    Do you think Ash or one of his companions will ever name a pokemon they catch? Many charecters of the day had named pokemon and so did some reoccuring charecters (Sparky, Charla).

    When introducing himself, Ash usually says something along the lines of "Hi, I'm Ash and this is my partner Pikachu!". To me this sounds redundant (except maybe in Unova to people who dont know what a Pikachu is) because most people will know it's a Pikachu.

    If Ash were to name his pokemon though, what do you think good names for them would be?

    Nicknaming Pokemons? Well I do not root for that idea, I don't like nicknames, I hated it when Ritchie calls his Pikachu sparky and idk what was that charmander, Zippo? It just sounds un-natural to me. However, I know other ppl like such idea. If u ask me about a Nickname for Pikachu....IDK, I never nickname xD. Sorry I wish I could participate in this...

    I didn't mind any of Ritchie's nicknames. >.<

    I guess on of the main reasons why the writers have avoided any of the main cast from nicknaming their Pokémon was so it didn't confuse any viewers. Since say a new viewer started to watch, they may not have watched the episode in which Ash or any of the main cast had caught their Pokémon and nicknamed it, and then when they send them out and call out their nickname, the viewer would probably assume that species is called by that nickname. Bleh, hard to explain these things.

    I'm pretty sure most people in Unova know what a Pikachu is, since in the games, it's seen in a promotion on a building in Castelia City, and in the anime a few characters in Unova have mentioned how popular Pikachu are and how they've never seen on in real life n' what not.

    Here are some ideas I thought of for his Unova Pokémon;

    • Tranquill - Peckers (He first noticed her pecking on the ground)
    • Oshawott - Wotty (Simple shortened name, the end to give it a little ring)
    • Snivy - Grace or Smug (Not as random as you think, she seems to move very gracefully. Smug just goes along with it's look, but not sure I actually like that though.)
    • Tepig - Oinkers (Simple really, pig sound, I can't really think of anything else)
    • Scraggy - Tough (Goes along with his headstrong personality)
    • Swadloon - Happy (A happy and friendly Pokémon :3)

    I'm with you on that one. Giving them nicknames helped give them a unique personality that was different from Ash's pokemon. It's similar to how one pokemon always seems to get singled out from a pack of the same species by being shiney or having a bow on it's head, etc.

    On a side-note: I'm a big fan of giving pokemon nicknames, mostly because I've played the games many times and I inevitably use the same species multiple times on my main team. When I eventually put my team into my hall-of-fame, the nicknames really help in giving the pokemon a unique personality and I can remember playing that particular game easier. (For example, I can easily discern 'Needles', my Beedrill from my FR favorites team, from 'Buzzer' the Beedrill from my all bug-type team.) That said, I don't generally like the nicknames that others give their pokemon and think that in most cases they're pretty unoriginal. I can totally understand how some people don't have a taste for nicknames in general, especially if they get stuck with these unoriginal names from trades.

    I do think that all the nicknames used in the anime have been pretty clever, so they're all ok.

    They should nickname them; it really does add something special instead of saying so and so's Pikachu or Togepi.
