Pokemon designs are getting better in my opinion.

I think every single new pre-evo and evo from DP is awesome.

I half agree with you there, but if it weren't for the topic name, i wouldn't understand.
some of the sprites are getting cooler(turtwig and piplup are awesome) but some are getting uglier at the same time(chimchar and carnivine).
every game had its share of uglies, but overall, most of the new designs(not the ones that stole first gen thunder) are pretty good.

I would have to agree that designs are getting better, but originality is lacking....

I don't understand the Bidoof hate. Sure, it's omnipresent, but so are Rattata and Poochyena. Bibarel seems like a generic starter wild, but it distinguishes itself with Super Fang (First Pokemon since Raticate to get it), Normal/Water typing, and Simple ability, and heck, it's better than the practically worthless starter Bugs.

But Rattata and Poochyena are only in some regions. Bidoofs? They're freaking everywhere. Sure Bibarel has some fancy moves, but that's not the Pokémon you get to start off with. You get it's predecessor and that Pokémon is annoying in my opinon.

I think designs are going downhill. The monsters are starting to look more akin to those out of Yu-Gi-Oh.
I personally like the Pokemon of the first and second generations best; they look more believeable as the Pokeworld's animals.

Bidoof only appears in Shinō. Rattata appears in both Kanto and Jōto, and apparently in two routes of Shinō.

I wouldn't say the designs are getting better, but they certainly aren't getting worse. There was never a point where I just sat down and said "These Pokemon designs suck lyk totally :[" or anything. But sure, there's the occasional one that is kinda... meh, but for the most part I think they've kept up the same quality as the first 150. So yeah, I really wouldn't say the designs are getting better, just not worse.

So I'm the only one who thinks the quality has gone DOWN?

To address the thing about sprites...they get better with each generation. The Salamence example shows that, but as far as pokemon design goes, I honestly think they've gotten worse.

Some of the pokemon that were designed I just don't get, especially in DP. Ever since GSC these poorly designed baby pokemon popped up, the worst being Happiny from DP imo. That thing is just...*shudders*

I'm honestly not impressed with Infernape or Torterra out of the DP starters, though I liked Empoleon's design. with DP, some I liked a lot (like Garchomp), and some I thought were just WAY off (like Happiny or Magmortar). Too inconsistent for me lol.

I actually think DP was probably a step up from RSE though, since a lot of tyhose pokemon were uninspiring to say the least.

There's no real right or wrong for this. I just thinnk that the original pokemon were of better quality as far as the design goes, and GSC (besides the unnecessary evos and stuff like Unown) was pretty good. After that, I think it dropped off a bit.

Eh, it could be worse though. Or I thought so until I saw Rotom's new forms? lol

EDIT: Oh and Rhyperior which is quite possibly the worst pokemon design I've ever witnessed.

Yup! I totally agreed, I really realy lik the sprites in DPPt more than in RSE. Although I prefer Platinum since most of the sprites there are better looking than in DP. (Look a Mismagius and Gallade)

Nah, They destroyed Pokemon After the Hoenn region. I hate sinnoh so much. That's the reason I don't play Diamond, pearl OR platinum. I wasn't excited when I heard Platinum is releasing. But Sister was GREATLY moved.

Infernape and Torterra, and Rhyperior...all awesome designs IMO, better than most anything from the first two gens.

Okay, I phrased that wrong. I meant routes, not regions.
Yes, Rattata appear in Kanto and Johto. They also appear in Sinnoh, but like you said, in 2 routes.
Bidoof is a D/P/P Pokémon but it is literally in every route that isn't sand, ash or water.

actually most of the grass routes i regularly train in don't have bidoofs/bibarel's...u must be training at the wrong places....

Bidoof is not in every route the only route i can remember seeing it was the first route.... so you just unlucky...

In my personal opinion, I would have to say the pokemon designs are getting better...The first and second generation pokemon were cool, but as we go more into it, there is always a need for difference. That is what the DPPt brought in, Difference. So, I would have to say I'm not disappointed with the new pokemon that came out in either the Hoenn or the Sinnoh.

did you guys see the sprite designs for Platinum? They're pretty good.

The one fault I find with the new designs is that they make certain sprites too busy. For example, the platinum Garchomp and DP/Pt Infernape sprites. In the latter case, by removing the armor ring around its middle (which in my and I think many others think doesn't help if it doesn't hinder the design) the sprite would look much less busy.

The best way to tell, though, if a design has been thoughtfully— and therefore objectively well-designed— produced is to see how they work in 3D space or animation. Infernape, Empoleon, and Torterra all look gorgeous in the anime/movies, as do reknowned pokémon designs such as Charizard and Pikachu.

I think the designs are fine the way they are. Different from the originals? Assuredly. But I don't think any are better than any others. I actually like how each region has a slightly different aesthetic from the others; it adds a sense of nativeity between the countries.
