I was always a bit disappointed with Ash in the anime since he really didn't make a serious attempt at "cathing 'em all" despite the slogan being in the theme song and all. Or, he was just really bad at it :P
But the catch 'em all thing was to encourage people to go out and trade with their friends and complete the pokédex. Pokémon has always been a strangely social game. Especially after the introduction of wifi functions. I think it was a good slogan for the first generations of pokémon. Nowadays it's a bit atrocious, haha. But, Kalos includes almost every kind of pokémon, so... ;)
