Plain Dumb!

Actually, recalling what Ash has released in the past and the really powerful Pokemon he could have had, this is the team I'd be traveling around with if I were him:

Charizard
Sceptile
Raichu :D
Tyranitar (from the aforementioned Larvitar he hatched, note that since he hatched it, he had every right to keep it)
Snorlax
Gengar (could have evolved from the Haunter he befriended at Pokemon Tower, assuming it would eventually learn to obey him)

Anyway...

why doesnt he release Pikachu? [Considering that is probably one of his worst pokemon even if his is uber]

Pikachu is the mascot for Pokemon so it wouldn't be dropped.

Plus it is Ash's starter pokemon.

Another dumb thing is the fact that side characters like Brock and Tracey never get (got in traceys case) watching Ash/Misty/May/Max/Dawn hog all of the limelight and have are the good adventures.

Here is my opinion on it-

Sure, it is seemingly foolish that he doesn't keep the stronger ones. But, that is what makes him a true trainer. Anyone can win with strong Pokemon. Winning the match in a 1-2-3- HA HA YOUR DEFEATED is wasteful, and we all know how Ash likes to have a good battle with the opponent.
Through grueling turn backs from his opponents in battle, both getting the edge on each other is what Pokemon battling is all about- Not slicing and dicing Roark's team with Leaf Blade in three shots.

Something that annoys me about ash is that he favors Pikachu over all his other Pokémon. An example of this is in the Steamboat Willies episode where all his pokémon are trapped on a boat heading towards a waterfall. Ash is speechless and all he could say is: "Pikachu !". This has happened many times before and I think he should worry about all his pokémon equally, no matter which one he favors most.

It would be nice if Ash was to ask Oak about his old pokémon the next time he calls him. If he truly cares about his former partners.

Ash mentions Misty in the DP episodes, yet he doesn't seem to remember May :D:D.

What the series lacks is character development, Ash seems to have memory problems when it comes to Pokémon and battles... that shouldn't happen, he should learn from his experiences, not forget them and go through the same things over and over again.

And why is Brock still with Ash? He's practically useless, except for the cooking thing and the useless remarks : "Pikachu is an electric type, it's strong against water type Pokémon." Is he for real? You'd think we'd know this by now?

Ash memory problem? Simple. While it may bother us long-time watchers of the anime, those who only recently watched Pokémon (right from D/P) would have absolutely no clue. Possibly the writers, not intending to leave their viewers confused and clueless, try their hardest to not make too many past references.

I find it odd that he released some Pokémon, promised to come back for them, and completely forgets this somehow. You all do remember that he also promised some characters that they would meet again, but he never did. XD

Well, guys, Ash is like... Thirteen? Fourteen now? It's as if birthdays don't exist, so I don't know. Anyone think he might just be too young to know EXACTLY what he's doing? If I were him I probably wouldn't know. XD

Also, if Ash were to keep his team and never let anyone go, I think I'd hear the opposite complaints, like, "Ash really needs to get some new Pokemon."
