Most people here have, you would have thought.

I can agree that as high as 90% of anime, by the end of the day, is garbage.

Those rare gems

Because 90% of anime isn't garbage, most anime fans just watch shit.

The difference being that good anime isn't rare or hard to find, it can just get obscured by various pieces of popular trash.

While you enjoy SAO?
Are you referring to the thing in my signature, Sword Art Online: Sanctuary? That's a roleplay, but even in that thread (and various others, including this one) I've been pretty clear about my feelings for the series. It makes sense that, since I'm a co-GM of the roleplay, I likely enjoy the series, but I don't.

That's pretty much all there is to it. There have been popular roleplays based off other series that people join without having been involved with them even once, and they enjoy themselves. It's all about the roleplay's presentation, concepts, execution, and what the players do with it that make it truly fun, regardless of the series.

I've mostly been watching rom-com/slice of life stuff the last month or so (though I've forgotten to put some of it on my list). Hence my part in the garbage jokes.

I think it's interesting how the shows we Western people call the best, the most refined, the most classy, etc. often are among the most West (American)-inspired stuff out there. Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, Monster, and so on.
I wonder to what extent this praise comes from their de facto achievements and how much unconsciously or at least unintentionally comes from a preference to things we are familiar with.
Or perhaps the shows pulling inspiration from Western media have the upper hand since American pop culture has had more diversity and room to evolve.

I think the western-inspired anime succeed more because they take the strengths of both Japanese anime and western cartoons and fuse them together to create something wonderful. Them's my two cents; let the count-up continue!

That's certainly a point to consider.

In some cases I just wonder what some of these shows being anime really add in comparison to them being regular live-action TV-shows.

There is plenty of western inspired garbage out there too. Those series do just happen to be decent.

It depends on the series, really. Those specific anime (Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, and Monster) are considered good gateway anime because they don't have nearly as many anime tropes or cliches as others, and more, they don't rely on them, especially in the way of visual gags or exaggeration. As a non-fan would put it, they're a lot less "weird" than others. It's part of the same reason Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli and Satoshi Kon movies, which are very Japanese, do so well. It's not the full reason, but it keeps them from feeling visually tired and less predictable.
