    Wells, I posted this on SPPf, but since that place laggs so much, I'll post it here for those of you who don't like to go on the great green lagger.

    Rating: PG-13 for violence, mild to medium language, scary sequences, and later some adult situations/themes. Hey, the real world isn't all cute bunnies and rainbows, is it? So discretion is advised for those who don't like explosions, tense situations, dramatic deaths, and a bit of romance.

    Genre: Action, Suspense, some romance, and epic battles. Yep, your Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter sort of genre, only with pokemon. ^^ Also please note, this is an Original Trainer fic, but NOT a journey fic. No gym badges or E4 battles. Just keep that in mind.

    Prologue
    ~*~*~*~*

    It was raining. Gathered around a grave in a small, rundown cemetery was a small congregation of criminals, rich folks, and a few others. Armed police men patrolled the perimeter, ready for any convict to try and escape.

    Among the crowd stood two men, both in their early fifties. The first man had hair the color of fire, bangs brushed to the sides of his face. The second had longer hair, a deep sapphire color, combed straight back, reaching slightly past his shoulders. A few strands of hair hung down to his thin cheeks. Covering the eyes of both men were sunglasses. They had no need for them in the current weather, but they wore them nonetheless. Although the gentle shower stained their faces with water drops, no tears fell from their eyes as they listened to the priest's monotonous speech.

    The man with red hair felt sorrow, yet at the same time felt nothing. His father had not been the greatest roll model. They had always been rich, but his father had always been experimenting in his laboratory, and neglected his two sons. Then, slowly he led them to a life filled with false promises and power they had only dreamed of. Their lives became immersed in a plot, one that would leave them at the top of the world.

    But then, they had been foiled by a man by Wes, a former member of an ally of theirs. They had suffered a great defeat, but behind the scenes, the man's father had worked furiously on a new project. His ultimate masterpiece, XD001. The legendary Lugia was under his control. XD001 was the first stable unpurifiable Pokémon. XD000 had been a failure. It was completely shadowed, but it was unstable and suffered wild changes in health. But XD001 was perfect. Or so they thought. Five years after Wes, a little kid named Michael had wiped out the entire plot. Somehow, the kid had talent in battling and was able to defeat their strongest admins. By the defeat, Eldes had a change of heart. He realized they had been chasing an impossible dream, one that would only result in chaos. He convinced his father to surrender and turn himself in. Greevil had agreed, and Ardos reluctantly gave in as well.

    Here they stood, four years later, at their father's funeral. He had died in prison from cancer, and despite his wrong deeds in the past, he was a kind man in the jail and many inmates and guards grew to enjoy his company. Now, Eldes and Ardos were released on probation.

    As the priest finished, the blue-haired Ardos turned away and walked to a limo. Eldes turned and followed his younger brother to the automobile. Both climbed into the back seat. As they drove away, the man in the passenger seat spoke of their property and who it was to be inherited by. Eldes hadn't paid attention, but instead looked at his brother's eyes through the sunglasses. Eldes recognized the same look that Ardos had, four years ago, when he had been at his prime in the Cipher organization. For the first time in his life, Eldes was truly afraid of his younger brother.

    End prologue. Catch any foreshadowing? hehe...

    Chapter One—Confliction
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A seven year old Jack was sitting alone on a swing, staring at the ground. The rest of the playground was crowded with many young children playing and shouting happily, free of school for a half hour. A few boys walked by the swing, talking to each other.
    "Isn't that the kid from Kanto?" one asked the other.
    "Yeah, He is. I think someone said his dad's American, too."
    "Really?"
    "Yup. Hey kid!" the second by hollered to Jack. "What's your name?"
    "Jack." He mumbled in response.
    "What'd you say? I didn't hear you." asked the boy.
    "Jack." Jack answered again, louder this time.
    "Hello Jack. I'm Ian. This is Max," the second boy said, pointing. "What are you doing?"
    "Nothing," replied Jack, looking at the ground again.
    "That's stupid. Come play soccer with us." Ian offered.
    "No thanks," said Jack.
    "Geez, you're boring. Oh well. See you Amerigo!" Ian turned away, using the common insult for an American. Jack stood up fast and responded in an angry tone.
    "Take it back."
    Ian turned. "What cha gonna do about it, huh, 'Merican?"
    "I said, take it back!" repeated Jack, raising his voice.
    "C'mon, fight me if you're angry!" Ian advanced on Jack and started punching him, knocking him on the ground. The other boy Max stood and watched, cheering for his friend to win.
    Then, another boy came over and pulled Ian off Jack. Ian turned hand tried to push off the new boy, but was promptly thrown to the ground. The new boy turned and offered a hand to Jack, who took it and got up.
    "Thanks," said Jack thankfully.
    "You're welcome. I'm Mike. You?"
    "Jack."
    "Nice to meet you, Jack." Mike smiled. It was a bright smile, one that could light a room and make everyone in it cheerful. Ian got off the ground and slunk away, deprived of any more action. Max followed. Jack and Mike sat down on swings and started to talk, knowing full well that Jack would draw the teacher's attention to himself because of his bruises. But Jack didn't care. He had a friend now; that was all that mattered.
    However, Jack would soon learn that nothing lasts in this life. Even the good things.
    ***********************************************
    Eight Years Later
    ***********************************************
    "Ridiculous! Absolutely ridiculous!" shouted a tall, muscular man. He had blond hair cut military style on a head that rested on a thick neck. His blue eyes glared menacingly at a teenage boy with shaggy brown hair standing opposite of him. At the boy's feet stood a small yellow pokemon with black stripes and two prongs jutting out of its head. The Elekid glanced skeptically from the man to the boy, unsure of what was coming.
    A fourth being was in the small kitchen, sitting at the table. She was an adult, in her late 30's and showing no signs of age. Her long brown hair fell past her shoulders and green eyes looked at the man pleadingly.
    "Elliot, maybe we should let Jack try it. Maybe it will work out." She suggested.
    "No Jessica, I won't allow it. Breeders are soft, overly compassionate people that treat their pokemon as if they're babies. They aren't strong. Jack will do as I say. This is my house, my rules." returned the man fiercely.
    "But Dad, just listen," said the boy named Jack. "Once I leave, I won't be in your house. Besides, it's my life. My career. I can decide for myself what I want to do." The Elekid looked at the father to see what he would say.
    "I will not let nine years at the Pokemon Academy go to waste. I prolonged your journey so you could study for two more years. Tomorrow we will go to New Bark Town and register you as an official Johto Pokemon Trainer, you will choose Totodile, and you will follow in my brother's and my footsteps."
    "I don't want to do what you or Uncle Surge does. I'm thankful that you gave me Static," Jack motioned to the Elekid, "but I really want to be a breeder!" Jack was starting to lose his temper.
    "Breeders have weak pokemon. That's their reputation. I will not let the reputation of the Surge family be lowered from you becoming an incompetent breeder!" spat Mr. Surge.
    "Jack, just listen to your father, please," said Jack's mom soothingly. "Once you've proven to be strong, then he might reconsider."
    Jack was shaking with rage now. They've had this argument many times already, but nothing ever came of it. His fists clenched so his knuckles turned white. "Oh, I'll prove it," Jack answered coldly. "I'll prove that even a breeder can be strong. Just you wait…" And with that, he turned and stomped up the stairs to his bedroom.
    "You get ba—" started Mr. Surge, but Static the Elekid glared at him with intensity unheard of for a pokemon so young. Its fists were crackling with electricity. Mr. Surge knew Static was skilled with Thunder Punch, since the Elekid's father was his own Electabuzz. Mr. Surge threw a look of dislike at the two foot tall pokemon, which Static returned with a smirk. The yellow pokemon then turned and dashed up the stairs to Jack's room.
    At the sound of Static's knocking, Jack opened the door and allowed the little pokemon to sneak in. Static jumped onto the bed and picked up the backpack that was lying open on the pillow.
    <What's this for?> Static asked, bouncing a bit on the mattress.
    "What'dya think?" Jack answered.
    <Heh, you're leaving, aren't you?> Static said, laughter hidden in his voice.
    Now, it may be a bit odd for a pokemon to speak so a human can understand it, but in reality, Poke-speech was just like any other language. Pokemon used different tones and pitches, as well as length of sounds to communicate. Almost like Morse code. After spending nine years studying Poke-speech at Earl's Pokemon Academy in Violet City, Jack was able to understand it easily enough. It was also because of the bond the two shared that they were able to understand each other so well.
    "Yes, I'm leaving. And you're coming too." Static grinned. Jack turned to his dresser and smiled in spite of himself. He knew Static would be supportive. The pokemon was naughty by nature, so Jack was sure he would like the rebellion. Also, Static's smile looked very comical.
    <What about your friends?> questioned Static.
    "What friends?" Jack replied dryly. "Mike moved to Hoenn a year ago and everyone at school thinks I'm weird because Dad teaches there. You know that."
    <I guess I did. Well then, this won't be too hard.> Static grinned.
    Jack nodded and took some clothes out of his dresser, folded them, and stuck them in his backpack. Unlike most people his age, Jack was neater than average. His room usually stayed clean and all his clothes were folded or on hangers. For the next fifteen minutes Jack packed the bag with money, toothbrush, and everything he would need for a long trip, all the while listening to his parents arguing downstairs and Static bouncing on his bed. The last thing he packed was Static's pokeball, a special Luxury Ball with a lightning bolt sticker on the front.
    After zipping up the pack, Jack placed it at the foot of his bed and laid out the clothes he would wear the next day. Finally packed, Jack turned on his radio and tuned it into the Lucky Number Show.
    <I'll play you in chess,> challenged Static, who had taken the game out of the closet. He held it up to Jack. <Do you want to lose like you did last time?>
    "I told you, that match didn't count. You messed with the board while I was in the bathroom."
    <Whatever. Are you going to play or not?> asked Static.
    "Alright. I'll win though."
    They sat on the ground and set the board out with the pokemon shaped pieces. Static, who was white, moved first. Jack knew what the Elekid was planning. The five turn checkmate. Not working on me, thought Jack, and made his move.
    Nearly half an hour later, the game was coming to a close. Jack had his King, Queen, and a Rook. Static had his King, a Bishop, and a Knight. With his favorite strategy, Jack cornered Static's king with his Queen and Rook, checkmating him.
    "I win," said Jack. Static scanned the board for any moves that would work, than scowled and knocked his king over.
    "Nice match," Jack said, reaching to shake Static's hand. The Elekid reluctantly shook it, then sent a jolt of electricity up Jack's arm.
    "Ahh!" exclaimed Jack, quickly withdrawing his hand. The two looked at each other, then burst out laughing.
    They were interrupted by a knock on the door.
    "Jack?" called the boy's mom. "Can I come in?" Jack leapt to his feet and grabbed the backpack off the floor. As quickly and as quietly as he could, he stashed the pack into his closet. At the same time, Static took the folded clothes off his bed and placed them under the bed. Cleared of evidence, Jack cracked open his door to look at his mom.
    "Can I help you?" he asked, not unkindly.
    "Jack, can we talk, please?" she asked it with such kindness that Jack couldn't refuse.
    "Fine," he sighed and let his mother into the room. They sat on his bed and Static joined them at Jack's side.
    "You know your father didn't mean—" started Mrs. Surge, but Jack cut her off, getting to his feet.
    "Don't even start Mom. He meant every damn word he said," Jack looked down at Static, who had fallen off the bed when Jack had stood up.
    "Please don't swear, honey. I really don't want to punish you." Jack almost said something sarcastic, but thought against it. It would only make things worse.
    "He just wants to make you a good trainer. That's all." Jack remained silent. "I think being a breeder is a fine career, though."
    When Jack didn't respond again, his mother stood up and walked to the door. She turned and said,
    "You have a gift, Jack." She nodded at Static who was standing at Jack's feet. "Your care of Static has proven how good you are with pokemon. Don't waste your life listening to your father. Follow his instructions as loosely as possible. He won't know what you are doing on the road. Become a breeder then, it is what you are meant to do. In time, your father will accept that." Her eyes stared at the wall above Jack's head, as if looking into the distance. She blinked twice, and then turned to leave. "Goodnight, Jack."
    "'Night, Mom."
    Jack sighed, and then threw himself onto his bed, arms spread out across the comforter and eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. Static climbed onto the bed and snuggled up against Jack. His warm yellow fur felt soft and Jack scratched the pokemon's prongs absentmindedly.
    "Tomorrow, our journey starts," said Jack.
    <Ooooh yeah!> said Static enthusiastically. Jack grinned. Static's company would be well appreciated on the road. His mischievous attitude and confidence would make the journey fun.
    Soon after they discussed about what they would do first, Jack and Static got ready for bed. It was only 8:30, but Jack planned on leaving before dawn. When he was in his pajamas with only the bed lamp on, Jack set his alarm for 4:00 AM. Groaning to himself, he switched off the bed lamp. Static lay by his side, already asleep. Jack closed his eyes and tried to imagine himself as a breeder. Kanto was his first destination. His home region. After a few more minutes, Jack joined Static in dreamland.
    End chapter one.
    How'd ya like that?
    Chapter Two— Escape From Home
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-bleep-THUNK.

