    [PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon LazyGreen: a simple hack for lazy people!

    Do you want to play FireRed/LeafGreen but are too lazy to search for cheats alternatives to save time? Do you want to catch 'em all without needing to trade between games? Are you tired of seeing Chansey fleeing from you after 200 encounters in Safari Zone? Do you want to nuzlocke, but don't want to overlevel and also don't want to monitor your levels each two fights? Or do you want to play a Ground Monotype Challenge without seeing a Rattata in every route?

    Play Pokémon LazyGreen, a version of FireRed/LeafGreen with QoL updates to make your life easier.

    FEATURES:
    • Easy to grind (one fight equals 1 to 3 levels);
    • Level cap tied to the lowest level ace pokémon of the remaining bosses (but you can change level cap to lowest mon pokemon from remaining bosses. Just talk to the NPC in Route 2 near Pewter City);
    • Trade evolutions are gone, you can use Linking Cord available in Celadon Department Store;
    • All three starters are available: you can pick Charmander in Route 24, Bulbasaur in Cerulean and Squirtle in Vermilion;
    • IVs on stats screen;
    • EVs obtained in battle are deactivated. A NPC in Pallet can activate to work just like the regular game. Also, Vitamins in Celadon are cheaper and EV reducing berries are available (is it time for Pomeg Glitch?). Once you reach in Celadon, you have full control over your EVs;
    • Badge Boost. You can choose whether you want or not. Default settings is off, but a NPC in Pewter can activate just in time to you enjoy the boost from first badge;
    • Most items cost way less than they used to cost. And if you still need money, Pay Day gives you 500 times the normal amount it would give;
    • You can force Hidden Power, Return and Frustration to have maximum power. Also, you don't need to test Hidden Power around Kanto, summary menu will show what type it is;
    • Meowth ability Pick Up can only collect Hidden Power TM. Which is also available to buy in Celadon if you don't want a Meowth in your party;
    • Every exclusive version pokémon available. For example, Vulpix and Growlithe are both available in LazyGreen. Check documentation to see what routes changed in relation to regular game;
    • Infinite Eevees in Celadon. You can have a team full of Vaporeons;
    • Safari Zone redesigned. Every rare pokémon got its odds to find increased. Also, every area is connected to each other;
    • You can buy all TMs in Celadon according to your progress;
    • A NPC help you reuse every move tutor in the game;
    • Emerald and XD tutors available;
    • Coins are cheaper, as well prizes in Casino. You can buy Pinsir and Scyther using less coins;
    • Shiny odds are 5%. If you want an all shiny squad, it will take way less time;
    • You can get cross generation evolution: it's possible to use Espeon or Crobat before beat the first E4;
    • Items that maximize IVs;
    • There's a way to make all gen2 pokémons available on post-game;
    • Monotype mode! Two styles available: one with only gen1 available in main game and gen2 available on post-game, and one with all pokémons from gen1 to gen3 available;
    • And if you're not looking for vanilla gameplay: a NPC in Route 2 can activate Challenge Mode specially for you!

    If you want to play vanilla FireRed, just ignore everything that's not featured in FireRed (ignore Vulpix, ignore HP power, ignore TMs that aren't purchasable, ignore excessive shinies, etc) and play as regular FireRed.

    This hack doesn't have any fancy stuff (no physical special split, gen4+ mons, etc). This is supposed to make it easier for those that want to play vanilla FireRed.

    Everything was done using pret. Also a special thank you for users from pret discord, they helped to solve most of my difficults in understanding how decomps work.

    Patch and documentation: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JgXv-my7ps1nC4fqGeIVQUVpYS7rS-fT - the folder contains the file with current patch and a spreadsheet with the most important changes (routes, level cap, challenge mode, etc).

    Use a v1.0 FireRed version (1636 Squirrels) to patch. If a Snorlax appears in the Oak speech instead of a Nidoran, then the patch worked.

    Please let me know if you find any bugs.

    This sounds real fun! I'm gonna try it and play on challenge mode

    Edit: so uhhh, I think I found a bug. After beating rival 2 (Cerulean rival), the level cap increases to 16. Except it was 15 before that and it seems to never increase past 16. I beat Misty and yet didn't get experience from any battle afterwards. Tried clearing Bill, then the Cerulean rocket and nothing happens. Got to the SS. Anne and it's still the same.

