I heard that evil comes disguised.
Wow, would Atton ever give these scientists a break?
It had been just a matter of a few minutes since Odette last communicated with Atton, and now the female was back at Thadeus' control room to receive intel on the Leo. There was a bored look on her face. She was getting tired. If she athat it was this hard to control a superpowered legendary warrior, she would've gone get the weapons herself. Not only that, but Atton acted more stubborn –and stupid– than what she could've ever imagined. Like, really, he was supposed to be stealth; but he had just thrown a tree up into the air, roots tangling a passing Pidgey. Odette stepped forward as the automatic door opened, warily walking towards Thadeus, who seemed impressed.
"Odette!" He yelped as he spun around his big chair, a very happy grin on his face. The many wrinkles and lines on his aged face were visible as the smile appeared. Without even waiting for some sort of retort from the lady, Thadeus spun again, motioning for Odette to come.
"What do you want, Thadeus…" Odette said in a monotonous tone, the heels on her boots clicking against the ground as she moved forward.
"Did– Did you see that?! I mean, look! Atton grabbed that enormous tree and pulled it out of the ground! And reading his vital signs, that required as much energy as it takes us to remove a needle from a ball of soft clay. And did you see how he killed that guy?! I mean, kudos for creativity, definitely. Everything's going out awesome!"
There was a childish and joyful tone in Thadeus' voice, and his excitement and anxiety was so out there that the old hag couldn't help but to stretch his wasted hand up into the air, palm wide open, and expect a high-five. The sparkle in his eyes was priceless, and his beam composed of perfectly arranged, white, fake teeth were good enough to make everyone's life much better. It was so innocent, in fact, that what Odette did was almost inhumane. She completely ignored Thadeus' motion and walked closer to the controls, leaning in and resting her elbows on the few parts that had no buttons to be pressed.
"And that's supposed to be good?" Odette teased with a grimace. "Listen, Thadeus, I don't think you understand the seriousness of this mission. We're talking about the relics that hold the world together. This needs to be done smoothly. I mean, not only did we have to dress him into the attire of the only material that could retain his powers; little lion has to do that kind of things to call attention. We can't sport that, Thad. I mean…"
"I…" Thadeus interrupted, discretely lowering his hand and clearing his throat. "I understand. You're right. But anyway, Atton is inside Cerulean, that's what matters. Did you give Atton the intel?"
"Yes." Odette responded. "I told him that—… Wait, Thadeus. Look..." Odette spoke, interrupting herself as she shifted her view from the main monitor to another smaller one. This one was very simple, and it displayed a colorful bar and an arrow. The three main colors were green, yellow, and red, and a blurred mixture of the two meeting colors was put at the border of each. It had no clear title, and there were many boxes with various codes. Thadeus and Odette, however, knew what it was. It was some sort of threat meter, which, somehow, detected the threats of the areas or people surrounding Atton. Green stood for most of the people, and it meant Atton was completely safe and he could kill everyone with the blink of an eye. Yellow meant someone whose powers could somehow or in some situation match Atton's. Red meant a cataclysmic nuclear winter that no creature could survive. The meter displayed being yellow, very slightly above the center.
Thadeus seemed just as impressed as Odette. This wasn't good. They didn't expect to reach a yellow meter so fast. Not even when Atton was close to the group of elemental warriors did it reach that critical point. It wasn't a good sign. It's not like Atton couldn't take on whatever waited for him, but the fact that something could reach yellow was alarming. "I don't know what that might be. I'll try to run a scan on the area. I mean, energy levels are high, but I didn't care to investigate if it stood a threat. It does, apparently. I'll try to get to the source of it. Have you informed Atton on the whereabouts of the relic?"
—"No."
—"Should I run a scan on that, too?"
—"Please."
—"Perfect."
—"Get me the microphone, and hook Atton up."
(…)
Atton fiercely looked around the insides of Cerulean. It was eerie. Every single being in there seemed hostile. Everyone gave him dirty looks and seemed to curse under their breath. Everyone seemed soulless. Beasts ready attack and fight until death. But they appeared to be holding it back. Against their will. In fact, they weren't that different from Atton. They weren't invincible, though. So that was cool. Atton proceeded to walk until he was right in the middle of Cerulean, in a small clearing. The male looked around, spinning on his own axis and letting his eyes examine the surrounding. He was confused. He didn't know what to do. I mean, he was told to destroy everything that got on his way. But… What was his way? He didn't know, but he was growing uneasy about it. The ambient was so sharp it could be cut with a knife. Not only that, but he could feel various presences coming closer with each second. The elemental warriors, maybe? A worthy antagonist? Atton was pulled out of his train of thought when Odette spoke.
—"Atton."
—"Yes ma'am."
—"So you're in Cerulean now. Perfect. But I'll let you know something. If you do something like that tree thing again when there's no need to do so, I will personally go there and annihilate you."
—"It won't happen again."
—"Like hell it won't. But that doesn't matter now. Look, Atton, I know I should inform you of where to look for this so-called weapon, but you have new orders. Stand your ground. Destroy anything that might put you in danger, but don't attack unless they do so first. I repeat, stand your ground. We're currently running scans and researching the area; for it seems to be perilous. I'll keep you informed."
—"Roger."
Feeling the connection with Odette being cut, Atton closed his hands into fists, cautiously preparing for anything to come. His own power had blinded him into believing he could fight anything and win. He wasn't far from the truth, but it would turn back on him eventually. Until then, he just had to spare Odette some time. Atton expected the worse.