    "Stupid alarm clock…" Jack groaned and massaged his hand that had just smashed the snooze button on the clock.

    <Come on Jack! Wake up!>

    "It's too early to get up now…"

    <But we have to leave! Get up Jack!> Static was saying. The Elekid bounced on the bed, then belly-flopped on top of Jack.

    "Mph! Static, cut it out…"

    <WAKE UP SLEEPYHEAD!>

    ZZZT.

    "Yahhh! What the hell was that!?" Jack had jumped out of bed and landed on the floor with bed sheets tangled around him. He looked at Static to see the Pokémon's hand quietly crackling with electricity.

    <I told you to get up. We're leaving here, remember?> replied Static, bouncing over to the bedlam and switching it on.

    Jack squinted his eyes at the light; the sun hadn't risen yet.

    "Oh yeah, I forgot we were leaving." Jack answered. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and stood up.

    <I told you that, before I jumped on you.>

    "Right…" Jack mumbled, then tossed the sheets on the bed. "Let's get ready."

    Jack walked over to where he had set his clothes the night before and pulled them on. Jeans, T-shirt, and a hooded jacket. He picked up his bag and set it by the door, then proceeded to the bathroom. Cool water splashed in his face and then came splatting onto his hair. When his head looked like it had just been submerged in water, Jack shook is shaggy hair violently, spraying the entire bathroom with droplets of water.

    <I still don't know why you do that.> said Static, walking into the bathroom and staring at Jack.

    "Did you make the bed yet?" Jack asked, turning to face the two foot tall Pokémon that was staring at him.

    <Nope.>

    "Why not?"

    <Um… I'll go do that then.> Static replied, obviously without an answer as to why he hadn't done it yet.

    Jack dried his hair with a towel, shook it again so it hung down in a messy way, than swept his bangs across his face. He turned to see Static struggling to pull the sheets into place, grumbling about a 'lazy master.'

    "Here, let me finish," offered Jack, taking the sheets from the Elekid and tucking them into place. Static jumped off the bed and landed softly on the ground, then walked over to Jack's bag.

    Jack finished making the bed, then scanned the room for any last minute things he would need. When he decided he had everything, he picked up his bag and cracked open the door. Slowly, Jack stuck his head out and looked down the hallway before opening it up all the way. He tip-toed out of the room and Static followed, electricity glowing from his hand as a light and closing the door behind him. The two crept to the stairs, where they made sure to avoid the creaking spots. Static jumped the last three steps, landed with a small 'thump' and froze, listening for noise. Jack did his best to stay quiet, but his ankle cracked as he took a step, and Static jumped behind a door for cover, then hissed at Jack when he realized it was his ankle.

    <Why does your ankle do that?> whispered Static loudly, and Jack shrugged.

    "It's just the way it is," he whispered back, then proceeded into the kitchen.
    When he reached the pantry, he slowly opened it and withdrew four bottles of water, a stack of saltine crackers, three cans of poke food, and a bag of trail mix. He stuck them all in his bag, which was now bulging at the seams.
    Swallowing, Jack found a piece of paper and a pen, which he used to write a brief note to his parents about what he was doing. This note was then stuck to the refrigerator with a magnet. Jack was about to turn around when he heard a creaking sound coming from the ceiling.

    "Crap, Mom and Dad are awake!" Jack hissed to Static, who extinguished his electric fist. The two crouched low behind the kitchen island, listening carefully for the parents. About two minutes later, they heard a toilet flush, then more creaking, then silence. Jack let out a sigh of relief.

    "They only needed to use the bathroom."

    <Yeah, that was close,> Static said, relighting his hand.

    <Very close, if I may say so.> another voice said, and both Jack and Static jumped at the voice.

    "T-Totem?" Jack asked, still recovering from the shock.

    <Yes, it is I.> The Xatu answered, speaking with a slow, nearly emotionless voice.

    "Listen, Totem, please, don't tell Mom about what we're doing." Jack pleaded.

    <I will not give away your plans, although I know already what they are. My master will not know of them.> replied Totem, turning away and floating to the living room using psychic power.

    <Totem still gives me the creeps, even though your mother has had him ever since I was born.> said Static, eying the Xatu until it was out of sight.

    Slowly, the two crept to the front door, which they opened up. Cool May air blew in, bringing the smell of Mrs. Surge's flower garden with it. Jack inhaled deeply.

    "Alright, here we go." He stepped out onto the porch, then walked down the front steps. Static followed, once again closing the door behind him.

    As they walked down the driveway of their suburban home, the sun was beginning to rise.

    "I can't remember when the last time I've seen a sunrise was," Jack said, in awe of the sight in the sky.

    <It is beautiful, isn't it? Too bad you always sleep in late and never see them.>

    Jack nodded in agreement, and the two walked on the sidewalk towards the closest bus stop.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The bus pulled up and the door opened, letting a few people out. Jack and Static walked in, paid the driver the money, then proceeded to the back of the bus. They found a seat in the second to last row, which they sat down in. The bus doors closed, then with a small jerk it drove off, heading south towards Cherrygrove, a small port town with ferries to Kanto. The city was about two hours away by bus ride, so the two made themselves comfortable.
    <So what is the plan once we reach Cherrygrove?> asked Static.
    "We'll catch a ferry to Pallet, and then go from there." Jack said, looking out the window at passing trees. He thought he saw a Pidgeot nest, but it might have just been an odd branch.
    <But when we're in Kanto, what are we doing? Are you going to challenge the gyms? If they're as easy as Falkner is, we could rule!>
    Jack didn't respond for a while, thinking about his battle with Violet City's Gym Leader, Falkner. He had beaten him only a month ago, and the twenty-three year old leader secretly gave him a badge, even though he wasn't a licensed trainer and the match hadn't been official. He had used Static to take down both Falkner's Pidgey and Pidgeotto. The match was very intense, as Static didn't have much experience in Pokémon battles, so for the first half he acted like a ninja in a cartoon show, trying to pull off ridiculous stunts and dodges, usually ending with him getting a face full of Mud Slap. Pidgey went down easily with a Thunder Punch, but Pidgeotto was a bit harder. Jack had to make Static use Ice Punch, a move his father explained as an egg move, or a move passed from father Pokémon to their offspring. Static's father Charge had been born with the attack and had passed it on to Static.
    Falkner had not expected the attack and hesitated in giving Pidgeotto directions, but it was too late. Static followed Ice Punch with a Thunder Punch, knocking the bird Pokémon unconscious. Falkner had been amazed at how well Static performed and remarked how the Elekid could do well in the Pokémon League Gyms. Jack had just shrugged at this. He had to look away when the Pidgeotto had been finished by the Thunder Punch, even though he was the one who ordered it. He wasn't sure if he liked Gyms, or even Pokémon battles.
    <Jack?>
    "Yeah, uh, I don't think that they will all be as easy as Falkner was. For one, Brock's Pokémon are resistant to electricity, and he's the first Gym Leader…"
    <Hmmm. Well, you are going to get your license thing, right?>
    "Yeah, I'll need that to buy poke balls. You aren't allowed to purchase poke balls unless you are a registered trainer, and I don't think we can prove Dad wrong with only you, even if you are strong."
    <But if you get that license, don't you get a starting Pokémon?>
    "Yeah…"
    <Then who are you going to pick as a starter?> Static asked, looking up at Jack, who was still starring out the window.
    "I'm not sure. They give away Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, but I haven't decided."
    <Okay.> said Static, apparently satisfied with Jack's answer.
    "We'll go see Uncle Surge in Vermillion for sure though," said Jack, turning to look at his Pokémon. "I'm glad you're with me Static." He scratched the Elekid's prongs, and Static closed his eyes and fell asleep against Jack.
    Carefully as to not wake Static, Jack reached into his backpack and took out his iPod and turned it on. He put the buds in his ears and listened to some songs.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Two hours and forty songs later, the bus was slowed down and halted at a bus stop, and the doors slid open. Jack put his iPod away and gently woke Static.

    "We're here Static." The Elekid opened his eyes, and then hopped off his seat. He tried walking out into the walkway, but it was being crowded by other passengers getting off. Jack put his backpack on, then lifted Static up onto his shoulders.

    "They can't see you since you're so short," explained Jack. Static looked around at the others on the bus, now viewing them from a tall vantage point.

    <It's nice to look down from this height.>

    Jack gave a slight nod, then proceeded down the walkway and off the bus. Once on the sidewalk, Jack let Static down and began to walk away when someone stopped him. It was a young woman, about thirty or so, with reddish-brown hair and curved glasses. She wore a dress that ended at he knees, and her stomach was bulging a bit, but not with fat. She seemed familiar, but Jack couldn't quite place her.

    "Are you a Pokémon trainer?" she asked. Her voice was a bit bossy.

    "Um, no ma'am. I'm going to Kanto to get my license." Jack replied, his face a bit blushed.

    "You seem older than 13. May I ask why you waited?" the woman asked.

    "Yeah, see, my Dad made me study for two more years at school, and he teaches there, and well, he wanted me to be more prepared." What a lame excuse, Jack thought.

    "I see. You wouldn't happen to be the son of Jessica Surge, would you?" The lady stood up straight and looked at him.

    "H-how did you know?" Jack stuttered.

    "You look like your mom, and I heard she married a teacher named Elliot Surge, brother of Erik Surge, the Gym Leader of Vermillion. I'm Lorelei, first member of the Kanto Elite Four, famous Water and Ice Pokémon Trainer, and collector of Pokémon plushies. Also the wife of Lance, former Kanto Champion, now leader of the Kanto Elite Four and Dragon master." She blushed a bit when she mentioned Lance, but retained a pose of authority.

    Jack stared a bit in shock, then quickly recovered and asked,

    "But what are you doing here ma'am? Isn't the Annual Pokémon League tournament in two weeks? Shouldn't you be training?"

    Lorelei shook her head in a pretend sad expression.

    "Haven't you heard? I'm not competing this time. The baby's due in a little more than a month, and I can't handle the stress of the tournament, it wouldn't be healthy for him." She rubbed her belly protectively. "Oh, please don't call me ma'am. It is a bit annoying."

    "What? You mean you're…"

    "Pregnant? Obviously." Lorelei responded, a hint of bossiness in her voice. "Anyway, I must be going now, goodbye…?"

    "Oh, Jack. My name's Jack."

    "Yes. Goodbye Jack!" Lorelei waved, and then walked away.

    Static had been staring at Lorelei the entire time. He turned to Jack, whose cheeks were still a bit red.

    <You like her?> Static asked.

    "Whaat?! Come on Static, you know that she's married. And she's like, twice my age!"

    This attracted a few stares, as most people didn't understand Poke speech, so Jack looked like he was talking to himself. Ignoring the people, Jack walked off in the direction of the port, where he would find a boat to ride on. Static tried to keep up the best he could, but eventually jumped up onto Jack and sat on his shoulders.