    Nevermind, I just read the doc. So uhh, why in the post says that level cap is tied to the gym leaders lowest level pokémon when it's not actually the case?

    level cap is tied to next major boss, which includes Rival and Giovanni fights.

    if we raise the cap after Misty to 18 or 20, there was a possibility that the player would get naturally too overpowered for S.S. Anne fight, since it would imply access to more evolutions. however, considering there are lots of Rare Candies, nothing prevents the player from going to the level he wants.

    I, personally, would go to one pokémon level 20, one level 19, one level 18 and one level 16, to match all pokemons from Rival. that way I can't evolve everyone on my team (starter, Magikarp, Pidgey, Spearow, Rattata, Nidorans, I can't use them all evolved doing this way, I need to pick carefully who I want to evolve). any cap higher than 16 prevents the player from doing this fight in these conditions.

    updates!

    1) a NPC in Route 2 can change the level cap. instead of lowest level pokemon from remaining bosses, you can change to lowest level ace from remaining bosses. Brock would become 14 instead of 12, Misty would become 20 instead 18, and so on;

    2) a NPC in Route 22 can give you items to maximize IVs. However, there's a catch: you need to beat his random team;

    3) a NPC in Celadon can temporarily gives access to cross generation evolution before E4. Talk to her and it will have a limited time to evolve your pokemons such as Golbat or Porygon2.

    Any chance of getting a copy without shiny odds increased?
    I was hoping to if i randomly run into one i can transfer to my vanilla cart

    P.s. i love the idea behind this and i am going to give it a go!

    I am really enjoying this romhack. I've been playing a nuzlocke on my sp using ez flash omega. Just beat misty in challenge mode.

    The update patch says momentarily cross gen evolution -- Does the evolution disappear after battle or something?

    Heads up, the "challenge" mode in this mainly throws you against much higher level Evasion / ParaFusion tactics and is a bore to play against. Shame too, It's so close to being a blast. Lots of great features while still feeling "Vanilla".

    I phrase that poorly, sorry.

    your evolution won't disappear after battle. what will disappear is your permission to evolve a mon.

    for example, you can talk to the NPC, evolve Golbat by giving a Rare Candy or evolve a Eevee by giving a Sun Stone. after evolution, both Crobat and Espeon will be available until the end of the game with no major issues.

    regarding much higher level: you can blame on me on not express myself better on how to deal with level cap.

    level cap wasn't supposed to be "this is the limit, don't cross", but more like "the game will take you until level x, from now, it's your choice on what to do". you don't have to play on the level cap. there are several spots with multiple candies, you are free to choose the level you want (as long you don't cross obedience level, which is at least 3 levels highers than the next ace pokemon).

    ---

    regarding evasion tactics: I think it's worth to divide this into evasion boost and accuracy drops moves (which I think deserves separate analysis).

    1) evasion boost moves actually got lower on challenge mode in comparison with vanilla FireRed.

    Surge remains with both Pikachu and Raichu with Double Team. Raichu may be tough to deal because of Wish and I'll admit that, but I don't think most players have trouble with Pikachu more than they used to have in Vanilla FireRed. for Raichu, we have the advantage that he can't hit Ground mons (he does not have Quick Attack anymore).

    Erika got Clefable with Minimize. however, Erika team is very easy, even in Challenge Mode. that Clefable is there to check Fire and Flying mons the player could use. we have Parasect with Aerial Ace, Arcanine with Odor Sleuth (Arcanine outspeeds and doesn't die to Water Pulse crit) or Butterfree with Stun Spore (Butterfree has at least 50% of outspeed without using vitamins). and probably there are more solutions, those were the one I figured in 5 minutes, I'm sure there are more. we have one copy of Aerial Ace and Shock Wave from original game, and infinite copies in Celadon if we're using resources from LazyGreen.

    Raichu and Clefable may be tough, but definitely they are doable.

    Koga remains with his Muk with Minimize, no changes here.

    Agatha lost both mons that could use Double Team (Gengar on first E4 and Arbok in Rematch) and Lorelei lost Dewgong with Double Team from rematch. we added Clefable with Minimize but dropped Gengar, Arbok and Dewgong. that's -2 on pokemons with evasion moves.

