[Other Question] Pokemon Essentials on linux

    Apologies if this has been asked before, but I'm trying to get started on pokemon essentials and my laptop uses linux, because of this I cant use the play button but was still able to create maps, add events, and run through the ,exe. I was trying to add a map connection, learned thats usually done through the debug menu but can be done by editing a text file, so attempted that instead as I cant access the debug menu. Then I learned that I cant compile text files without the debug menu, is there another way to compile? Has anyone managed to access the debug menu on linux? I cant find anything by searching so asking here
     
    Well, how are you running RPG Maker XP on your machine in the first place? Iirc it's not compatible out of the box with Linux so you need to run it through Wine one way or another. I'm partial to Bottles because it's really easy to use and add/remove/change dependencies as needed.
     
    I'm running rpgmaker itself through proton, then running the exe's through wine, but running it through proton hasnt been allowing me to actually run through the playtest button and access debug mode, are you able to when running via bottles?
     
    As someone also considering a switch to Linux, would it work flawlessly if we were to use a windows VM for essentials in order to avoid any incompatibilities?

    Sorry, I don't know. I'm playing other's projects with Bottles, I develop on MacOS with PortingKit. I'd recommend trying it yourself, or maybe playing around with Proton versions, maybe Proton GE. I don't see why it wouldn't work though. I can try it in some spare time maybe.

    So technically it would, but I unfortunately don't know much about VMs in Linux. The only problem I'd see is you might not get great performance when playing your game since VMs aren't really made for that. If you're unsure about switching to Linux I'd recommend a live CD version so you can try it out first. I wouldn't do anything performance-hungry things with it but you can get a feel for it ^^
     
    If you're on a newer version of Essentials, the game itself runs on mkxp-z, which has Linux builds as well.
    Though the last time I actively tried it was back in v19 with Ubuntu.