    <How did she know you're mother?> asked Static.

    "Apparently, they were friends in childhood. My mom grew up on Four Island, but she moved to Johto to become a Pokémon trainer. They kept in touch, but my mom settled down in Violet and opened a flower shop, while Lorelei continued as a trainer."

    <I guess that makes sense.>

    Jack continued down the sidewalk until he found the large Pokémon Center
    ahead. He walked up to the doors and peered inside.

    <I'm fine, Jack, I don't need to go here.> Static assured Jack.

    "That isn't why I'm here." The doors slid open and Jack walked inside. "I need to find a map of this town."

    <Riiiiight.> Static said. <You can let me down now.>

    Jack lifted Static off his shoulders and set him on the ground. He stopped a passing trainer and asked,

    "Excuse me; is there a town map around here?"

    "Yeah, it's over that way, by the front desk." the trainer answered, then walked away.

    "Thank you." Jack sauntered over to the map, trying to look like he belonged there. A small dot on the town map said, "You are here." Jack traced with his finger the direction they had to go to get to the docks, then turned.

    "I think I have it. Let's go Static, the boats are waiting."

    They walked out of the Pokémon Center and headed in the direction of the docks. Jack checked his watch. It was about 9:15, and already he was hungry.

    "Do you need something to eat Static?"

    <Yeah, I am a bit hungry.>

    "When we get to the docks we'll eat something."

    They did get to the docks eventually, but after Jack took a wrong turn, their arrival was delayed about twenty minutes. Jack scanned the ferry times and
    saw that they had missed one by ten minutes.

    "Dang, the next boat doesn't leave until noon."

    But Static wasn't listening. He was trying to jump up and unzip Jack's bag to get food.

    "I thought you said you were only a bit hungry, not starving." Jack commented as he sat on a bench and opened his bag.

    <When you asked me, I was only a bit starving. But since you got lost, I became hungrier.>

    Jack pulled out a can of poke food and the saltine crackers. He tossed the can to Static, who opened it with a claw and viciously consumed the entire contents of the can. His mouth was covered in remnants of the brown poke food, but was rubbed off by Static's forearm. Meanwhile, Jack had opened the saltine crackers and began to eat them.

    <Can I have some water?> asked Static, who then got a water bottle tossed at him. Using his claws, he ripped off the top and chugged the water until it was all gone. Jack hadn't been watching, so when Static threw the empty bottle at his head, he was a bit surprised.

    "What the heck, Static?!" Jack scolded, picking up the plastic bottle and tossing it in a nearby trash can. "Now you only have one bottle of water until we get to a store in Pallet."

    <So?> replied Static, who then gave a big belch. A few passerbies glanced at Jack and scoffed, as if to say, "What a poor Pokémon trainer."

    "Static, cut it out! People are staring!" hissed Jack. Static turned around and started waving at people as they passed. This only earned more stares, and people began to walk as far away from Static as they could.

    "Grr… Alright. Back to your poke ball," said Jack, who took off the luxury ball clipped to his belt.

    <Gah! No no, I'll behave! Promise!> yelped Static, jumping away from the poke ball. Jack put the ball back and folded his arms.

    Static slowly walked over to the bench and jumped up to sit on it. His head, or that is, the head part of his body drooped as he swung his legs that where hanging from the bench. Jack stared at the pitiful looking Pokémon, then gave in.

    "Static, do you want to train while we're waiting? You'll have to be stronger to take on gyms."

    Static's eyes lit up at this. He faced Jack and said,

    <Really? So you want to fight in gyms?>

    "It's what you want, right? If we take it slow, I can be a normal breeder and you can fight in gyms."

    <Alright! Thank you Jack!> Static jumped up and hugged Jack, again much to the displeasure of passerby, but this time Jack didn't notice. Static let go and leapt to the ground where he began swinging his arms in circles. Jack knew why Static was doing this; Elekids built up electricity by swinging their arms. After Static had swung his arms enough, he held out his palm and concentrated electricity into it as if to use Thunder Punch. However, Static didn't release the electricity, he just kept it there.

    "What exactly are you doing?" asked Jack. He had never seen Static do this before.

    <I'm practicing electricity control. I have to keep the charge here for as long as I can without releasing it,> muttered Static, not turning away from his hand.

    This continued for the remainder of the wait time. Little by little, Static's time that he could hold the charge increased, and by the end of the wait time he could hold it for two and a half minutes. When the ferry let down its boarding ramp, Jack and Static walked up it and found a seat in the back. Jack took off his pack and turned to Static.

    "Do you want to try Ice Punch now?" he asked.

    <Mmmm. That's a bit harder.> Static answered, then held out his hand. <But nothing is too hard for me!> His hand began to glow with a bluish-white light that gave off wisps of cold air. The ice energy faded after ten seconds.

    "That's good, try again," said Jack encouragingly.

    Static nodded and concentrated harder.

    Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh……… went the ice energy, then faded again.

    The boat began to get a few more passengers. Ten minutes after Jack and Static had boarded, the captain walked on. He was a man in his late twenties, with dark hair and an unshaven face. A white sailor coat was tossed over black clothes. As he turned to face the passengers, he slapped a gray cap embroidered with a red 'R' onto his head.

    "Alright, listen up," he said in a gruff voice. "This boat will be departing within the next five minutes for Pallet Town. After we stop there, we will head for Vermillion, then return to Pallet and back here again. Buoyancy compensators are located beneath your seat. Exits are here, here, and there." He pointed to the front right, middle left and very back as he spoke. "Any questions?"

    A boy towards the front raised his hand and asked,

    "What is a boincy compens…ter thing?"

    "It's a fancy name for a life jacket, kid. Anyone else?" the captain asked.
    When no one else had to ask anything, he said, "It's a three and a half hour trip to Pallet. Best make yourselves comfortable."

    Jack sighed at how long the trip would take, then looked at Static who was
    still working on his Ice Punch. Jack grinned. Static's determination would make him a strong companion.

    Suddenly, all sound was blocked out and everything around Jack seemed to be pulsing. His vision turned a shade of purple, and he grabbed his head. No one on the boat seemed to notice anything. Jack clamped his eyes shut, but instead of seeing darkness, he saw his house in Violet town with a police car in the driveway. Everything was still had a purple tint to it, and the scene Jack saw changed.

    Flash.

    In his kitchen, his parents were talking to a police officer. Jack's mom was
    crying and Mr. Surge was looking strained. "He must have run away…" Jack's mom choked.

    Flash.

    The cop was driving in his car, talking into a radio. "Evidence points to the boy running from home. No kidnapping took place. Over."

    "That's a relief." The radio said back.

    Flash.

    The ferry was within sight of Pallet. But they weren't turning for it.

    Flash.

    Jack was falling over the side of the boat.

    Flash.

    He was treading water, watching red light flare from the boat.

    Flash.

    A dark cave. A faint light in the distance. He was running for it.

    Flash.

    He was sideways, with darkness all around him. He could here scrambled voices, and something was nudging him.

    <Come on Jack, stop scaring us.> Jack opened his eyes slightly. Two small yellow feet were planted in front of his face.

    "S-Static?" mumbled Jack.

    <Yes, it's me. Get up, will you?>

    Jack slowly sat up. Six or seven people stood around him, looking at him curiously.

    "What happened? I saw other places, I saw stuff I hadn't seen. I think maybe even…" Jack said, not saying the word 'future'.

    "You blacked out for a minute mate. Fell right out of your seat. Gave your Pokémon quite a scare."

    Jack looked up. The man that just spoke was offering his hand. Jack took it and stood up.

    "Thanks," said Jack gratefully, and the man turned to shoo the people watching back into their seats. Jack looked at the man. He couldn't be more than 25, and his fiery red hair was poofed up in an afro. He was wearing a gray overcoat, but it was left open to reveal a yellow shirt. Baggy brown cargo pants hung from his waist, and hanging out under the overcoat were two unused red suspenders. To finish the look, he wore tan flip-flops.

    "Hey, aren't you Fli—" Jack began to say, but his mouth was covered by the red haired man. They sat down on Jack's row and Static hopped up onto Jack's lap.

    "Yes, I'm Flint. Don't repeat my name," Flint said, glancing around. "I don't want to cause an uproar."

    "But why are you here on a common boat? Couldn't you fly anywhere with Drifblim?"

    "That doesn't concern you. Don't take it personally; I just can't say why I'm here. And how'd you know I have a Drifblim?"

    This was odd; why were two Elite Four members in Cherrygrove?

    "I've researched you for a school project a few months ago." Jack answered.

    "Oh really? Why'd you choose me?" asked Flint.

    "Not to sound weird or anything, but you're my favorite Sinnoh Elite Four member, and your battle style is very interesting," said Jack.

    "Hmm?" Flint smiled, nodding to Jack to continue.

    "You utilize the Sunny Day move to increase your fire attacks, and you also have a Steelix knowing Fire Fang which gets boosted from Sunny Day. Your Lopunny knows Sunny Day and Mirror Coat, a perfect way to wall special attacking water types."

    "Wow, you've done your research. What's your name dude?"

    "Jack. Jack Surge." Jack held out his hand.

    "Surge? You wouldn't happen to be related to Lt. Surge, would you?" questioned Flint, shaking Jack's hand.

    "Yes, I am."

    "Hmmm."

    "What is it?" asked Jack.

    "Nothing, nothing. So Jack, what brings a Pokémon expert like yourself to this ferry?"

    The next couple hours were spent discussing Jack's ambition of becoming a Breeder among other things. When Static became bored of the conversation, he began practicing his Ice Punch. Flint noticed that and offered to teach Fire Punch to Static as well. Both Jack and Static were thrilled at this, and Flint used a special item that was colored red. He said it activated fire energy within a Pokémon and allowed them to learn any moves in their move pool that require fire energy. Since Static could learn Fire Punch as an egg move, the move was activated by the item. Flint told them never to speak of the item, as it was one of a kind.

    Soon, Pallet was sitting there on the horizon. However, the boat wasn't angled toward it; instead it was passing it. When Flint noticed this, he frowned.

    "That's odd. I'm going to speak with the captain." He stood up and walked to the front of the boat. Jack slouched in his row and sighed, running his hand through his shaggy brown hair. Even though it was only 2:00 in the afternoon, Jack had only gotten seven and a half hours of sleep and had spent the ten hours he had been awake travelling. He longed for a soft bed, but all he had was a hard bench.

    Jack sat up when he heard a shout from the front. He looked ahead and saw Flint being thrown out of the captain's cabin into the walkway. The captain then stepped out of his cabin and stared at the passengers menacingly. Flint started to move, but the captain whipped out a handgun and pointed it at the red head.

    "We're taking a little detour, if that's alright with you," said the captain.

    "But I have to be in Pallet tonight. My granddaughter is leaving on a Pokémon journey and I wanted to see her off," said an old, graying man.

    "I need to be in Vermillion—"

    Bang.

    The captain had shot a hole in the back window, shattering the glass.

    "Your petty lives can wait a bit longer. If everyone cooperates, there won't be any casualties," the captain threatened. "Except you. You don't deserve to live." The captain lowered is gun at Flint, and he was about to shoot when he was blasted back by an invisible force. He landed on the floor of his cabin with a thud.

    "Flint, what's going on?" asked Jack, his voice shaky from the tense situation.

    "This boat is not a normal ferry." Flint replied, his open hand pointed at the captain. "Anyone who has Pokémon with them, keep them safe. The crew will attempt to steal them."

    "Crew, I thought there were only—"

    "GET DOWN!" yelled Flint, dropping to his stomach and thrusting his arm out. Four men with guns ran out of the cabin and fired shots at Flint, but were blown back by a blast of fire that seemed to come from Flint's hand.
    One of the men flew back through the door, but the others slammed against the outside wall of the captain's cabin.

    "Flint stood up and shouted, "Anyone with a cell phone, call the police immediately!" He took a poke ball from his belt and let the Pokémon out. An Infernape appeared from the red light, its head flaring and its muscles tense. "Blitz, they have guns, so be careful, but follow my orders. Strike to kill anyone with a gun. They are evil men."

