Prince, Route 22 Part III
Now he was irritated and incredibly so, but he refused to let the emotion get the better of him. A strong trainer - and to some extent, a person too - would always be cool and calm and generally at a higher level than everyone else (he had the third one down at least). Prince continued through the grass, part looking for Pokémon and part wondering why he still wasn't hungry. The fact that he had fallen asleep out of boredom negated the notion of tiredness, especially as he felt as fresh as he had done the previous day, though maybe he'd take a bath soon just for personal comfort.
"Spear!" Another Pokémon appeared in front of him, Pidgey's uglier yet just-as-weak counterpart. Prince shook his head in disdain and wordlessly sent Smoochum out, the baby psychic type addressing her opponent with her usual enthusiasm.
"Lick is out of the question here," he nodded sagely. "So use Sweet Kiss!" As expected, Spearow lifted off as Smoochum began moving. Prince followed up with: "Jump into the air!" no sooner had it flapped its wings. Her lips pursed, Smoochum made an amusing sight as she sprung upward, though Spearow was more accustomed to the air than she was and had the capability to manoeuvre. However, it was not high enough to perform anything elegant and Smoochum's momentum as gravity took hold of her caused the two to collide, Smoochum all but on top of Spearow as they landed in the grass.
"Smoooooo!" she chirped, part pleased with herself, part dazed from her own collateral damage. She giggled a little, getting up and prodding the seemingly unconscious bird.
"Don't prod it, Pound it," Prince urged. She poked it a second time, but with a lot more force - Spearow continued to remain on the ground unmoving. He released a sigh, recalled his Pokémon and moved on. It seemed that Smoochum was so eager to please him that she went a little bit overboard at times, perhaps he had to - he shuddered - start praising her? But at the same time, he did not want to instil her with a sense of false hope and have her start underperforming... This was a little more complicated than other Pokémon games he had played, for Smoochum was akin to a living, breathing thing. He was used to sprites that moved a little bit, followed you around on the overworld if you were playing HeartGold or SoulSilver, not something like her. He thought back to Chloe and her Chinchou and how he'd been shocked by the dual type - that was advanced programming if any, like a VI that attached itself to a trainer. Though here it was plausible that they used AIs...
He halted, suddenly, accidentally kicking something on the ground in front of him. He prepared his best glower, ready to berate the rock or whatnot had scuffed his designer shoes, but the expression morphed into one of confusion. What was she doing here? More importantly, why was she taking a nap?
Prince instinctively took a step back when he saw Chinchou, wondering if this was a trap of sorts - even though Chloe was definitely the type to be harmless (unless she was a very good actress). Smoochum seemed to be aware of the situation, or at least him stopping, for there was a short burst of light and then her appearance.
"Smoo!" she gasped, tottering over and poking Chloe, gently.
"No, get--" he left his sentence broken, now staring at the girl. Smoochum nodded earnestly, moving her hair out of the way and leaning down to rest her head against her neck. "Since when were Pokémon able to check for signs of life?" he murmured to himself. "So what? She's alive. Let's leave her here and get on with our training."
"SMOOCHUM!" was the sharp cry he received in response and she even stomped her foot down on the ground. She was the least threatening thing ever (aside from the girl on the ground, perhaps), but for some reason Prince felt obliged to comply to her wishes. And perhaps, deep down, he didn't want to leave her there. He was an ass, it was true, and some could even argue he was heartless. Then he realised, if he saved her life, he could exploit that fact and use it against her in some way. Okay, so perhaps 'saving her life' was a little redundant, considering she was (according to Smoochum) still breathing.
"Fine, fine. There's a bit of shade back there, where we just passed," he jabbed a finger in the appropriate direction. With a sigh he reluctantly folded his parasol down and left it with his briefcase. Prince flexed his knees, rolled Chloe so she would be easier to pick up and then took her into his arms. She was lighter than he expected, and kinda soft too. He'd never really been around girls because the ones at home were not good enough for him, though he was far too superior to have those types of feelings towards the one in his arms. Despite her light weight, he staggered a little bit, his limbs just as frail as his in the real world. Eventually, he managed to get within the shade and placed her down against a tree, propping her up so as not to dirty her clothes even more. His arms felt relieved and he shook them gently.
