"It would be good for you, even though I generally don't like you leaving. I decided maybe I should let you go off and do something on your own, it would do you better. Isn't that right?"
Lucy opened her mouth to reply to her mother, but got interrupted.
"Of course, of course! Now, I don't want you getting a dangerous Pokémon. I heard Magikarp is a splendid Pokémon, don't you think? Of course you do! I'm so excited, this will be marvelous!" Lucy's mother quickly walked down the hall and grabbed the telephone. "Yes, yes! No-- it's-- no… Let me talk! I must tell you…"
Lucy sighed and stared down at her soggy cereal. She wasn't too thrilled about getting a Pokémon and becoming a trainer. It involved work and talking to people. Lucy wasn't very committed to this. I want to find my-- THUMP! Lucy's mom walked away after dropping a heavy backpack onto the kitchen table in front of Lucy. Lucy looked at it in dismay and opened it. An escape rope, lunch, money, a book about manners... She made a face at the book, tossed it out and left the house without saying goodbye or eating her cereal. "Luuuuccccy darling I forgot to tell you--" Lucy's mother looked around the brightly lit kitchen. "Hmph. Anyway, Agnus," she continued to talk on the phone.
Lucy walked slowly along the dirt road to the Professor's lab. She pulled out her gold pocket watch, grimaced at the long hand pointing to the 9, and returned it to her pocket. She kicked a rock and watched it bounce toward the lab until it hit the door with a soft clang. Lucy opened the door and froze as she saw some other kids looking at the professor.