    The Infernape nodded, then the two rushed into the captain's cabin, both firing finishing blasts at the three men on the floor outside the room.
    The passengers were whispering in panicked voices. Jack and Elekid were tense, alert for any sound that might be a crew member. Jack was shaking a bit, and tried to concentrate as hard as he could on staying alert. Static began swinging his arms in circles to build up energy.

    With a bang, a door in the floor of the back of the boat swung open and five
    crew members climbed out aiming guns at anyone they passed. The last one slammed the door shut and faced the passengers.

    "If you have Pokémon with you, we require you to turn them over. Any resistance will be silenced." He let the last sentence sink in, then walked straight to Jack.

    "Your Elekid."

    <Jack, hand me to him. I have a plan.> The crew member didn't understand poke speech, so he stared at Jack.

    "What did it say?" The man's breath reeked of beer.

    "H-he has to p-pee." Jack thought up wildly.

    The man raised his eyebrows. "Really? Too bad for it. Hand it over."

    Jack was a bit angry at the man for calling Static 'it', but he picked up Static and held him out. The man reached for Static, but the Elekid quickly kicked the gun upwards out of the man's hand and swung with arm and connected the Thunder Punch with the man's face. Elekid landed on the ground and jumped up onto the top of a seat, then slammed into the other four crew members in quick succession, moving so fast he was a blur. He then hit each man with a Thunder Punch to make sure they were unconscious. Jack just stared.

    "Static, where'd that come from?" Jack asked, his mouth hanging open.

    <That was a Quick Attack. It makes me feel like a ninja,> answered Static, grinning his comical grin.

    "Right, well, does anyone know to drive a boat?" Jack asked the passengers. "I think we should try to get this thing to shore."

    One man stood up and said, "I can. I have my own boat. I'll help."

    "Right, uh, can someone else try to find something to tie up these men?" Jack bent down and picked up a gun. It was heavy in his hand, but still warm from the man holding it. Jack clicked the safety on and stuck the gun in his jacket. He and the man that could drive the boat walked to the cabin where the controls were with Static in front.

    Jack turned and faced the passengers and said, "I'm sure everything will work out. Flint is an Elite Four member, so he should be able to handle them under here." He pointed at the floor. "So uh, yeah."

    They entered the cabin, avoiding the body of the man Flint had hit with fire. The man sat down in the seat and looked at the controls. "I think I can work this, although this boat is an older model of the standard model used today."
    He quickly set to work on starting it. Jack walked to the window and stared out at Pallet. They had passed it, but the man was turning the boat around.
    Jack heard movement from the door leading down to the bottom, and he thought it was Flint, but a crew member came out instead. He saw Jack standing near the controls. He let out a cry and ran towards him. The man collided with Jack's stomach and the wall behind him cracked and gave way. Jack and the crew member fell into the water. Jack went under for a moment, then came up and gulped air. Then out of nowhere he was yanked under. Jack saw the man that had tackled him pulling on his leg, trying to get to the surface. Jack resisted, but the man held on. Jack was running out of breath. He began to panic. Frantically, he pulled out the gun from his jacket an aimed at the man. The man tried to climb over Jack, but only got his head stuck against the gun. Jack pulled the trigger, but nothing happened.

    The safety!

    He switched off the safety and aimed it at the man. He was almost out of air when the man grabbed Jack's belt and pulled Jack farther down. Shocked at the sudden jerk, Jack pulled the trigger and a stream of bubbles emitted from the gun. He didn't see the bullet hit, but he knew it had found its mark when the man stopped struggling. Jack then desperately swam upwards, and just as his vision began to fail, he burst through the surface into cool, fresh saltwater air. Jack inhaled it as a water deprived man in a desert would gulp water. When his breath was caught, reality sunk in.

    I shot someone. I killed someone. Someone is dead because of me.

    Jack felt tainted, as if he had been marked as a killer. He could already hear people scorning him. Wait, no, he did hear people, but they weren't scorning him. Jack looked toward the boat. People were looking out the window and pointing at him.

    "He's alive!"

    "The other man's still under!"

    "The boy survived!"

    <Jack, you're alive!>

    Jack knew that was Static. The Elekid was standing at the edge where the wall had given way. Static would have jumped in after, but he couldn't swim well.

    A flash of red light revealed a Drifblim, which floated to Jack.

    <Drif Drifblim me blim carry you.> the Drifblim said. Jack couldn't understand well since Drifblim was a foreign species, but he picked up a few words. He grabbed a tail hanging from Drifblim and was lifted out of the water. He looked down to see the water a red color, obviously from the man Jack shot. He gulped and averted his eyes, but noticed his clothes were tinted red from the blood.

    Great, now I'll need knew clothes.

    At that thought Jack laughed. At a time like this, he thought of needing new clothes?

    The Drifblim reached the boat and Jack climbed aboard. His knees were shaking and he could hardly stand. Static wrapped his arms around Jack's leg and hugged it tightly.

    "Gave us another scare there, dude. Do you enjoy that?" Flint was leaning against the wall, his lower torso tied with a piece of cloth. It was stained red on one side.

    "Flint, what happened to you?" asked Jack, sitting down and hugging Static.

    "I got shot."

    "What?!"

    "It's nothing. I'll have it healed in no time flat." Flint laughed, then clutched his side painfully. He looked at Jack. "Hurts to laugh."

    Jack smiled. He felt he could get along with Flint.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The boat pulled up into Pallet Port and the ramp was let down. People rushed off to get to where they needed to be. Flint talked to the police officers about what happened, then left, saying he had business elsewhere. Jack had bid him farewell, then wandered around town looking for a Pokémon Center. After not finding one, he walked toward the north end of town.
    Maybe he would just have to sleep outside. The only hotel was way too expensive. He decided to stop at a store and buy food so he wouldn't starve.
    At the store, Jack searched the crackers section for dry food to buy. A lady walked by and then stopped.
    "Oh my gosh! What happened to you poor boy?" the lady asked. Jack turned around and realized she was talking about him.
    "Uh, it's a long story…"
    "You're clothes are stained with blood! Are you okay?"
    "Yeah, not really. I need a place to sleep tonight. Do you know any place in town that I can stay at?" Jack asked.
    "Oh, well you can stay at our house. You must be a Pokémon trainer since you have that poke ball."
    "Oh— no I'm not a trainer, I'm going to get my license in Viridian. And I don't want to intrude in your house, that's not what I meant…" Jack tried, but the lady shook her head.
    "You're staying at our house; we'll get you cleaned up. You look as if you've had quite an adventure already."
    "……you have no idea…"
    So the lady bought Jack's supplies and kindly forced him to her house. On the car ride home, Jack looked at the lady. She had brown hair that hung past her shoulders, tanned skin and a few freckles on her face. Jack could tell she was at least thirty-five, but she seemed much younger. She was talking about how the town needed more places to stay, and that it still attracted a lot of trainers since the famous Samuel Oak lived there. Jack listened most of the time, trying his best not to fall asleep. When they pulled into the driveway, Jack clicked off his seatbelt and climbed out of the car. A man opened the front door and walked out onto the porch. He had gray hair and a frail looking body, but his movements seemed full of energy.
    "Carey, did you bring home this boy? I told you I wasn't up for adopting someone," the man said jokingly with a slightly raspy voice.
    "Don't be silly James; he's going to be a Pokémon trainer. He was trying to get to Viridian but doesn't have a place to stay."
    "I see. Well, let's get you inside son. You look tired."
    Jack followed the man called James into the house. It was nicely decorated, with dark stained oak tables and chair legs. But the most notable detail was the amount of pictures in the house. They were on shelves, the mantle, tables, everywhere. Jack looked at one and saw James and Carey with a little girl, about seven, sitting on the beach with a sunset in the background. The girl appeared in other pictures at different ages.
    "Is this your daughter?" Jack asked as they sat down on a couch. He pointed to a picture of the girl.
    "Yes, that's her. Megan's her name. She's about your age. She left yesterday on a journey. I expect she's in Viridian by now. Going to meet up with her cousin. They're going to travel together."
    Jack nodded. The road of a trainer was a dangerous one, and Static was his partner.
    "Do you have a Pokémon?" James motioned at the Luxury Ball on Jack's belt. "If it isn't too big, you can let it out."
    Jack took the poke ball and released Static. The Elekid appeared from the red light and rubbed his eyes.
    <Finally. Why the heck don't they allow Pokémon in grocery stores? The nerve of some people…> Static grumbled, sitting next to Jack.
    <That's an Elekid, right? He looks tough," remarked James.
    "Yeah, his name's Static, and he was just grumbling about—"
    "The grocery store? Yeah, I know. See, I was a Pokémon trainer back in the day. Gave the Pokémon league quite the challenge. But I've retired to raise my little girl."
    "Wow, so you were a trainer? What Pokémon did you have?" Jack asked eagerly despite his exhaustion.
    "I had a fair few, but they stay at Oak's place. Burrow still stays here with me though. He's my first Pokémon. Hey Burrow!" the man called. A Sandslash walked out of the kitchen and crawled onto the couch with James.
    <Hello human. I am Burrow, a Sandslash. If master has let you into his house, then you are welcome.> the Sandslash said, its dark beady eyes staring at Jack. The boy shifted in his seat uncomfortably.
    "Sorry if he makes you uncomfortable. He doesn't like strangers much. Now, may I get you something to eat?"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    After eating a meal of spaghetti and meatballs, Jack took a long shower while James washed Static. Carey insisted on shopping for a new outfit for Jack, and had left after dinner to buy clothes. James had said it was just an excuse to go shopping, but Carey smacked him on the head with her purse when he said that.

    When Carey returned, she showed Jack his new clothes. She had bought a black t-shirt with long white sleeves extending out the t-shirt sleeves. She had also found a pair of blue cargo pants with three clips on each leg for holding poke balls. Jack was very grateful for this and offered to pay, but Carey wouldn't accept it. She hugged Jack, who blushed deeply; he was never comfortable when girls were close to him.

    They talked a bit longer, then Jack and Static went to the guest room to sleep. Jack had hardly pulled the covers over him when he blacked out from exhaustion.

    End Chapter Two.

    Please review! You won't regret it!

    *Jack*

    Gahh.

    The word "please" always gets me. I hate you.

    But really, I will. Eventually. Just keep in mind I'm behind 8 chapters in another story and I beta 2 stories as well, so.. depends how busy/lazy I am.

    Okay, I found time to do prologue/chapter 1 tonight:

    Alrightt. I like to point out grammar/spelling things first so don't be surprised if every post starts with something like that. XD

    The man with red hair felt sorrow, yet at the same time felt nothing. His father had not been the greatest roll model.

    "roll model" should be "role model". O_o Roll is like.. Moving… =) A big boulder will roll over you today, Jack. BEWARE!

    … No, I didn't catch any foreshadowing. I suck at noticing those things. *shot*

    So, I'm guessing this story follows after Pokemon XD?? Sounds interesting already. Pokemon Colosseum is one of my favorite games. XP If not.. Oh well. Not much else to say about the prologue, honestly. XP

    Chapter one:

    "Yeah, He is. I think someone said his dad's American, too."

    Why is "He" capitalized?

    "Jack." He mumbled in response.

    "Jack," he mumbled in response.

    ^ correct way.

    I will not point this out every time, maybe 1-2 times every chapter to let you know where it needs to be fixed. Hopefully, this was changed in later chapters.. But who knows? J

    Ian turned hand tried to push off the new boy, but was promptly thrown to the ground.

    First part of the sentence doesn't make sense to me.

    Anyway, I think the description in this first part could have been done better. I didn't really feel bad for Jack as he and Ian fought, really. Small things like saying people were cheering Ian on and Ian was grimacing as all this was going down would've made me actually feel empathetic towards Jack. It was a nice little happy ending for a flashback though. 8D

    She was an adult, in her late 30's and showing no signs of age.

    "30's" can be thirties.