    ---

    2) accuracy drops moves got a little more. Rival from Pokemon Tower has the same number of accuracy moves in two fights (vs. Wartortle and vs. Charmeleon) and received an extra in the fight vs. Ivysaur.

    Rival from Silph is probably the most annoying fight in this regarding. both Pidgeot and Alakazam have Sand-Attack and Kinesis respectively, they don't normally have in vanilla FireRed.

    Magmar from Blaine has Smokescreen, Venomoth from Sabrina has Flash, and Rival from Route 22 got two extras.

    and we have 5 pokemons with Bright Powder. no pokemon with Bright Powder uses a Evasion or Accuracy move.

    and that's it. we have 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 5 = 12 mons with Sand-Attack/Kinesis/Mud-Slap/Smokescreen/Flash or Bright Powder. that represents 12/130 = 10% of pokemons added with accuracy move. Kinesis from Alakazam may be tough because Alakazam usually is the faster mon, but at least Kinesis has 80% of accuracy. besides, we have more ways to deal in comparison to evasion boost moves: Keen Eye ability, switching/pivoting pokemons, infinite copies of Aerial Ace and Shock Wave, and so on.

    ---

    3) regarding parafusion (and paraflinch), we have:

    Staryu and Starmie from Misty (Thunder Wave + Water Pulse), Gyarados from Rival Silph (Bite + Thunder Wave), Nidoqueen and Nidoking from Giovanni Silph (Body Slam + Rock Slide), Hypno from Sabrina (Swagger + Thunder Wave), Lapras from Lorelei (Body Slam + Confuse Ray), Slowbro from Lorelei Rematch (Headbutt + Thunder Wave) and Tyranitar from Champion Rematch (Rock Slide + Thunder Wave).

    9 appearances in 130 pokemons from Challenge Mode. I know it's not very fun to face this kind of strategy, but they appear in 9/130 = 7% of pokemons added in Challenge Mode. I think Staryu and Starmie might be the most boring because of the lack of berries (we can only buy in Vermilion). but T-Wave with Water Pulse isn't guaranteed to parafusion. for the rest, we have at least one berry to use and nulify their first move if they choose to inflict status on us.

    I understand feeling bored playing against evasion/parafusion. but, I wouldn't define Challenge Mode with mainly being an evasion/parafusion strategy. I count 21 instances in 130 pokemons, that's 16%. unless we are restricting ourselves from using stuff (by nuzlocking or monotyping or whatever reason), we have plenty of options to counter.

    also, there's very little we can do without changing AI behavior, which I wouldn't change in this project for two reasons: I don't have enough knowledge to do (lol), but even if I did, the game is supposed to be vanilla FireRed with some QoL updates. modify AI, even little bugs that are easy to fix (for example, pokemons ignoring Safeguard effects), were out of question.

    ---

    I'm sorry Challenge Mode isn't more refined. but he was never the focus of the project, that's a little extra (which could be better, I agree). if the player is looking for a difficult hackrom (perhaps with more stuff like physical/special split or megas), LazyGreen definitely is not the answer for that.

    update!

    • Monotype mode available! talk to you mom before talk to Prof Oak. check documentation to see which pokémon you can catch in which route;
    • HMs deletable. talk to a NPC in Vermilion City near Fanclub and you will be able to erase HM;
    • All gen2 pokémons available on post-game: talk to a NPC in Four Island and all encounter ratings will be changed. you can catch all 251 pokémons;
    • Emerald and XD tutors available! talk to a NPC in Viridian City (near Dream Eater tutor). answering Yes to his question will activate four tutors around Kanto;
    • "EZCATCH": you don't type ezcatch here, but if you talk again with the old man from tutorial, you can catch anyone by using one Poké Ball.

    Is there anyway in this hack to get special pokemons like lugia and deoxys? I dont see them mentioned in the docs.

    I beat the main story, but Cerulean Cave was still inaccessible. How do I unlock Cerulean Cave? Do I need to catch all the other 140 Pokemon?

    You need 60 pokes caught, go talk to Oak, complete the Sevii side quest, and then it will be accessible. If its not, challenge the E4 a second time and then it should unlock.
