i always hated conforming and getting the starter everyone else got. in this game that's cyndoquil. that leaves me with totodile, since chikorita isn't very good.

i'd like to be able to have the team throughout the majority of the game. also i'd like to do it without using legendaries. it's much more fun that way. also i'm not going to spend 6 days in the safari zone so accessibility is important, too. so here's what i had in mind, i'm up for input as well as suggestions

    feraligatr
    slowbro
    gengar
    arkanine
    ampharos
    dragonite

the reason i picked this team is because all but dragonite are available before the third badge. dragonite is available shortly after

Moving to In-game Team Help as that's the section for team advice.

BTW Totodile is an oft-used starter in itself too, just so you know, but anyways it is also a good one to choose, often reliable and all. Slowbro is a neat Pokemon too but you already have a water type there... otherwise it seems pretty even. Note you'd need to do a trade back for gengar to evolve from Haunter, is all, and in actual fact you can get Dratini before beating the third gym. (Note it will take a bit of playing of Voltorb Flip, but hey! Alternatively if you do things right with the 8th gym, you can get one for free...with extremespeed (if you do things wrong you can still get it, just without that move).

feraligatr i'm using for power moves. slowbro i'm mainly using for his 6 resistances (fighting, steel, fire, water, psychic, and ice). plus slowbro has a versatile moveset (psychic naturally, healing move naturally, and just about every tm). he's staying in my lineup. i'd like to take dragonite out in favor of a fighting type (heracross probably) but i'd like to have something that can fly.

Crunch/Earthquake/Ice Fang/Waterfall is a good set for Feraligatr. Its what Im running at the moment. EQ covers its electric weakness. Ice Fang covers the grass weakness.

Thunderbolt/Thunder Wave/Signal Beam/Power Gem is one of the best Ampharos sets I have come across so far and is also what Im currently running in my team.

Gengar has alot of options. Psychic/Shadow Ball/Focus Blast/Hypnosis.
Hypnosis, while not exactly the most accurate, can be really useful in certain situations. It doesnt hurt to run Thunderbolt on Gengar in its place though if you want to.

Slowbro. Another pokemon I have used with some good success. Its a special attacker, if you want to keep it. I found that Psychic/Ice Beam/Surf/Rest is a good set. Just make sure its always holding a Lum Berry to wake it up straight away.

Arcanine is a little more complicated I have found. There are a couple of ways you can go.
    1) Flare Blitz/ExtremeSpeed/Sunny Day/Solar Beam
    2) Flare Blitz/ExtremeSpeed/Thunder Fang/Crunch
Personally, I prefer the second option. You don't need to waste time setting up.

I love Heracross as a replacement for Dragonite. It's a good solid pokemon with a really good Attack stat. Has a good movepool too really.
Earthquake/Brick Break/Rock Slide/Megahorn could be a way to go. Im honestly not too sure with this one, but EQ covers its weakness to Fire types. Rock Slide covers its Flying weakness. Megahorn and Brick Break for STAB.
    Its worth a look into.

These are just suggestions of mine. Im sure other members have other suggestions.

Focus Blast on Gengar, is like a Hail Mary play when it comes to the crunch.
Its either going to work perfectly, or fail miserably. Its a risk you have to take really. Its worth the type coverage that it gives nonetheless.
Heracross is the main fighting type in that team, with Gengar running FB as backup "just in case"
Of course coming up against dark types, particularly Karens Umbreon, you would send in Heracross, you wouldnt lead with Gengar just because it knows Focus Blast, if it doesn't hit first go. Umbreon will eat you alive.