    "I don't want to do what you or Uncle Surge does. I'm thankful that you gave me Static," Jack motioned to the Elekid, "but I really want to be a breeder!"

    The "Jack motioned to the Elekid" doesn't fit between there. You can try putting dashes in between though, like this:

    " … I'm thankful that you gave me Static"--Jack motioned to the Elekid--"but I really want to be a breeder!"

    ... I'm not sure if it'd work, though.

    Now, it may be a bit odd for a pokemon to speak so a human can understand it, but in reality, Poke-speech was just like any other language.

    You kinda switched tenses on me here. First part should be: Now, it may have been a bit odd for a pokemon …

    At the same time, Static took the folded clothes off his bed and placed them under the bed.

    Why is "bed" used twice? Repetition like this doesn't go well with the story. =[

    "Don't even start Mom. He meant every damn word he said," Jack looked down at Static, who had fallen off the bed when Jack had stood up.

    Period after "said", not comma. O_o No reason for a comma when it's not saying "Jack said" or "Jack asked" or something after. The sentence is starting something totally different.

    … Wahh, Jack's dad seems like a total bit*h. XD I'm guessing this is the gym leader Surge's family. Makes sense.. Jack's dad and the gym leader Surge act alike in a way.

    Also, Jack and Static's friendship seems really realistic to me, which is good. XP Reminds me of me and some people irl a bit. Can't count how many times my family/friends have cheated on the game board when I was away.

    So far, the "child running away" thing seems kind of cliché, though. But… I've seen good feedback on your story so I'll keep reading nonetheless. Hope you fix these errors and hope they helped as well. ;D I'll do chapter two tomorrow after I get out of school early.

    Hey, Jack! It's me, Bay! =D

    Well, I was originally going to review all of six chapters at Serebii, but so far only gone through the prologue and the first two chapters. I am going to do an overall review of what I think of the story so far instead of focusing on each chapter because I am busy at the moment.

    Like diamondpearl876 said, I like Jack and Static's intereaction so far. Sometimes it is quite funny. :D And also, that weird dream/flash Jack is having...very creepy. Wonder what's going to happen. ;D

    There is something I want to point out though: there were a few times you tell and didn't show. During those "tellings", you could have an oppurtunity to stretch out the characters' personalities more. Here are a couple of examples:

    Jack didn't respond for a while, thinking about his battle with Violet City's Gym Leader, Falkner. He had beaten him only a month ago, and the twenty-three year old leader secretly gave him a badge, even though he wasn't a licensed trainer and the match hadn't been official. He had used Static to take down both Falkner's Pidgey and Pidgeotto. The match was very intense, as Static didn't have much experience in Pokémon battles, so for the first half he acted like a ninja in a cartoon show, trying to pull off ridiculous stunts and dodges, usually ending with him getting a face full of Mud Slap. Pidgey went down easily with a Thunder Punch, but Pidgeotto was a bit harder. Jack had to make Static use Ice Punch, a move his father explained as an egg move, or a move passed from father Pokémon to their offspring. Static's father Charge had been born with the attack and had passed it on to Static.
    Falkner had not expected the attack and hesitated in giving Pidgeotto directions, but it was too late. Static followed Ice Punch with a Thunder Punch, knocking the bird Pokémon unconscious. Falkner had been amazed at how well Static performed and remarked how the Elekid could do well in the Pokémon League Gyms. Jack had just shrugged at this. He had to look away when the Pidgeotto had been finished by the Thunder Punch, even though he was the one who ordered it. He wasn't sure if he liked Gyms, or even Pokémon battles.

    This scene you could have made it as a flashback and showed how Static is acting all like a cartoon ninja and such. Plus, it's a good oppunitity to know him and Jack a bit more.

    This scene you had an oppurnitity to showcase James' and Carey's personalities more, even if they are just minor characters.

    Another thing that irks me is Jack already saw two Elite trainers. In my ophinion, Jack already suddenly went through things a bit fast, but I guess all things will be explained later (keep in mind I only read two chapters so far).

    The last thing is Jack's reaction to him shooting someone. For one paragraph he was worried, but all of a sudden it was as if he suddenly forgot about it. However, I had not read chapters 3-6 yet and it could be a chance that event will come back to him sooner or later.

    Well, so far the story is getting interesting, but a bit jerkey. I will try to catch up on the next few chapters at Serebii, but will be quite busy so the next review might be a while. Well, good luck on the next chapter!

    Lmao. Already only the beginning of the chapter and Jack & Static are being crazy. XP Still loving the realistic friendship they have here.

    And... I'm kinda confused as to why Xatu wouldn't tell what was going on. I think he'll eventually tell even though he said he wouldn't.. but meh.. I hope that's cleared up eventually, because that seems very unlikely.

    I liked how you made Falkner secretly give out the badge, even though Jack shouldn't really have it. Was a nice twist imo, since most gym leaders wouldn't do that. XP

    I agree with Bay on the Elite Four thing. It makes Jack kinda Gary-stueish to meet all these important people so soon already.

    The boat thing was kind of unexpected for a 2nd chapter, but it was pulled off well. O_O And, again, I agree with Bay on the "omg jack forgot he shot someone already" thing. But I think it'll come back and haunt him. If I were Jack I woulda went running home already. XD

    "Oh yeah, I forgot we were leaving." Jack answered. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and stood up.

    Comma after "leaving", not period. REMEMBER!#1 This happens throughout the chapter still.

    When his head looked like it had just been submerged in water, Jack shook is shaggy hair violently, spraying the entire bathroom with droplets of water.

    "Jack shook his shaggy hair violently"

    Jack dried his hair with a towel, shook it again so it hung down in a messy way, than swept his bangs across his face.

    "Than" should be "then". "Than" compares two things most of the time.

    If you look at it, it looks all bunched together. o_O Try fixing it for better read? XD

    <Then who are you going to pick as a starter?> Static asked, looking up at Jack, who was still starring out the window.

    "staring"

    "You seem older than 13. May I ask why you waited?" the woman asked.

    "thirteen". numbers under 100 should be written out

    <How did she know you're mother?> asked Static.

    "your". How did she know you are mother? wouldn't make sense. XP

    Great, now I'll need knew clothes.

    "new", not "knew"

    Hope you post chapter 3 soon. Originally the review was longer but PC decided to piss me off once again, and froze and I lost a lot of typed up things that I'm too lazy to remember. Sorry. :C

    Chapter Three: Reporters and Thugs
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "No Jack! Please, don't kill me! I have done nothing!" A man in a dark uniform knelt in front of Jack.
    "You don't deserve to live," Jack said, raising a gun and pointing it at the man.
    The man leapt forward and grasped Jack's legs. "Please! Don't kill meeee!"
    Suddenly they were underwater. Jack could hardly breathe, and the man was still pleading, but none of his words were comprehendible; all that came out were bubbles. Jack lowered the gun and pulled the trigger. Bubbles streamed out and the man screamed. The scream was heard by Jack, even underwater. Jack broke the surface of the water and laughed a cruel laugh, as if rejoicing in the man's death.
    He kept laughing, but now he was in a chair in a courtroom.
    Jack.
    He just laughed his head off, despite the congregation in the courtroom, many of whom were crying.
    Jack.
    "You didn't have to kill him! He's done nothing to you!" A lady was shouting.
    "Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!"
    "Why'd you shoot my daddy mister? He didn't hurt you," a little boy was saying.
    "Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!"
    Jack!
    "NO!!!" Jack sat up, breathing heavily and covered in sweat.
    <Jack, what's wrong?> Static asked. He was sitting on the footboard of the bed.
    "I didn't mean to, Static. I didn't mean to shoot him. I'm sorry," Jack choked, tears running down his face. "I didn't mean to… I'm sorry… I d-didn't… I'm s-sorry…"
    Static crawled over to Jack and wrapped his thick arms around his trainer. <I know Jack, it was an accident. You didn't mean it.> He knew what Jack was upset about.
    "I was l-laughing at him, and his w-wife and son were there, and they were upset, a-and I was laughing," Jack cried, holding Static close.
    <It was just a nightmare, Jack. Just a dream.>
    "I know. I'm sorry."
    "Did you sleep well, dear?" Carey asked as she put a plate of eggs and sausage in front of Jack. They were in the kitchen, James sitting across from Jack and Carey sitting down in her place to Jack's right.
    "Not really." He picked up his fork and speared a sausage moodily.
    He looked up to see James and Carey with their heads bowed and their hands folded.
    "Dear Lord, we thank you for this food we have this morning, this beautiful day you have given us, and this wonderful young man we could help. We praise you with all our hearts. In Jesus' name, Amen."
    Jack had hastily put his fork down and folded his hands as well, his face red with embarrassment. Religious things always made him uneasy. As James finished the blessing, Carey said 'Amen", and Jack said it as well.
    "Forgive us if we made you uncomfortable, Jack. It's just a tradition of ours to say the blessing before we eat," James said in his slow voice.
    Jack mumbled a response, not meeting the man's eyes. The three began eating in silence while Static and Burrow the Sandslash ate in the kitchen.
    "Jack, are you sure you're okay? You don't look well." Carey was looking at him with concern.
    "Had a bad dream," Jack said hollowly. A lump formed in his throat and he swallowed hard.
    "It didn't have anything to do with yesterday, did it?" James asked.
    Jack nodded and took a bite of eggs. The fluffy scrambled eggs tasted dry. With difficulty, he swallowed them and took a drink of orange juice.
    The laughing began in his head and he could hear the man screaming.
    "It was about a man," Jack mumbled. He fought back tears and looked at his plate of half-eaten food. Even though they looked concerned, the two adults had been respectful enough not ask what happened.
    They finished their meal in silence, then Jack went to prepare his stuff for the trip to Viridian.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Jack and Static were standing in the foyer of the house. James and Carey were shaking Jack's hand and Burrow was talking to Static.

    "This is our phone number, call if anything happens," Carey said. She handed Jack a piece of paper. Jack looked at it. It said the number, then under it, "James and Carey Migoto."
    Jack thanked them, and then opened the door. They all walked out on the porch and Jack walked down the steps. He turned. "Thanks again, Mr. and Mrs. Migoto!" he said. Static said goodbye to Burrow, then jumped down and caught up to Jack. The two walked down the driveway and onto the road.

    "He's a fine young man," James said to his wife.

    She nodded. "I bet Megan would like him."

    "Maybe. There's a chance that they will meet in Viridian."

    "I hope Megan's safe. I would be glad if the two of them traveled together. That Elekid is strong."

    "Definitely."

