Nintendo's Tomodachi Life and gay marriage

Actually, visibility is LGBT right's greatest ally - so it's actually very important to have representation in media, including video games. I don't know what family values Nintendo chooses to have, but with their public apology, I doubt they care about seeming "safe" to the right-wing crowd.
It's not a particularly well-known video game, either. It was kind of a dud. Keep in mind, too, that for some other games, it wouldn't make sense to put in homosexual relations. It's not something you should have to force in for the sake of having it.

As for catering to right-wing family values folk, that's what they've always done. They can apologize, but I'd be surprised if you saw any actual changes. They'll probably just skirt around the issue in the future somehow.

Certainly a good discussion/debate topic. But it fits the Video Games section more, so I've moved this on in here. Besides, Video Games need more in-depth discussions ;]

There was that supposedly transgendered trainer in Pokémon XY. Also, Birdo. It's not beyond the realm of imagination for this to be possible in a future Tomodachi Life game.

And all the "family values" stuff applies more to Nintendo of America, than it does Japan as NoA had the history of modifying game content from the original Japanese versions. And this game and it's bug fix originated in Japan.

Just don't play the game. If it offends you, stay away from it. It's like that guy who sued a dating website because it didn't offer gay couples or however it works. It's like me sueing a grocery store because they don't have my favorite peanut butter brand. They created the game how they like it... And they should keep it that way.

Well, considering it's a dating simulator, it was a pretty bad move by them. There are games such as The Sims which have allowed homosexual relationships since always. I don't like it because it restrains the player. Mass Effect is a huge hit and allows homosexual relationships.

This prejudice will only end when people realize there's nothing "sacred" about marriage at all. It's first and foremost a contract.

It's not really a dating simulator necessarily. It's a purposely goofy, quirky game to put your Mii is funny situations.

Oh, I haven't really read anything about it, but I still think it's a bad move to exclude homosexual relationships anyway.

Did they give any official explanation? It would be hard for them to justify that in this day and age without sounding like bigots.

They did, Oryx explained it in her post. The homosexual relationhships were originally glitches in the original Japanese version, which crashes the game. They made a patch to fix the glitch.

"Play another video game" what a wonderful, completely non-expected, straight person reply to a serious issue.