"Smoochum," his Pokémon nodded contently; she had been bringing up the rear and Prince now noticed that Chinchou and another creature had been following them - a female Nidoran. It didn't seem like it was going to attack her, so maybe it was one of those docile ones that were stupid and weak enough to follow humans around even if they weren't part of their team (or annoying, like Jigglypuff in the anime series). He had no need for one like that, not to mention he was sure there were male Nidoran somewhere - Nidoking would be a very apt addition to his team.
"Let's go," he said quietly, knowing that now he would have to spend time re-doing his nails and probably his hair. His skin was tingling, probably from the sunlight it had been exposed to.
"Smoochum," the purple one nodded to Chinchou and Nidoran, giving them an apologetic smile. "Smoo, smoo smoo. Smoochum!" ("Hope she gets better soon!")
"Smoochum, quit fraternising."
She had no idea what that word meant, but could tell by his tone that it would be unwise to linger. She bade them both farewell and skittered after him, as best her stubby legs allowed her to anyhow. Chinchou and Nidoran were very worried about the pretty girl, and she knew that if the same thing happened to Prince, she would be very worried too. However, something in the back of her mind was curious to know if he would have left her there had she not insisted. Prince was grumpy, yes, but he wasn't cruel, was he?
Meanwhile, Prince had collected his belongings and immediately put the parasol back up. A sigh of relief followed the habitual twirling and, without looking back, he continued in the direction in which they had been walking. The scenery did not change much, nor did the amount of grass around his feet. Once in a while he would stop and let Smoochum catch up, and it seemed as if this were his punishment for her making him do something nice.
"Smoo... smoo..." she panted on the fourth or fifth occasion, and Prince decided it was time to stop.
"Okay," he said as he took out her Pokéball. "Re--" He was interrupted by a rustle in front of him, and then a slightly deeper (if it were possible to describe it as that), "Ni ni!".
"On second thought, attack that Nidoran!" he cried. She was very fatigued, but as always she wanted to do her best for him. Standing opposite her was a pinkish creature with large ears and bucked teeth. Maybe he would become her friend and comrade, or maybe he would faint or run away. What was important was that she didn't do anything reckless, lest Prince be even more angry at her.
Nidoran moved first, every one of his muscles tensing and his eyes narrowing. Prince did not recognise the move and took out his Pokédex for perhaps the first time.
[Nidoran (male) attacks with different moves to its female counterpart. Often it will charge up with Focus Energy at the start of the fight and use Peck to defeat its opponents.] He read, and instantly knew that Sweet Kiss was out of the picture. The last thing he wanted was for it to KO itself, so he would have to go with a Lick and Pound combo (not to mention she had no ranged attacks).
"Careful," he warned. "Don't attack it head-on and watch out for its horn!"
"Smoo," she nodded, adjusting her stance and preparing for the next strike. It didn't take long for Nidoran to charge forward.
"Dodge it then counter!"
Smoochum twirled out of harm's way, rendering Nidoran to brake harshly. Dirt sprayed into the air, and Smoochum returned to deliver a sharp Pound across his flank. Nidoran was quicker to recover than she anticipated, however, and spun around to glower at her. She shuddered, and Prince knew that - if he wasn't careful - one Peck attack could take her out completely.
"Don't let it intimidate you: keep up what I told you to do and you'll be okay! Just remember how many Pokémon you've defeated before!"
Yes, there had been several encounters and she hadn't lost yet. If there was ever a time to make him praise her, now would be it. Nidoran was backing up, and both trainer and Pokémon sensed that it was going to charge again. This time, Smoochum took the initiative and dodged, immediately spinning around and running after Nidoran so as it turned to attack her again, her arm met with his face.
"Pokéball, go!" Prince yelled, tossing an empty Pokéball towards Nidoran. The red light engulfed him and the ball landed. Now it was just a matter of whether Smoochum had done enough damage...