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Jack and Static walked up the path, Viridian City in clear sight. It was noon and Static had been practicing Fire Punch the entire time. At the sight of the city, Static had stopped practicing and charged ahead, leaving Jack in a cloud of dust. Jack had hardly noticed; his mind was still on the previous day. Something seemed odd, or out of place, and Jack wanted to find out.
    There were two Elite Four members in Cherrygrove yesterday. Lorelei by the bus stop and Flint on the ferry. Then there were those visions. Where did they come from? Jack thought to himself.
    <Jack! Hurry up!> Static yelled from far ahead.
    Jack ignored him. Then there were those goons on the boat.
    You shot one of them.
    They were obviously bad men, but why would they try stealing Pokémon for no reason? They couldn't be Team Rocket; they were defeated about 20 years ago and Giovanni is said to be dead. Why then would they want to steal them out of the blue? Surely if some evil organization had formed, the government would know. I wonder—
    <Jack! Get your butt up here!> Static was standing on top of a welcome sign.
    "Static, get down from there!" Jack called and started jogging to catch up. When Jack had reached the sign, Static jumped down onto Jack's shoulders.
    <Let's get a move on, we are almost there!>
    Jack began walking into the city, taking note of the surroundings. It wasn't much different then Violet. Both were about the same size, same traffic, the Pokémon around the town were pretty common—it had a gym and it led to the Pokémon League entrance—and the environment seemed the same.
    After asking directions from passing people, Jack found his way to the Pokémon League registration building. It was two stories and looked almost like a regular office building. The boy and his Elekid crossed the parking lot and entered the building. Cool air greeted them, and a secretary at the front desk addressed them.
    "Sir, are you here to register in the Indigo League as an official trainer?" She asked without looking over.
    "Uh, yes ma'am." Duh. Why else would I be here?
    "Name?"
    "Jack Surge."
    "Age?"
    "15."
    The lady turned to face Jack. She stared at him through thin square glasses before saying, "Please take a seat, and you will be called back momentarily. There is a newscast here doing a little thing on beginning trainers. It's a common time for them to start new journeys."
    Jack nodded and took his seat, Static sitting on his lap. Great. This place will be filled with a bunch of 13 year olds thinking they're all that. This will be a bit unpleasant. Suddenly, Jack's mind pulsed again, just as it had on the boat, his vision turning a shade of purple, only this time he didn't see any visions. He shuddered after the feeling passed.
    <What just happened?> asked Static. He had felt Jack shiver.
    "N-nothing. I'm fine." Jack shook the feeling off.
    A lady opened up a door and looked at Jack. "Jack Surge? Would you please come this way?"
    Jack picked up Static and put him on his shoulders and followed the lady into the back room. As he passed through the door, he was greeted by a large room with desks lining the walls, each desk with a computer. At each desk there was an employee with a young teenager behind them. At the far side was a long counter with employees behind it.
    "Right this way, please." The lady led Jack to a computer along a wall and she sat down at it.
    The lady made a few clicks and then spoke to Jack. "Full name?"
    "Jack Allen Surge."
    "Age?"
    "15."
    "Date of birth?"
    Jack sighed. "This will take a while?"
    "Yes."
    "Okay."
    After giving the lady all the required info, she asked for ID. Jack gave her his driver's permit. Ten minutes later, she was done asking questions. A few more clicks and then she stood up. "Your registration is complete." Then she led Jack to a wall with a white sheet draped on it and a camera in front. Jack stood in front of the camera and the lady snapped a photo. Then she led him back to the desk. Please wait here while I print your license. She walked across the room into another back room that read, 'Employees only.'
    Jack stood waiting, and Static hopped off his shoulders. <Have you decided which starter to choose yet?>
    "Gah! I forgot! Let's see, Squirtle, Charmander, or Bulbasaur. Which do you think is best?"
    <I say Charmander, because fire is really cool!> Static ignited a flame in his hand as if to do Fire Punch.
    A couple young teenagers took notice and pointed.
    "What Pokémon is that?"
    "I don't know, but it looks like it is using a fire type move."
    "It looks like an electric type."
    Soon a small crowd of 13 year olds had gathered around Static and were watching him use the three different Element Punches. Static seemed to enjoy this, as he began doing two punches at a time.
    "Static, would you stop showing off?" Jack said to the Elekid, acting as if what Static was doing wasn't all that.
    "Hey you! Are you this Pokémon's trainer?" a kid with black hair asked.
    "Uh, yeah," Jack said.
    "Wow, you must be really strong. Are you here to see new trainers start?"
    "Are you from the Pokémon League?"
    "Of course he isn't." A boy with long blond hair said, walking over to the group. The boy didn't look any older then 14. He swept his bangs out of his eyes and pointed at Static. "That is an Elekid. It is the pre-evolved form of Electabuzz. That means that it hasn't matured and gained enough experience to evolve, unless the trainer won't let it evolve, which I doubt." His voice had an air of confidence in it, as if the boy knew he was better than everyone else. "Furthermore," he said, looking at Jack with a sneer, "the trainer is just now registering. He is not a League member and is as inexperienced as the rest of you."
    Jack had been growing angrier with every word the blond kid said. The boy had blatantly insulted Static as a Pokémon and Jack as a trainer.
    "Hey kid, what makes you the expert? Have any Pokémon? " Jack asked with a half-confident voice.
    "As a matter of fact, I do happen to have a Pokémon. After you get a license, we'll battle in the park. 3:00. You'd better be there, loser." The blond kid turned and walked to the door.
    Then, without warning, Static moved with Quick Attack speed in front of the blond kid.
    <Excuse me, sir. My name is Static.> Static said, holding out a hand to shake. The blond kid squatted down to be level with Static then said,
    "My name's Chris. Not nice to meet you." He pushed Static's hand away, and then began to stand up. But as he did so, Static grabbed his hand and pulled it forward, then slammed his other clenched yellow hand into Chris's face. The blond kid fell back in surprise, clutching his face. Jack had been frozen in place the entire time, watching with disbelief.
    The blond kid stood up again and tried kicking Static, only to get his foot shocked on contact. Static took the blow but stayed on his feet. Chris, however, stumbled and fell on his butt. Angry and embarrassed, the boy leapt to his feet and ran to the door, yelling back, "I'll beat you, you fat *** Pokémon! I'll pulverize you in battle!" He pushed the door open and sprinted out, leaving a stunned crowd of kids, employees, and Jack, looking at the door. Static shrugged his tiny shoulders, and then turned to Jack.
    <Pretty great, eh?> Glee was obvious on the Pokémon's face.
    "Static, don't do that again. We could get our license suspended for attacking trainers."
    <Hey, if someone plays dirty, you play dirty back. You can't let someone trash talk you like that.>
    "Yeah, whatever," Jack mumbled, turning to the crowd. "Uh, there isn't anything to see here so, just, just go back to whatever you were doing."
    The group of people slowly cleared, leaving Jack and Static alone by the computer desk. The lady that had been printing Jack's license then came walking out with an envelope. She handed it to Jack.
    "In it are your trainer card and certificate of registration. The certificate is just an extra document you keep in case you lose your card. Then you show the certificate to an employee at any registration office and we can give you another license, but that will cost quite a lot of money."
    Jack took the envelope and opened it up. He pulled out the card and looked at it. It was red, with his picture on the right and his personal information on the left. He stuck it in his wallet and looked at the certificate. It had the same basic stuff written on it. He put the certificate back in the envelope, and then put it in his backpack.
    "If you're ready, you can get your starter now," the lady said. As they walked over to the counter, a TV crew came out of a back room and walked over to the counter. A man in a suit holding a microphone began speaking to the camera about how trainers began their journeys here.
    Jack tried to ignore them, but the camera equipment was distracting. He looked over to the other side of the white counter at another employee. The employee was pressing a few buttons on the back wall. He turned to face Jack. Three Pokéballs rose from holes in the counter and sat in front of Jack.
    "These here are da startin' pogeys. Bulbasaur, Charmander, an' Squirtle. Which do you want, kid?" The man asked. He had an unshaven face and crooked teeth. He didn't look as if he cared for his job much.
    Jack looked down at Static, who was climbing up Jack's leg to see well. "Which do you want again?" Jack asked his Pokémon as it sat on Jack's shoulders.
    <Charmander would be cool. I don't know any moves that have an advantage on him, so we'd be equal.>
    Jack seemed to be hit by a revelation. Instead of choosing one that he would be better than, Static had chosen the Pokémon that would be equal to him, one that would be a challenge to battle. Static really did want to become strong. What and incredible thought for a three year old Pokémon.
    "I'll take Charmander," Jack said at once, grabbing the middle Pokéball. He turned and released the Charmander on the navy carpet in front of him. Red light emitted from the Pokéball, then materialized into a small lizard shaped creature. As the Charmander stopped glowing, Jack gasped at what he saw.
    The Charmander flashed sparkly light, and then looked up at Jack. In stead of ordinary orange, Charmander's leathery skin was a brilliant gold.
    A few others gasped as well. "Is that Charmander…?"
    "Shining." Jack said in a hoarse voice. This wasn't real. He couldn't believe it.
    "Hey, look over here," the reporter said in a fast voice. "Could it be? Why, it is! This young man has chosen a shining starter! As many of you know, shining Pokémon are incredibly rare and are hardly ever seen. Shining Pokémon, or alternate-colored Pokémon, are Pokémon with altered genetic coding that results in an off colored appearance. Some species have few differences, while others, such as the Charmander family, are drastically different from their ordinary species. Also, they radiate an immense amount of energy during evolution. Ten times more than ordinary Pokémon. Let's find out what the new owner of this shining Pokémon has to say." The reporter took his camera crew over to Jack.
    "Well, young man. How do you feel about obtaining this incredibly rare Pokémon?"
    Jack hadn't listened to the question. He had bent down and rescued the little Charmander from the crowd. With the little lizard in his arms, he looked at the reporter and asked, "What was the question," while every second his face grew hotter. He was on national television.
    "I said how do you feel about obtaining this incredibly rare Pokémon?"
    "Um, well, er, it is good, I guess. I mean, even if Charmander's shining, he is still a Pokémon, right?"
    "Well, uh, I suppose, but this is not something that happens every day. In the history of the Pokémon League, only seventeen other shining starters have been given. It has been over half a century and only seventeen. Six were Charmanders. How do you suppose your friends and family will feel about this?"
    That question hit Jack hard. How would your family and friends feel about this? I have no friends. Mike moved, never made any others. My family doesn't care. Dad's too stuck up, Mom might, but my brother…… he never cared about any of us, Jack thought. He looked at the reporter.
    "No further comment." And he snatched the Pokédex that the employee with crooked teeth had placed on the counter, and then proceeded out of the room. Some people tried to follow him, but Jack started running. Across the parking lot and onto the sidewalk, all the while holding his Charmander in his arms.
    When he felt he was far away enough from the building, Jack slowed and looked at the Charmander. "You doing alright, buddy?" he asked it.
    The Charmander looked at him with tired yet annoyed eyes. <Those people back there were annoying.> the Charmander spoke in a young male voice.
    Jack laughed a bit. "They sure were. Do you have a name, little guy?"
    The shining Charmander was silent for a bit, then spoke. <…… My name is Sceadon.>
    Jack frowned a bit. "Sceadon? Does that have a meaning or anything?"
    <…Yes. My mother told me it had to do with my hide color.> Sceadon looked at his leathery arm. <She said that I would know why I was named that when I was ready.>
    Odd. I wonder what it means. Jack thought. "Where do you want to go, Sceadon? We could go to the park and train. I have to be there anyway to battle some kid. Do you want to go there?"
    <Sure.> Sceadon said, but then his stomach grumbled. <After I have something to eat. I haven't eaten all day.>
    "They didn't feed you at the registration building?" Jack asked incredulously.
    <No. They only feed us at night to keep our activity and growth rates to a minimum. That's what one of the handlers said.>
    <Jack. Don't forget about me.> Static said, thumping Jack's head as if playing the drums. <You really need to cut your hair. Your head is shaggier than an Arcanine's.>
    Jack shook his head, causing his shaggy brown hair to smack Static in the face. "My hair is fine," Jack said as he turned a corner on the sidewalk and noticed the park up ahead. "Long hair is cool."
    <Cool? As in cold? I don't see how long hair could make you 'cooler.'> Sceadon looked at Jack skeptically.
    <Not like that. When humans say they look cool, they mean that they look attractive.>
    "It does not mean that!" Jack said indignantly. A man in a business suit passing by jumped as Jack said that and hurriedly walked away, shooting glances back at Jack. Jack sighed. Sometimes he would forget where he was when he was talking to his Pokémon.
    <Then what does it mean, master?> Sceadon asked.
    "It means that we look acceptable to other humans. That they think we look normal."
    <I guess I'm not cool then…> Sceadon said sadly, looking at his tiny gold hand.
    "Oh—no, that doesn't mean that! You're being a different color is unique. Sometimes it's better to be different."
    <So you mean, you don't think badly of me because I'm gold?>
    "Of course not. I couldn't have asked for a better starter Pokémon," Jack said, smiling down at the lizard in his arms.
    <Thank you, master.> Sceadon snuggled against Jack, tears forming at the edges of the Charmander's eyes.
    "Sceadon? You don't need to call me master. Just call me Jack."
    <J-Jack? Is that your name? What does it mean?>
    "Oh, um, I don't really know. Is it important?"
    <Your name is what you are. I am a Charmander, but Sceadon is my name. Sceadon is what I am. Sceadon is who I am. It is what defines me. Names are of great importance.>
    "I see. I've never thought of it that way." Jack looked up. They were at the entrance to the park. "We're here. Static, time to get down; my shoulders are hurting."
