I'm looking into doing some research on the Pokemon phenomenon, particularly the Pokegods of the first generation, and I was wondering if anyone from a country other than the US, especially those not English-speaking, knew anything about the Pokegods.

Japan is my biggest concern, since so far I'm only able to turn up that the Pokegods were an American aspect of the fandom. Any links to non-English sites, or stories, rumours, etc. would be really helpful.

You know here in England no one ever spoke about Pokégods, I mean I heard the odd story of Venatoise and Pikablu and everyone knew about Missingno. but they all thought it broke their games if they caught it. But I think the Pikablu etc stories just came from american websites.

What the heck is a Venatoise, I heard of Pikablu but never Venatoise, is that an European thing or something?

It's an illusion created by Ghastly in The Ghost of Maiden's Peak.

Venustoise was an imagined fusion of Venusaur and Blastoise, seen in the anime episode The Ghost of Maiden's Peak. Some people thought that since it was in the anime, and the anime was official, that it must have been real. Others just treated it as a joke, and satirically created rumours to find it to play off the many other rumours that were also stupid, but were believed.

Rich Boy Rob's post shows the difference between the relative attitudes of different Countries, even if they speak the same language. Being from the US, there were hundred of kids at my elementary school who made up things solely to either a)Impress or b)Deceive others constantly.

Very Rarely do you get deceived like that from a Japanese Source. It's always the English ones made by Americans :/

What the crap is a pokegod?

They were omnipotent Pokemon rumoured to exist during Pokemon's highest moment in Popularity(1st Gen).

Everyone back then thought there were things like Nidogod(Nidoking Evolution), Nidogoddess(Nidoqueen Evolution), Charcoal(Charizard Evolution), Mewthree, ect

These false rumors were mostly found in the US and Canada.

    We're talking about the 1st gen here, not 4th. -_-;
Since my thread was kinda reopened, I'd like to take this opportunity to say that any help would still be appreciated. Whether kids believed in Pokegods in Mexico, Canada, or Japan, or anywhere else would be useful.

The only PokeGods I ever heard of were Pikablu and Mewthree. If I'm right, the Pikablu fiasco came into focus after Marrill appeared on the anime before any news of a second generation had been released, so I guess rumours should have been expected. Mewthree was a popular belief though, and there were a lot of fake guides put up on the internet instructing you how to catch one. I fell for a few, then realized Mewthree didn't exist. That's all I can give this thread, sorry :x

I thought they just weren't real? Most pokemon miths arn't. Of course I could be wrong, that happens often.

Almost all of them are real for one reason or another.

If anyone's interested, I started this thread because I'm working on an article concerning the Pokegods with a friend. Should be up and updated often enough over the next weekend, but any new information would still help out. A lot.

I recall that there was a "Dark Lugia" rumor over here in Poland.

Of course, that was long before XD. That rumor pertained to GSC. It is very old.

That would be very, very interesting if we could document that.

Do you recall how it went or any variations of it? (Actually, since you're in Poland even rumours about Pikablu or Mewthree would be interesting to know, since it'd be evidence that they spread over there too. Or maybe began there?)
