Hi, I'm new to game making and I was wondering if someone could kinda guide me through the process of getting started and stuff. Like what programs to use, point me to some sprites, maps, blah blah. I know most of you guys won't but I'm just gonna ask in case some kind hearts on here will lend me a hand.

If you want to make a Pokémon game, I'd advise using RPG Maker XP *link removed*. You get 30 days free trial, and it costs $60 to buy after that. Probably the best $60 I've ever spent :P
Then, download poccil's starter kit (the link is in his sig). The official thread for it is here. It has all the systems you'll need, and is (relatively) easy to modify. It also comes with sprites of all 493 Pokémon, and quite a lot of trainers.
For other sprites, try *pokemonelite2000 link removed* or The Spriters Resource.

God, no. First you need to experiment a bit, don't start by using someone else's work, in the end it will be more satisfying. Here are a few sites with tutorials:

    RMXP.org

    PhyloMortis.com

Also, RMXP is not the only game maker around. Try Googling for these: Game Maker, RM2k, RM2k3, RMVX, Sphere. And see witch one suits you best. There are some more, I am sure, but these are the ones I am familiar with.

You know, your not technically allowed to link to other forums unless it's in your signature. So you'll have to either PM him it, or change it in your previous post.

[On-topic] If your new to game making, I highly suggest Rpgmaker 2003, xp, or vx. Because they all are pretty fun to use. If you wanna spend more time working hard on them rather than the 30 day free trial, then google Rpgmaker 2003. That's free, unlike XP or VX, and it'll help you grasp the foundations of rpgmaking/game making, until you do bigger and better things.

    Good luck.

I'm also somewhat new to game making, but I've toyed with the RPG Maker programs in the past and am somewhat confident in my ability to manipulate events and such. I could easily make a "choose your starter pokémon" situation, for example.

I want to know how the different programs (RPG Maker <various>, Game Maker, Sphere) compare to each other. Maximum map number, maximum tilesheets, supported resolutions, etc. Also, I want to use poccil's starter kit (but I will learn how to modify it as I progress through making the game), so compatibility with that would be preferable.

I've done enough in Game Maker to tell you it's one of the better for making a variety of games, and it only costs $20 to register. Yeah, RPG Maker is good for Pokemon games, but all it can make is RPGs, and even then it can be quite limited.

But if it's pro-grade software you're looking for, I'd suggest anything that runs in C++. That's what the pros use, and I know for a fact because I happen to be close friends with a professional game programmer. I can give you a reference, if you'd like.