    Static hopped down and landed softly on the ground next to Jack. They proceeded into the park and looked around. A playground sat on the left, complete with slides, monkey bars, teeter totter, and a jungle gym. To the right was a wide open grass field with two large soccer goals at the end. Straight ahead were some picnic tables in the shade of two large oak trees. The three made their way to a picnic table, where Jack sat Sceadon on the table. Static jumped up to sit next to Sceadon while Jack took off his backpack and rummaged around for food.
    <I haven't introduced myself properly yet. I'm Static, the Elekid.> Static told Sceadon.
    <Hello. I'm Sceadon, the Charmander. Nice to meet you.> the little gold lizard said back.
    Jack pulled out two apples and a small bag of pretzels the Migotos had given him. He gave the two apples to his Pokémon and opened the pretzels for himself.
    Static eagerly bit his apple, chewing the piece and biting off another before he swallowed the first bite. Sceadon, however, ate his slowly, chewing and swallowing before taking another bite. This surprised Jack, since Sceadon was obviously starving. With a smile, Jack ate a few pretzels, looking at the sky through the leaves. He sat back against the table.
    "It sure is a nice day here in Viridian," Jack said to no one in particular. Static tossed his apple core away and sat next to Jack.
    <It is a nice day. Great for training!> Static hopped off the bench and sprinted for the soccer field. The two-foot-tall Pokémon then proceeded to run around the entire soccer field, and then return to Jack. The Pokémon's trainer's mouth hung open.
    <You have a lot of energy, Static. You would be good in battles.> Sceadon commented.
    <Definitely right about that. Say, Jack. How much longer until that battle with the blond kid?> Static asked, panting from his run.
    "About an hour. It's two right now, so at three we'll find that kid."
    <Who is this kid you speak of?> Sceadon asked. Jack looked at the Charmander, then smiled and patted its head. Sceadon was young but had incredible manners.
    Static explained to Sceadon what had happened, and Sceadon nodded at the end. <He seems like a person who has much confidence. Confidence clouds your judgment. That will be the boy's weak spot.>
    Both Jack and Static looked at Sceadon. "Where did you learn that?" Jack asked, blown away at the knowledge Sceadon had.
    <Observation. There were some other Pokémon that I lived with that acted the same way.> Sceadon replied, finishing the last of his apple.
    "Mmhmm, wow. That's very smart. Alright. We'll blow this kid away," Jack said.
    <You do not look very excited, Jack. Do you not want to battle this trainer?> Sceadon asked, looking inquisitively at Jack with big eyes.
    "No, I'm excited. I just don't think it is worth jumping around for," Jack answered. It was true; he never did show excitement or enthusiasm very well. Most people passed him off as boring, but Static knew this about him and hardly ever complained.
    <Anyway, I'm going to practice Fire Punch.> Static said, walking on short legs to a tree. He sat against the trunk and held out his hand and fire ignited in it for a few seconds, and then died down. Static continued this, each time holding it a fraction of a second longer.
    <He is very dedicated,> Sceadon remarked. <He will do well in this upcoming battle.>
    "I suppose he will," Jack said, picking up the little Charmander and sitting it in his lap, careful to not get hit by the flaming tail. "What about you, Sceadon? What do you want to do during a Pokémon journey?"
    <Why are asking me? You are my trainer, and I follow your orders. That is the way of Pokémon trainers, is it not?> Sceadon leaned against Jack and looked up at him.
    "It may be for some, but not for me. You have your own dreams and you can choose for yourself what you want to do."
    <Jack…Thank you…> Sceadon said, hugging Jack with small arms.
    "Your welcome," Jack said, smiling and hugging Sceadon back.
    <I think battling in gyms would be fun,> Sceadon said thoughtfully. <I want to do something that can improve my skills.> Sceadon looked away embarrassedly as he said that.
    "Hey, buddy, don't worry. I'll help you improve your skills and become the best Charmander there is. Unless of course you want to evolve, then you can be the greatest Charizard. Put your skills together with you being shining and everyone will admire you." Jack looked to the sky. Everyone will admire you… I wish that could be me as well.
    <I think I would like that.> Sceadon said, nuzzling its head against Jack's chest. <Then I can be noticed for who I am, not what I am.> He looked at his golden arms again.
    "You know that humans admire shining Pokémon. It isn't a bad thing that you are a different color."
    <Really? All the Pokémon I see says I am a disgrace.>
    "Don't listen to them anymore. Be proud of your coloring. It makes you unique," Jack said, smiling at his Charmander. He had chosen a good partner.
    The two talked for a while, getting to know each other and enjoying the shady spot under the oak tree. Static joined the conversation, and they hovered over certain battle tactics, which Sceadon picked up easily despite his young age. When it was 2:55, Jack, Static, and Sceadon started walking to the park entrance to find the kid Chris. As they were passing the playground, Jack noticed something on the other side of it. A girl was talking to three men, taking a few steps back from them. One of the men shouted something and the girl cringed. Another man raised his fist.
    "HEY!" Jack called to the men. He turned and ran across the playground, his Pokémon close behind. "What is the problem here?" He said as he reached them.
    "Hey Joey, dis kid is talkin' to us," One man said in a gangster voice.
    "Yeah, kid, don' bodder us."
    Jack stepped back from the men. They looked dangerous. He glanced at the girl. She looked about the same age as Jack, with long, light-brown hair and bangs hanging to her eyes, which were also brown. She was wearing a tight blue tank top and a red skirt. She looked a bit scared, but her face was blushed. She glanced at Jack and suddenly he knew who it was. It was Megan Migoto, the daughter of James and Carey.
    "Go away, kid, if you knows what's good fer ya."
    Jack tried to think of something brave to say, but he couldn't. "Get behind me," he said to Megan, desperately trying to think of something.
    "Look at da boy, he's tryin' to protect tha' girl." One of the men advanced.
    <Get away, fathead!> Static said, stepping up in front of Jack.
    "What's dat thing? Thinks it can protect the kids? I've seen cereal boxes bigger than it." The man laughed and the other two joined in.
    <Don't underestimate me!> Static yelled angrily, jumping up and slamming a Thunder Punch into the man's face. The man gave a cry and stumbled back, then looked down at Static.
    "You God damn midget!" He aimed a kick at the Elekid, who dodged it and slammed a Fire Punch into the man's planted leg. The big man howled in pain, falling down and clutching the burnt spot on his calf. During this, Megan had grabbed Jack's arm and squeezed it in fright. Jack glanced at her, and then addressed the three men.
    "Leave us alone," he said without much confidence.
    "Like hell we won't!" Another man yelled and charged at Jack. Suddenly, Sceadon climbed up Jack and stood on his head. He inhaled deeply, and then blew fire right at the man.
    "Graahhhh!" screamed the man as he caught fire. He dropped to the ground and started rolling around on the rubber tire shavings that covered the playground. Jack was stunned. The third man looked at Jack, then the Pokémon, then turned and ran away. The two others got up and followed him, screaming curses back at Jack and his Pokémon. When they had passed out of the park through the gate, Jack realized he had been holding his breath. He exhaled deeply, then sat on the ground and put his head in his hands.
    "Thank you," Megan said, and Jack looked up. "They asked for some money, and I thought they were charity collectors or something. They laughed when I said that, and kept asking me for my money. I told them that I didn't have much, but they kept asking. That's when you came."
    Jack stared at her with his jaw hanging open slightly. She thought they were charity collectors? She was getting mugged, but she didn't realize it?
    "I'm Megan Migoto, beginning Pokémon trainer. What's your name?" she asked kindly.
    "I'm Jack. Jack Surge. Also beginning Pokémon trainer," Jack answered, shaking Megan's hand.
    "So where are you from, Jack?" Megan asked, sitting down next to him. This made Jack a bit uncomfortable. She was kind of close. Jack stood up and offered her his hand.
    "Let's sit over by that bench instead of on the ground. The burnt rubber smells bad." It was true; the tire shavings the man had rolled in had burnt and smelled. Megan took his hand and stood up.
    "Are these your Pokémon?" she asked, nodding at Static and Sceadon. The two Pokémon walked over to their trainer. Jack picked up Sceadon, cautious of his tail, and Static walked by his side.
    "Yeah, they are. I've had Static, my Elekid, for about three years. I just got Sceadon today," Jack said, nodding to the Charmander, who was shaking a bit from the large Ember it had just used.
    The two trainers sat on the bench, and Jack looked at Megan. "I'm from Violet City in Johto."
    "Wow, that's far away. Why did you come here?" she asked, her soft brown eyes looking at him curiously. Jack blushed and pretended to look at the sky. She's pretty.
    "Uh, well, I didn't want to be in Johto, so I thought I'd come here." He hated to lie to her, but he didn't want to tell the truth.
    "I'm from Pallet Town. I got my license there, and I was supposed to meet my cousin here, but she is sick and won't be coming for another week or so."
    "I met your parents in Pallet," Jack said slowly. "They were really nice people."
    "Oh, you met my parents?"
    "Yeah. It's a long story, but when I got to Pallet, all the hotels were full or too expensive, and there wasn't a Pokémon Center, but I met your mom and she let me stay the night at your house."
    Megan suddenly blushed. "Did you see my room?" she asked.
    "No, I never looked in," Jack said honestly.
    <I did though. Burrow showed me. It was white and pink, with posters of some girl singing—> Static began, but Megan gave a yelp and Jack cut him off.
    "What were you doing in there?! You shouldn't go snooping around someone's house," Jack said as sternly as he could.
    "Will you look at that? The guy has a girlfriend, how sweet. I'm sorry to say that you will be humiliated in front of her."
    Jack's snapped to his right. Chris was standing there, looking at him with a smug expression. Static hopped off the bench and faced the blond kid. <Come on, Jack. Let's beat this guy.>
    Jack stood up as well. "S-she's not my girlfriend. We just met." Chris laughed at that.
    "Whatever. Let's go over here and battle." Chris jerked his thumb to the empty soccer field. He turned and walked toward it.
    Megan stood up and said, "Why does he think I'm your girlfriend?"
    Jack looked back at her. "Well, we were talking together, so I guess he assumed… Whatever. Do you want to watch the battle?" Wow, she's pretty naïve to not understand that…
    Megan nodded and followed Jack to the field. Jack, Megan, Static, and Sceadon stood half way between center field and the penalty box. Chris took the same position on the other side of the field.
    "Alright, loser! One on one battle!" Chris yelled, holding up one finger. Jack nodded, then pointed.
    "Static! Let's do this!"
    Static ran out and stood at center field.
    Chris held out a Pokéball. "Pulverize that wimp, Macho!" He threw the Pokéball and a Machoke materialized. Jack clenched his fist. This might be harder then he thought.
    "Static, Machoke will use close combat moves. Try to avoid getting close!" Jack called. Static nodded in agreement. The Elekid started bouncing on its toes, ready for anything.
    Chris laughed. "Earthquake," he directed his Machoke. The blue Pokémon raised its massive arms in preparation to slam them into the ground.
    Jack hesitated for a moment in surprise, the yelled, "Gonna have to get close! Stun it with a Quick Attack!"
    Static dashed forward in a blur and slammed into Machoke before it could hit the ground.
    "Vital Throw." Chris said calmly.
    Machoke rolled back after impact, then lunged forward and grabbed Static. He raised the Elekid in the air and spun once before throwing him to the ground. Jack winced when Static hit the ground and Megan gasped.
    Jack called out, "Static! Hang in there! Hit it with Swift!" Static quickly recovered and jumped back, then thrust his hands out. Glowing stars shot from his hands and collided with Machoke, who tried blocking with his arms.
    "Foresight," Chris commanded. When the stream of stars stopped, Machoke's eyes glinted, and then it roared at Static.
    "Give it up, Jack. This next move will end it. DYNAMIC PUNCH!" Chris shouted.
    Machoke sprinted forward towards Static, its fist raised and glowing.
    Jack thought fast. With Foresight, the punch would hit. Unless…
    "Static! Thunder Punch his Dynamic Punch!"
    Static smiled, even though Jack couldn't see him. The small electric Pokémon ran toward its opponent, his fist crackling with electricity. The two Pokémon threw their fists together. At the last second, Static opened his small hand and grabbed Machoke's. Static knew what to do before Jack said it.
    "Now, Ice Punch!" Jack called. Static pulled himself forward using Machoke's hand, and then with his free hand, nailed an Ice Punch right in the muscle Pokémon's face. The Machoke fell back and Static was falling toward him. With the hand Static used to grab the Dynamic Punch, he slammed a Fire Punch into the falling Machoke's face. Machoke hit the ground and Static landed on the Pokémon's chest. Then Static leapt up as high as he could, and both Jack and Static yelled at the same time, "SHOCK WAVE!" A huge electric pulse emitted from Static's prongs, hitting the Machoke before it could stand up. Static flipped backwards in the air and landed in front of Jack in a crouch position. The Elekid slowly stood up. He was breathing hard from using four techniques in a row.
    Machoke tried to get up, shuddered, then collapsed, unconscious. They had won the battle.
    Static turned to Jack and gave a thumbs up with his small clawed finger, then ran over and leapt into Jack's arms. <I did it! I won!> Static said happily.
    Chris was standing in disbelief. Jack hugged Static, and then put him on the ground. He walked over to shake hands with Chris. "Nice match. It's a good thing we didn't bet money on this match."
    Chris returned Machoke to its Pokéball and turned away. "I got unlucky. That's all." Then he walked away, ignoring Jack's hand. Jack looked at him, and then turned to Megan, who was walking over to him.
    "That was very impressive. You trained Static well," she said to him. Jack blushed a bit and said,
    "He learned that move off an anime that he liked to watch. I just made sure he was doing it right."
    Megan laughed. "You're so modest."
    Jack turned away and blushed more, swallowing hard and trying to compose himself. Talking to girls was always hard for him. Sceadon, who was standing next to Jack, took notice of this and was about to say something, but thought better. Static was too busy doing a victory dance that looked completely ridiculous to notice. Jack turned around and smiled. "Thanks, Megan."
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    It was seven o'clock and Jack and Megan were sitting in the Pokémon Center eating dinner. Megan had sent out her Pokémon, a Chikorita named Chlora, to play with Jack's Pokémon. The three Pokémon were eating poke food on the floor while Jack and Megan finished their pizza.

