Hello! So I've recently gotten back into Pokemon and decided to come to PokéCommunity to discuss my Pokemoning endeavors. Anyway, I just ordered Pokemon Black and Pokemon Black 2 to get started on the fifth generation (I stopped playing right before these games came out). The games will arrive sometime in the next two weeks so I was hoping I could get some/any advice on how to go through these games before I start playing. Literally anything would be helpful. Thanks :)

Well, it'd be tricky for me to get a lot of advice written up at once, but I'd recommend checking out Pokemon information sites like Serebii and Bulbapedia which should have some accurate information about the games, such as items you can get, the Gym Leaders/Elite Four/Champion/other important characters, and also an online Pokedex complete with abilities, movesets and other information about the Pokemon.

That's what I'd usually recommend to a newcomer, just read all the information about B/W and B2/W2 that's on Bulbapedia and Serebii so you can get an idea about what you'll find in the games.

Good luck, and enjoy your games! Remember you're always open to ask a question here if you are ever in need of help.

Honestly, just enjoy the games, make sure to look in every nook and cranny for items and new places to explore and , in my opinion, go in without having to much of an idea of what the games are about and what Pokemon are available. I find it to be more fun when you have no idea what is coming and what Pokemon you can get, especially when you're just coming back from a long hiatus such as yourself. It allows for a great experience, similar to when you first started out in Pokemon and the excitement that came from it as you met new Pokemon and found new places. Especially with these two games, there are 151 brand new Pokemon for you to find, a la RBY, and make brand new memories with, no bias available towards other Pokemon since they aren't available.

Anyways enjoy the games! They are a fun series, especially the sequels (from what i've heard)

I'll give you one specific piece of advice for Black: The 4th Gym is an Electric type one, but it's much more important to have something with a good Rock attack than a Ground attack in that one.

The only advice I can give is ignore shelmet and karrablast as party members due to them being really weak untill you trade evo them. Other then that majority of the pokemon you can find(esp bug type OMG) range from decent to really good so you wouldn't really get stuck with a really bad team in black.

As visch said, since gen 5 was meant to be soft reboot so going in without knowledge of the pokemon and the gyms helps alot.

Don't ruin this one for Tivger ;)
I almost think it kind of ruins the game if you start out knowing all of everything? Personally, I just sort of ran through the game the first time, making sure to commit to memory most of the tricky things, helpful areas, and which Pokémon is which, typing, possible abilities and all that.
Then I play a second time through to actually be with the story and get a good feel for the characters.
Finally, I play a third time for a nuzlocke, or some sort of challenge, usually limiting my amount of everything (I once did where I could only have 1 Pokémon Center Heal per town without any Mart on Blue, Crystal and then Ruby. I made it through Blue's and Crystal's--really proud of this final battle--, but Ruby's saw my team at around level 30-35 at Elite Four and there was just no way).
And then I put my game down and move on to the next, and come back to these later.

The reason why... one word: Emolga. It's immune to Ground, which is why he's saying it's more important to use a Rock move and the Gym Leader in question uses two Emolga. Other than that, I don't want to spoil the other Gyms if you're more interested in playing blind.

    Spoiler:

Those Emolgas made me suffer. I ALWAYS went to get the TM for Rock Tomb, which is pretty easy to obtain, before i entered the gym.

I also must warn that the final boss of the main story is very tough, because his ace Pokemon has near-perfect type coverage, and is likely to be faster than you because of its high level.

GOD i suffered against him. His WHOLE team is very intimidating and the best team of any organization boss to date. It rivals Cyrus' team, which i also struggled against.

Play it blind like A MAN
You have the ability to play a Pokemon game blind, that's a rare thing now days, and you should cherish it.

My first team ever in those games was a Samurott, Unfezant, Leavanny, Boldore, Sigilyph and a Haxorus. I never really cared about the E4, so i stopped playing it after the 8th gym and started a new save. Sooo, i'll give ye some tips in this game..

In my opinion, the best starter is Oshawott. But out of the three, i always preferred Tepig.
Catch a Sawk/Throh/Timburr for the second gym. You can either keep it for your team, or box it.
The third gym is the easiest in the game.
Catch a Sandile for the 4th gym. Something that knows Dig and Rock Tomb is very good.
Watch out for the 5th Gym Leader's ace. It's a god damn killing machine.
Don't fall in love with the 6th Gym Leader, she's mine already!!1- I mean, the 6th gym is also pretty easy.
Same goes for the 7th gym...
You can sweep the 8th gym in like... 30 seconds.

That was for Black. Black 2 is awesome, so it's up to you whether i should or should not post about the gym leaders here.

Haha, thank you all! These were all very helpful! :)

I don't really care about playing the games blind--I'd like to know what I'm up against. My classes resume next week so I won't have too much free time, so having hints/tips to make gameplay easier/smoother are helpful. Xherdan, thank you very much! I don't think you need to post about the gym leaders though, as like Hikamaru said, I can always look them up on Serebii or something.

No advice is really needed. You got the games because you were curious. I find that being surprised is the only thing to truly hold my interest.

Remember that Audino's are a thing if you feel underpowered. They can make leveling up much easier for that tough battle you fear is ahead.
