3rd Gen Pickup Question

I was wondering how it works.. I had 2 Zigs in my team, and i fought alot but never got anything, do I need to use them in battle to get items, or just have them on the team?

Every time you finish a battle, each of the Pok?mon that have pickup on your team has a chance of obtaining an item.

Ok, so, I'v I'm leveling my torchik up, and I have 3 ziggzoons in my team, after each battle, they have a chance of geting an item, no matter if they were brought out or not?