    "Do you have a room?" Jack asked Megan, taking a bite of his pizza crust.

    "I did, but I checked out this morning because I thought my cousin would be here and we'd leave for Pewter."

    Jack nodded. "That's a bummer that your cousin can't go with you." He was surprised how fast he had gotten used to talking to her without blushing.

    "Yeah, it is. Hey, aren't you going to Pewter tomorrow?" Megan asked.

    "Uh, yeah, I am. Why do you ask?" Jack said.

    "Well, I was thinking," Megan said, looking down at her plate. "Maybe you and I could travel together!"

    Jack choked on his crust. "Wait. Travel with me?"

    "Yes! I would have to wait until my cousin got better before I could go anywhere because my mom and dad don't want me travelling alone. Stuff happens, like what happened in the park. So if I traveled with you, I wouldn't be alone! I could meet up with my cousin in Pewter or Cerulean." She looked at Jack, who was looking at her with a weird expression. Megan blushed. "I mean, if you don't want to…"

    Jack swallowed hard and said, "No no, I don't mind. It was just a bit unexpected. We could travel together. It would be alright." He looked out the window. Even though the afternoon had been pleasant, by 5:30 it began to rain, and now it was a heavy downpour.

    "Alright. We can go together."

    The two finished their meal, cleaned up their mess, then walked to the counter to get rooms.

    "Excuse me," Jack said to the woman behind the counter. "We'd like to rooms please."

    The lady turned around and looked sadly at them. "I'm sorry, but we are renovating in the west wing, so we don't have as many rooms as usual. I don't know why they manager wanted to renovate now; it's the beginning of summer. Newly graduated students become trainers and we always get filled up. Anyways, we have one room left in the east wing, unless you want a room in the construction area. Don't worry. It has two beds."

    Jack's face turned red. He would have to sleep in the same room as Megan. Megan, however, wasn't blushing at all, not seeming to fully realize the situation. She is naïve…

    "We'll take it," she said. Jack and Megan split the cost of the room, then took their Pokémon and walked off with the card key. They found the room.

    "Number 57. Here it is," Jack said. He put the card in and opened the door. The room was small, with a bed on each side and a TV on a cabinet across from the door. Jack took off his backpack and set it on his bed. Static jumped up on the bed and started bouncing.

    <Come on up Sceadon. This is fun!> Static said, doing a front flip and landing on his butt.

    <My tail will catch the bed on fire. I'd rather not do that.> Sceadon said, looking at Static skeptically.

    Megan put her side bag on her bed and took looked around. They had a small bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower in the corner. Chlora the Chikorita jumped up onto her trainer's bed and started jumping. Megan picked up her bag and walked into the bathroom. "I'm going to brush my teeth and change," she told Jack, closing the bathroom door.

    Jack grunted a response and turned on the TV. He sat on the end of his bed and pulled his socks and shoes off. He began flipping through channels and noticed that the news channel was doing a report on beginning trainers. The camera was scanning the room Jack had been in earlier that day, and the reporter was talking about the systems used in the registration office.

    "Megan, come here! I'm going to be on TV!" Jack called. He turned the volume up so he could here it better over the pouring rain outside. Jack heard the sink run, and then turn off. Megan came out of the bathroom with her pajama pants on and a t-shirt. She sat on her bed and put her bag on the floor at the foot of the bed.

    Here I am," Jack said. The camera moved to face Jack.

    "Hey, look over here. Could it be? Why, it is! This young man has chosen a shining starter! As many of you know, shining Pokémon are incredibly rare and are hardly ever seen. Shining Pokémon, or alternate-colored Pokémon, are Pokémon with altered genetic coding that results in an off-colored appearance. Some species have few differences, while others, such as the Charmander family, are drastically different from their ordinary species. Also, they radiate an immense amount of energy during evolution. Ten times more than ordinary Pokémon. Let's find out what the new owner of this shining Pokémon has to say." The reporter took his camera crew over to Jack.

    "Well, young man. How do you feel about obtaining this incredibly rare Pokémon?"

    Jack picked up Sceadon from the floor. "What is the question?"

    "I said how do you feel about obtaining this incredibly rare Pokémon?"

    "Um, well, er, it is good, I guess. I mean, even if Charmander's shining, he is still a Pokémon, right?"

    "Well, uh, I suppose, but this is not something that happens every day. In the history of the Pokémon league, only seventeen other shining starters have been given. It has been over half a century and only seventeen. Six were Charmanders. How do you suppose your friends and family will feel about this?"

    "No further comment." Jack said suddenly. He snatched the Pokédex that the employee with crooked teeth had placed on the counter, and then proceeded out of the room.

    "Well, the boy doesn't seem to like being in the spotlight. Oh well. Not everyone is outgoing." The reporter turned to the lady that had registered Jack. "Excuse me, ma'am. Did you happen to get that boy's name?"

    "Oh, um, yes, as a matter of fact I did," she said, looking flustered and making sure her hair was in place. "His name was Jack Allen Surge."
    Jack abruptly stood up and turned off the TV.

    "What's wrong?" Megan asked sweetly.

    "National television. Now my parents know where I am."

    "What's wrong with your parents knowing where you are?" Megan asked, looking confused.

    Jack swallowed. He would have to tell her. "Megan," he started, sitting on his bed again. "I ran away from home. My parents didn't know where I went."

    Megan gasped. "You ran away? Why?"

    "My father is a jerk. He… wouldn't let me follow my dream. He doesn't understand. I never fit in with other people. You have to understand me Megan. I have only had one human friend in my entire life, and he moved a long time ago. After that, I felt lost. But then, I found my dream. To become a Pokémon breeder. To raise Pokémon to their full potential; that is my dream. If I must do gym battles, so be it. If I must capture every single Pokémon known, I will do it. Whatever it takes to gain the title of a famous Breeder, I will do it." Jack realized he was shaking a bit when he finished.

    Megan came over and sat down next to him. "I'll help you. To achieve your goal."

    Jack looked at her. "Thank you." She gave him a hug, then let go and blushed a bit. Static and Chlora had stopped bouncing and Sceadon had been watching quietly. The scene felt a bit sad, with everyone quiet and the rain pouring down outside.

    Jack stood up and grabbed his backpack. "I'm going to change." He walked into the bathroom and closed the door. He changed into his plaid pajama bottoms and took out his toothbrush. While he was brushing his teeth, Megan called from outside.

    "Jack! I found a fire resistant blanket in the cabinet for Scea—"

    BOOM!

    Megan was cut off by the thunder. "Megan? Are you alright?" Jack said when he didn't hear anything.

    "…Yeah, I-I'm fine," Megan said in an odd voice. Jack stuffed his tooth brush and tooth paste back in his pack, then opened the door. Megan sat in her bed with the covers pulled up to her chin.

    Jack dropped his bag and switched the bed lamp on and the main light off. Then he climbed into bed. Static lay next to him, already asleep. Sceadon lay on the fire resistant blanket on the floor at the foot of the bed. Chlora was asleep next to Megan. Jack looked out the window above the TV as the lighting flashed, then thunder roared.

    "Lightning is amazing, isn't it?" he said to Megan, not taking his eyes off the window. Another flash lit the entire room, and then thunder followed. "It is a bit intimidating, but it is neat to see it at night, lighting up the entire sky. I've always enjoyed watching thunderstorms. How about you?" Jack looked over to Megan. She was trembling a bit and he eyes were puffy.

    The lightning flashed again and Megan flinched, tears dripping down her cheeks.

    "Megan…" Jack started, but was cut off by a loud boom. Megan yelped and pulled the blanket over her head.

    "Megan, what's wrong?" Jack asked, getting out of bed. He put his hand on Megan's covered head and said, "Is it the storm?"

    The lightning flashed again, and thunder followed. As soon as the thunder roared, Megan leapt out of the bed and hugged Jack close, shaking and crying. Jack awkwardly hugged her back, but she just cried into his chest. "It's scary. It's scary," she cried. Jack sat down on her bed and Megan sat in his lap, still holding him.

    "It's alright, Megan. We're safe," he comforted, stroking her hair. He had only known her for less than a day but already felt protective of her. She was shaking with terror. Jack realized what was wrong. She must have astraphobia. Fear of lightning. He held he in his arms as she cried, shaking like a scared puppy.

    She stayed in his arms until the storm passed, which wasn't for another two hours. She fell asleep in Jack's arms when it had started to die down, and Jack gently lay her down in her bed. He pulled the blanket over her and stood up straight.

    "Good night, Megan," he said softly, then lay down in his own bed, falling asleep within seconds.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    At three in the morning, Jack was woken by a buzzing sound coming from his backpack. Groggily, he reached for the zipper and opened it up. Propping himself up on his arm, Jack flipped open his cell phone and answered.
    "Hello? Who his it?" he asked in a tired voice.
    "Jack? Are you safe?" Flint's voice asked. He sounded worried.
    "Yes, why?" Jack said.
    "You still have that Charmander?"
    "Yeah…"
    "If you value your life, you have to get away from Viridian. Now."
    End Chapter Three.
    Sorry for taking so long to get this one up. And thanks for the review, Bay!
    Great job so far! I like the story and am impressed by how well you write. I only noticed a few spelling mistakes. Keep up the good work! I want to read more! :)
    Sorry guys, I think I'm going to discontinue this fic here on PC. I don't have enough time to keep track of reviews on two different forums at the same time with all the stuff in real life I'm dealing with. I'll continue posting on SPPf, but until I'm done, I'll stay there.
    If you want to read more, I guess you have to go to serebii. Sorry again.
