Thanks for removing the location ;). Well, I as I said, I wrote to Nintendo about the French names. I told them it'd be better if they used the English names on French cards. It wouldn't cause any trouble with the law since names are not in a certain language per se... I wish it had been made like that. After all, when the anime still aired in French the names were in English.
No prob :)
I bet a lot of fans are ticked off for the same reason - it was the Quebecois dub of the anime that probably started the whole thing. But I bet as it is, if they broadcasted Pokemon in French in Quebec again, they'd just import the Best Wishes dub from France, pretend that Ash was always called "Sacha", and bring the whole business full circle (since there's no need to keep the English names anymore for marketing). Imagine if they had a Kanto toy McDonald's promotion next year or something - the new BW Pokémon are bad enough, but it would be a pretty big slap in the face for a lot of nostalgic Francophone fans if they get a Bulbasaur toy that says "Bulbizarre" on the polybag with the French text and comes with a French "Roucool" (Pidgey) card >.<
On a related note, a RSEmake (as mentioned above) or Kanto toy promotion would be awesome if they decided to "expand" the Pokémon collection like with the Beanie Babies and Neopets promotions. I could imagine one with the Kanto starters, Mewtwo, Mew, Victini shoehorned in, and maybe Pikachu again and/or Charizard, it'll be Burger King 1999 all over again. Nostalgia FTW ;)
Oh yeah, btw Swoobat's French name is
Rhinolove. (Click the link, second row, first and second columns...)
What I find interesting was that Reshiram and Pikachu were first for the place my family works too...I wonder if that's intentional.
Anyway, to add to your Sandile/Snivy story, my sister came home from work a few days ago saying "I got Bidoof!" I was like "...what?" She meant Oshawott. xD;;
Yeah, Reshiram and Pikachu are supposed to be the first wave of toys, but some McD's are breaking the pattern (the one in the Toronto, for example, which is having the Zekrom and Tepig wave).
Really? Bidoof? It's that well-known? Heh, when I called up the Toronto location they mistook Tepig for Pikachu, seems like Pika's not the only one that has people mistaking other Pokémon for it. Lucky Bidoof :P
