In Generation III we were introduced to weather effects, in Generation V we were introduced to seasons, since Generation VII is an odd numbered generation, we will most likely be introduced to a new feature that affects the overworld... So, what could it be? I was thinking it could be tides, with the region possibly being based on Hawaii (due to speculation), but then I remembered that tides already existed in Generation III and OR/AS.

Personally, I don't believe Gamefreak ever really thinks about doing this or that for odd/even numbered generations. However, I think the obvious thing would either a more relevant day/night system.
Something with lunar cycles or times of day or -as you said- with tides, I could see.
I think something a bunch of people are expecting are Lunar and Solar Eclipses. While it's something that doesn't seem like it'd be available until late game (like after the climax with the evil team). What if the Legendaries have connection to their respective Eclipse and the villainous team activates one (obviously depending on the version if they're going the GenIII route) and it actually changes something with the overworld, as well as the Legendary's Forme, and has some in-battle effect? Then we can activate Eclipses at will with the Legendary (1: activating in-battle with a signature move and the effect lasts after the battle or 2: Having the Legendary in-party while interacting with some object like whatever the Team Whatever uses to bring the eclipse).
Each kind of eclipse would have a different effect in the overworld and in battle, but each game only has one (with its respective legendary). That would give both versions something different and version exclusive. And if you traded to get the other Legendary, you could use that one as well to unlock the other type of Eclipse.
I'm getting a Legend of Zelda feeling about this.

I know the OP has a point, given odd numbered generations often introduced something new to the overworld, but for some reason I feel like we don't need another overworld condition to be introduced. That's just me though.

Maybe we'll get Moon phases and Sun phases, considering the names of the games...

The problem is that in the overworld we don't see much of the sky, and while we did get some good camera angles in 6th Gen they don't occur a lot. It's a neat concept but something I can't see happening.
