Darkness shrouded the air. It had reached the point where Trent could no longer see anything. The only thing that was guiding him at this point was his companion Bulbasaur, who occasionally nudged his in the proper direction. In the backdrop Trent could hear the frantic movement and commotion of all the pokemon that resided in the forest. It seemed as if all of them were headed in their direction. Trying to not be further worried than he was Trent attempted to only follow his pokemon's orders. This proved to be the hardest part of his journey as he couldn't seem to abandon the negative emotions and thoughts that seemed to be plaguing his mind. Will I live, am I going to be attacked, will I see any of the other students. All these thoughts in his head were accompanied by many more. It was starting to drive him mad, every step felt the same as the last, every sound identical to the previous, not to mention his lack of vision. It was as if he had been completely separated from his body. Sure he may have been moving forward but all he could really do was think and that only made the anxiety he was feeling far worse than it was. "I can't take it anymore!" screamed Trent throwing himself to the floor. Tears started to run down his cheeks revealing is peachy skin from under the layer of ash. "I….I just can't do it." He whimpered repeatedly pounding his fists into the ground. His Bulbasaur attempted to console him by nudging him. It was a failed effort as the trainer now layed there motionless tears running down his face just as the stream they were following had. Trent's mind was in a bad place he didn't want to believe what was happening to him, he didn't even feel this way when he was stuck on the sinking ship.
It was then that Trent began to think about his family, and living in their happy town. His camping trips with his father also crossed his mind. He was tall and had long black hair down to his shoulders and a fluffy beard that gave him a warm appearance. He thought of the day when he and his father were stuck in a cave together. He remembered the comfort he had just knowing that someone else in that moment cared about him and wanted to make sure he was protected. His father then pulled out his pokeball and released a powerful pokemon that looked like a giant rock with arms and legs. It was a golem that then started to hurl the rocks blocking the cave out of the way with ease. All the while his father sat with him very calmly arm around his shoulder. "As long as you have a companion Trent, nothing should stop you when faced with hard times." His father said softly under the sound of crashing rocks. "You just need to remember that you can do anything you set your mind to. And when you feel like he can't keep going just take a second to think about everything you have and will accomplish if you make it though." With that a bright light shone though the entrance to the cave signifying that they were safe. Recalling this event caused the tears on Trent's face to stop flowing. He sniffed up the mucus that had started to run down his nose and wiped his face covering it with more soot from his sleeves.
"Bulba, Bulbasaur!" cried the pokemon biting its trainer to get his attention. Trent still not being able to fully see in the darkness of the fog simply tried to listen to what his pokemon was implying. In the distance he heard an extremely large crash. It must have been the wave reaching the land. From the sound it didn't seem like he had too much more time to waste wallowing in sorrow. AS he stood the ground began to shake. It was different from an Earthquake as it continued to do so rhythmically. Before he had time to react to the situation a giant vine wrapped around his body and lifted him several feet into the air. Screaming Trent squirmed trying to release himself. Each time he moved however the grip on him got tighter
"Venusaur!" roared the pokemon. The mighty grass type pokemon took several paces forward to where Trent was just standing. From the sound of it, there had to be at least 4 other pokemon following the giant. Trent gathered it had to be other evolutions of Bulbasaur. They must have heard Bulbasaur and reacted to it as if it were being attacked.
"Bulbasaur, bulba bulba, saur!" barked the boy's pokemon at the Vanusaur, trying to defend its trainer once again. Trent couldn't tell from before but his Bulbasaur cared for him greatly to stand up against a clan of its own peers. Even in the face of such danger.
"Venusaur! Saur!" roared the mighty pokemon lowering Trent out of the air and onto what felt like the top of the pokemon's head. Not even a minute later Trent felt the familiar nudge from his side. His Bulbasaur somehow convinced the pokemon to help them find their way out of the forest. Trent held his pokemon tightly overwhelmed with joy. The Venusaur then used two vines and began to spin them causing a gust of wind to blow. The cloud of ash that had covered the area was blowing away and revealed the dark forest that they had been travelling in. Trent looked down at his hands which now were blacker than a starless sky. It seemed to have been ages since he had last seen them. He then looked over to his pokemon companion to see he too was covered in soot.
"You know, you really deserve a name after all of this you know" said the trainer, his pokemon smiling back at him. "Your new name is Buddy. Is that okay?" the pokemon jumped into his trainer's lap which was a sure enough sign that it approved. The Venusaur then broke out into a steady trot covering more gournd than they possibly could have in these conditions. Behind them four pokemon with dark blue skin and what looked like a rose on its back. The bud was surrounded by big green pedals. Trent recognized them as Ivysaur from when he studied up on his choices for starter pokemon. Happy that they were now making progress Trent began to feel calm; like his father was back then.
