3rd Gen Pick up Voltorb, or stick with Pikachu?

Which of the two do you prefer to use, Voltorb or Pikachu? I am working on a romhack aimed at making Firered/Leafgreen more enjoyable, so I'm sort of interested in how this particular aspect of the game needs to be improved.

Personally, I reason that 1) Pikachu, while weak, has Thunderbolt, while Voltorb only has Spark, and 2) if I'm going to buy a Thunderbolt at the game Corner, I may as well use it on a Jolteon.

I know the majority will vote for Pikachu but I'm more for Voltorb, I don't know why there's just something about it.

I've never used either, except Voltorb for a Nuzlocke. It's alright, and I don't really like Pikachu to begin with. However, Pikachu is a lot more popular so you might want to take that into consideration, but Voltorb/Electrode has insane speed and nifty Special Attack so I find them more useful.

Pikachu is horrible. I'd stick with Voltorb, as I've done for several Leaf Green runs. For others, I've actually held out for Eevee, then bought a Thunderstone and evolved it into Jolteon.

Even in Yellow I ditched Pikachu as soon as Voltorb became available. And you just don't say no to an angry ball that can go kaboom.
