Crystal hack: Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.7

Should I add infinite Rare Candies or a Key Item that functions in the same way to skip grinding?

  • Yes, that would be great.

  • Yes, but the leveling system and the level curve is decent and it's not needed per se.

WOOO! One of the best hacks just got even better. Thanks man, we all appreciate your hard work! I also really like your idea of only using the first pokemon encounter in each route/town but without the nuzlocke death clause. That'll definitely make my runs more interesting.

I'll start a playthrough soon and I know I'm going to really enjoy it. Thanks again!!

Hey man as you added an option for grindless like candy, do you intend to add another QoL like 100% chance of capture or cheap MS on market? I just realized how SUPER INCREDIBLY FUN your hack got with candy on the market, but I feel like a new QoL like easy catch should add another layer of grindless to get pokémons easily while the main focus is just on the hard battles.

I don't just ask this as a personal request, but as my friends have started doing challenges and they missed an easy way to catch pokémons without spending too much time on trying to get them. And they feel it's not fair to use save states to capture while they do challenges on live stream.

I don't really plan on adding the Master Ball as a sellable item, to be honest.

As far as catching Pokemon is concerned I've fixed every type of Balls to work as intended and adding an infinite source of Master Balls would make that rather pointless and take away all the challenge there is in catching Pokemon.

It'd be one thing if it were just regular encounters the player was concerned with, but all the Legendary encounters, which have much better movesets when you fight them, would turn into one turn ball toss without any sort of difficulty.

Level grinding adds nothing to the overall difficulty, other than wasting time so Rare Candies are pretty justified in my opinion, but I wouldn't go as far with wild encounters.

Sorry if this was already asked, is there a way to grind money aside from relying on phone rematches?
There are 3 trainers in Kanto who you can battle infinitely (Agatha, Lorelei and Archer) before beating Red.

There aren't any trainers in the Johto section who you can fight over and over again, but smashing rocks with the Rock Smash TM gives you a chance of getting items like Max Revive, Fossils or Held Items which you can sell for money.

Those are the most consistent methods, I think, though Rock Smashing is tedious at times lol

@GetKosiorekt
Did you try beating your hack without using any held items such as berries? Do you think it's possible (without spoiling anything about certain bosses where I might get stuck)?
That's a challenge I'd like to do with no other restrictions except of course your mandatory "lunatic" hack rules lol

The best and most consistent held item in Gen 2 are the Leftovers and you're not going to get access to that until you beat Jasmine and get the Thief TM in the Mahogany Rocket Base. Other items like the Scope Lens, Focus Band or Quick Claw are just a RNG machine, Type damage boosting items like Mystic Water can help get certain damage ranges, while the Berries are mostly there to help you and not deal with status.

I don't think any of these items are obligatory to beat the hack, but a lot of bosses use status moves and hit hard in general, not to mention the damage boosts are much more important when you both and the AI have no stat experience. You should still be able to beat every boss with the right team composition for each fight but at that point you're just going to make all the bosses much more luck dependant than usual.

Thank you for answering!

One last question if you dont mind. The docs mention that Feraligatr is now part dark, but I noticed its stats didnt get changed per the docs. Is there a chance this can be looked at in the future since both Water and Dark are special types in Gen 2 and Feraligatr has a higher physical attack stat?

I had considered buffing Feraligatr's Special Attack stat, but in all the testing I've done I didn't feel it was needed.

Dark type gives it great utility as a switch in and it can reliably kill Psychic types with Crunch and/or Cut. In general with much better coverage (Bug type Cut, Rock Slide, Submission, Outrage) it's a useful mixed attacker and hits hard enough with Surf/Hydro Pump to deal with Rock, Ground and Fire Types and can use Ice Beam pretty well.

Understandable and thanks a ton for the super fast responses. I look forward to playing all of Lunatic Crystal after my current rom hack run on Pokemon Luminescent. Take care and good luck on your future work and projects!

What are the requirements to battle Morty? He mentions visiting the dance theater, but I already got Surf from it.
I am using Crystal version 1.1 and patch version 1.7 grindless

Also it may be worth checking the list of items that your mom buys you since it allows you to get two repels (or just eliminate the repel you get at the start): https://www.serebii.net/crystal/savings.shtml

You need to defeat Erika in the Dance Theater, you will be able to battle her after beating Silver in the Burned Tower, once you do Morty will be back in the Gym.

Hi. I just did the first gym and it wasn't as difficult as I'd hoped it would be. Is there any difficulty spike happening later on?

Type themed gyms are rather easy if you join with a team of Pokémon that have a type advantage over them. I believe Elite Four + Champion should prove a real challenge, right?

Bugsy is the easiest Gym Leader by far since he doesn't use Pokemon outside of his speciality and doesn't get fully optimal movepools.

Whitney is much harder than Bugsy and she'll be a sharp difficulty spike. All of the Gym Leaders from Whitney onwards will use Pokemon outside of their main types to try and counter the player.

Expect the Rivals to get difficult real quick as well, Team Rocket isn't a pushover either.

Lance is arguably the hardest fight in this hack from the feedback I've gotten and the other E4 members are no joke.

Loved Lunatic Crystal! An amazing balance of difficulty, modified storytelling, and improvements to the actual Pokémon.

Any chance you will pursue Lunatic Emerald? If so, I will absolutely look forward to it.

Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you've enjoyed my hack!

As for Lunatic Emerald, I'm not sure yet, I haven't given any thought as to what game my next ROM Hack would tackle next, but Hoenn is one of the options I am considering.
