Name recognition and expectations

How far would you say a video game's developer/publisher influences your choice to purchase it, and your overall enjoyment of it? Are you likely to be more/less critical of a game because of the names attached to it - be that a series or a well-recognised developer? If you took away the brand name of a game that you really enjoyed that is part of a critically acclaimed series, do you think you would have enjoyed it as much as you did? In your estimation, to what extent does being part of a series contribute to a game's success? Is the quality in the name of the game, or in its content?

For me personally, I don't pay much attention to specific developers or publishers enough to be overly influenced by them. I am more inclined to buy things from franchises I already enjoy though, although mostly my choices are based on "this looks awesome".

As a general rule though, people get caught up in hype and stick to what they know. So, naturally, people will be more inclined towards games from well-known franchises and developers.

It does influence my thoughts to an extent.

For example, Dan Houser recently left Rockstar games so I'm wondering how it's going to influence future titles.

Then there's 2K games. When I see they've published a new game I expect many things are just a copy and paste from the previous year, and that it's going to be filled with pushes for me to buy loot boxes if I want any decent customization.

So I bought WWE 2K20 since it was on a major discount, and I was correct on everything. It's a publisher where I have low expectations, but I still try to enjoy the games.
