Garzey's Wing was a masterpiece though, not sure why I scored it so low.
 
It's easy getting a low average scores for pre-2000s. Just watch OVAs. Majority of old school OVA are 1-5/10, with lower scored ones being better, like Violence Jack, Apocalypse Zero, Psychic Wars, Dark Myth, Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gotaman, Crying Freeman (the manga is legit good, with some of the best art manga has ever seen), Genocyber etc. Although I kinda like Butt Attack because it was really hilarious.
 
If we're talking about post 2000s shows, then yeah, I got lots of them in the 1-5/10 section. Gundam Wing and Dragon Ball GT are the only TV series from pre-2000s I ended up rating lower. But then again, I'm mostly selective when it comes to old stuff, while I watch everything my group drags me into with new stuff.

Escaflowne is from the 90s, and I wouldn't really call the 90s a decade of mech shows. Maybe decade of fantasy? Mecha was way more popular back in the 70s and 80s, 70s with Super Robots and 80s with Real Robots.
 
To the western world mecha was pretty prominent in the 90s. Gundam Wing, G Gundam, NGE and Esceflowne. There were also things like Samurai Pizza Cats.

Of course you are right in saying the 70s and 80s were the peak of mecha shows, they were the equivalent of cute girls doing cute things nowadays.

Yeah, it did seem that way. A lot of the dubbed/subbed shows then were Mecha...actually even back in the 80's the dubbed shows were mechs. :o

Also not enough pandering of the opposite gender.
 
Yeah, it did take a while for shoujo stuff to get to the English speaking west. I think that was in the 90s with shows like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors and Utena. Of course Attack No. 1 aired in France, Germany and some other places. Of course there were plenty of things airing in the west with strong female dual-leads like Galaxy Express 999, so isn't that bad.
 
Europe used to air lots of good stuff back in the day. The already mentioned Attack No. 1 (Or Mila Superstar), Captain Tsubasa, Rose of Versailles, almost all WMT shows (would have been weird not airing them) like Akage no Anne, Heidi and Romeo's Blue Sky etc.

There's always that question, what was your first anime, when did you start watching etc. I was pretty much exposed to anime from the time I started watching TV. Of course, I only learned that it was anime when I was like 8-9 year old, but I still had trouble telling them apart. Like, how the heck was I supposed to know that Heidi, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio and Peter Pan were anime? I always thought that anime was more like Ranma 1/2, Dragon Ball, Digimon, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne etc (because the block was marketed as anime block). And then you find out that even Moomin, Alfred Kwak and Calimero are anime.

By the time Narutu aired I could already tell how bad it is, so I didn't even bother watching it until way later when I switched to subbed. Ironically, that period when Narutu started airing, the whole anime block started falling apart. And of course, censoring got worse and unwatchable. Maybe even worse than 4kids. Like, they weren't allowed to say the word kill or die, so Itachi defeated his clan, and Sasuke wants to win against Itachi. Censoring the word kill and die was always stupid and underestimating children.

Good old days, when they even aired hentai on TV (still remember my first one, Dragon Knight 4ever, didn't know what I was in for, but I was already familiar with Aika, Najica and Golden Boy, so I was a big boy to watch that odd cartoon that airs after midnight!).

Sadly the glorious days of 90s and early 2000s are long gone, and anime is pretty much dying here and is replaced with stuff like Ben 10. Or who cares about Heartcatch Precure (which aired for a short while), lets replace it with endless Winx reruns!
 
Sadly they didn't air many of those in this part of Yurop. The rise of fansubbing and p2p surely makes up for the fact that the TV golden age has passed.

I was so happy when I saw that [Live-eviL] had picked up Attack No.1. Can't wait to watch it when they've finished subbing in 2046.
 
Germany used to air quite a lot of anime. France probably too, with Saint Seiya being popular as ♥♥♥♥. Italy was probably the best place for 70s Tatsunoko and mecha shows. Sadly every country focused on different things, with Germany airing everything they could get their hands on. Most bizarre one being Chibi Maruko-chan.

It wasn't that popular in my country (but thankfully I could watch German channels that were full with anime). Like we did air stuff like Dragon Ball, Shaman King, Tokyo Mew Mew, Digimon, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, but they were never popular enough to get a block on a channel. And even when we got a kids channel that focused on anime, they were slowly replaced with stuff like Winx, Ben 10, and even reality shows like that wife swapping thing.
 
A lot of anime aired over here in India around 2000. Dbz, pokemon, CCS, Zorro anime, cinderella anime, fushigi yuugi and a few others whose names I forget. During 2004-6 I think animax came and tons of anime started airing. Then my cable provider took it off and I didn't watch anime till 2010. The year I came to know I can watch stuff online lel.

Also, the only anime channel in India, animax, is gonna be removed in favor of some edgy ♥♥♥♥ i dont give a ♥♥♥♥ about. I'm pretty sad. But screw tv. Its days are long gone.
 
We do get films on from time to time. There was a Ghibli marathon on Film 4 around the turn of the year. Also saw the live action Battle Royale film on again the other night, was the film that got me into this.
