I can agree that as high as 90% of anime, by the end of the day, is garbage.
Those rare gems
Are you referring to the thing in my signature, Sword Art Online: Sanctuary? That's a roleplay, but even in that thread (and various others, including this one) I've been pretty clear about my feelings for the series. It makes sense that, since I'm a co-GM of the roleplay, I likely enjoy the series, but I don't.120
While you enjoy SAO?

I think the western-inspired anime succeed more because they take the strengths of both Japanese anime and western cartoons and fuse them together to create something wonderful. Them's my two cents; let the count-up continue!
I think it's interesting how the shows we Western people call the best, the most refined, the most classy, etc. often are among the most West (American)-inspired stuff out there. Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, Monster, and so on.
It depends on the series, really. Those specific anime (Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, and Monster) are considered good gateway anime because they don't have nearly as many anime tropes or cliches as others, and more, they don't rely on them, especially in the way of visual gags or exaggeration. As a non-fan would put it, they're a lot less "weird" than others. It's part of the same reason Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli and Satoshi Kon movies, which are very Japanese, do so well. It's not the full reason, but it keeps them from feeling visually tired and less predictable.130.
