The first hotfix of Pokémon Brown 20th Anniversary Edition!

We want to thank everyone who submitted bug reports via our form, and a special shoutout to our Discord community! This update includes 22 bug fixes and some other adjustments. We are also working on a small feature update that adds in some things that we didn't have time for in the original release, so look out for that!

In the meantime, instructions on how to update the game and your save file are in the Readme that comes with the game, or below. Please note that this is a different update procedure to Prism!

If you have played a previous version of Pokémon Brown 20th Anniversary Edition, you can use the same save file in the new version. You can also update from Pokémon Brown 2016 (TPP) and 2014, however in this case we do recommend starting a new game.

To update any save file, you must follow the instructions below.

Please ensure to always BACK UP your save file before attempting!

To safely update, you need to either have Fly, Teleport, Dig or an Escape Rope, then:

1. Save at any location where you can use Fly/Teleport/Dig/Escape Rope.
2. Load your save in Brown 20th Anniversary.
3. Graphics will be glitched, don't worry. Use Fly/Teleport/Dig/Escape Rope and after warping, you can continue as normal.

We have also updated our recommendations for emulators on the Steam Deck and iOS, included some advice on playing the game in colour, as well as some advice on what to do if you encounter some common glitches found in 6.0.

strange.

I am NOT encountering this problem at all with the VisualBoyAdvance-M versions that I'm using on my Win10 computer.
tested with VBA-M versions from v2.1.8 up to most recent version (2.1.11) and I do not get this problem. and it also plays perfectly in latest
BGB version on my PC as well

perhaps check carefully your video/display & gb emulator settings from the VBA-M Options menu, Reater Crash.
and reset them to the default by selecting the Factory Reset option from the Help menu. and then make a few adjustments
to either the video or GB emu settings and try again.

It should work. We do recommend mGBA for our GBA games so GB emulations should be fine. Not sure about SGB colours though.

I'm going to spoiler this just in case!

Spoiler:

You can either backtrack through Castro Forest - if you keep going south, you will find a second exit. Or, you can take the City Underpass from Moraga Town to the coast, and either surf east for another badge, or west for more story!

a follow-up on this: I found the root cause of this "glitchy" color problem as I was able to reproduce this problem on my computer and getting the result what Reater Crash had.
it turned out to be an emulator configuration problem in VBA-M when trying to play the game in GBC (gameboy color) mode.


normally in the Game Boy settings menu in VBA-M, I have these GB settings as the "default" - and the Pokemon Brown 20th anniversary game runs correctly with no color glitches:

Playing this new version has brought back a lot of the same feelings I had playing the original all those years ago. It still feels like Brown, but its had a lot of nice updates. I appreciate all the work that you all have done for this new version, and it's honestly helped re-inspire interest in some of my own projects that have been on the back burner. Release: Pokémon Brown 6.1 & Brown Tools 6.1

We're very pleased to announce our first feature update for Pokémon Brown 20th Anniversary Edition: 6.1!

Not to be confused with 6.0.1, a hotfix release we released back in September, this update comes with a few cool new features, including new Move Tutors, multiple quality of life improvements, graphical and map updates, the return of the Old Amber fossil, and a new move: Giga Impact!

We've also included over 20 bugfixes, thanks to the massive help from our community. Thank you so much for reporting! Be sure to join our Discord server or use the Bug Report form to alert us to any problems.

Be sure to check out all the new features in the changelog here, or in the changelog.txt file that's included with the game.

We've also updated Brown Tools, a suite of customised tools that allow you edit your copy of Brown. Be sure to download the latest versions of the tools in order to use with 6.1 on the Pokémon Brown page on our website.

Additionally, the ROM Patcher is now included with the download. This means that even if you are offline, you will be able to patch your file. Thank you again to marcrobledo for making this super easy-to-use tool!

As before, please refer to the Readme file on how to update your save files. An extract is below.

We've been made aware of a bug in Brown 6.1 with the new laptops. There's a chance that changing your boxes while using them could corrupt your save data.

We will issue an update to correct this soon. In the meantime, please avoid using these laptops to change boxes.

All other functions of the laptops, the box changing feature of the start menu and standard PCs are still safe to use.

Always remember to back up you save files!

Following our recent 6.1 release, have a hotfix! This has several important bugfixes, so if you have already updated to 6.1 we recommend you update to 6.1.1 as soon as possible.

This fixes a bug with the new laptop item and issues with the Pokédex. It also includes other tweaks that we didn't have time to include in the 6.1 release.

A little late to the party, but I'd like to echo Luna's sentiments.

In an era where pokemon rom hacks were in their infancy, Brown Version came along and went above and beyond any and all expectations. When Brown first released, I was just a wide-eyed teen browsing for hacks on fansites and forums. This hack blew my mind and placed within me an urge to learn rom hacking that never truly went away.

Now 20 years later I see my own rom hack, Shin Pokemon, in the update notes. Wow... This is really happening. Not only did the first rom hack I fell in love with get an insane update, but my own open-source code that I wrote from my own project contributed to it. I feel like everything has come full circle.

It is an honor and a privilege.

I have a question, though: is it possible to complete the Pokedex in a single playthrough without trading? If not, which Pokemon are missing? Thanks!

Hi all! Really sorry for the late reply to your messages, I've been very busy this past month. >_<

Can anyone tell which red rom I should be downloading to patch the file with? Y'all don't know how badly I'm this close to going insane with how many roms I've downloaded and tried to patch. Am I doing something wrong? I'm using the unipatcher app and trying to play through the OldBoy on Android.

Any standard Pokémon Red US ROM should do, but I'd recommend trying RomPatcher JS and see if that works.

What is pokemon prism integration? This the only part i don't understand

Currently, this means that all the changes we have made to Rijon in Prism in both the past and upcoming versions have been ported back into Brown. Some of the new features in Brown were also co-developed with Prism 0.96, the next release! We have some more news on this, but aren't ready to show it yet. Keep an eye on the Pokémon Prism thread for updates!

It is possible to complete the current Pokédex, and a lot of our players have already! We were so happy to see so many of you do so in such a short time, and are working on some new features specifically for you guys. Stay tuned!
