wondering what they talked about in Captain's meetings. I've never wanted to be a Captain, and know that I most likely never will be. Of course, this never bothered me. Still, I just had to wonder what Amaya and everybody else talked about. I drew my blade, looking over the sharp edges, hoping to distract myself from such thoughts. I eventually succeeded, being more interested in the sharp pointy tip of Kohakukasumi. Amaya had helped me figure out it's name, but I still hadn't managed to successfully use Shikai. Amaya even tried to help me when she had free time, though that wasn't often. I decided to go for a walk after a while, telling myself that there was nothing better to do. I wasn't expecting much from a simple walk around Seireitei, but I got more then what I wanted. I ran right into Captain Hitsugaya when we were walking around a corner. Nobody else was around, and for that I was thankful. I had fallen backwards from the impact, so he helped me up, not even really looking like he cared. We visited for a moment, and finally he brought up my being transferred to Squad 9. I blushed, trying desperately to hide it, and failing. Luckily he was looking the other way the whole time. After a couple more minutes, we decided it was time to get back to whatever we were doing, and said goodbye. It wasn't as thorough as when Amaya was visiting, we just waved at eachother and left the area. Hitsugaya, like always, didn't look like he cared much. I have always had a bit of a crush on him. Still, I tried not to let it show too obviously. After finishing my walk, I decided it was time for bed. I didn't like staying up late, and I had a training session tomorrow. I got comfortable, a now empty cup of tea by my side, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
