Wonderful question-my explanation is that it is too small and doesn't support high-quality enough games, therefor making it never overheat.

could just be that Nintendo is WAY better than Sony in design

  • Moved to Video Gaming, where this is more likely to get a response.

  • Notice how it's also running on a tiny battery and still outlasts a laptop by a mile? Basically, the CPU is so slow and basic that it really doesn't generate enough heat. They're 67 and 33Mhz CPUs, so the power usage and heat level are minimal, which is normal for ARM chips.

It's no different from a phone. In fact, there are numerous phones that outpower the DS by a lot.

It's not because there aren't enough "high-quality" games on it, it's just the way everything is designed. The DS's processors are very low-powered, which means they don't require as much electricity, which then means that it doesn't generate a lot of heat.

Rule of thumb is if a portable video game system needs a fan, it's too power hungry. And if you think the PSP needs one, the only thing actually spinning inside of it is the UMD drive for the video games.

  • Actually, the DS is so tiny and has so little stuff to take care of, that it doesn't even heat.

Some of the oldest netbooks (such as the first Eee PC) weren't even felt with cooling. Now, new netbooks do have cooling, but it can be heard.

    And yeah, interesting question. :-P
