Charm and child-like wonder vs quality, I'd say.
Pokemon's a safe franchise that stays safe with it's ideas and identity, but as a "Nintendo Fan" and as a gamer in general, I think in terms of design, evolution (of the series, not the Pokemon), and concepts, Pokemon isn't particularly that good of a series, and while I can understand someone jumping into the series and clinging to it, being a fan for six generations gives you time to pinpoint the things you don't like or why you aren't having fun anymore.
And it certainly isn't because of that timeframe, either. Been a fan of Dynasty Warriors since 2 and I still have some grand old fun with the series. Heck, it's gotten so bad that I enjoyed XY more than any main Pokemon games in over a decade just because they decided to dip their toes in the pool a little.
With Mario and Zelda, sure they play it safe, but they also have designers that almost never make the same game twice and play with ideas as they please (which is why we get such divisive/unique titles such as Wind Waker, Majora's Mask- which was mostly made with OoT's assets and still managed to be an outstanding title do to tight, cohesive concepts and design-, and Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy). With Pokemon, I often see the argument "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but I think Nintendo's First Party titles in the modern age can often be a testament to how playing safe =/= playing the previous game in the series but also not. This is why I never really get tired of Mario or Zelda games simply because they're Mario or Zelda games, and why they have that staying power. When you really look at that contrast, in can certainly enjoyment of what one franchise's idea of safe is.
